Finally had some guy in the gym last night doing Oly lifts. I asked a few questions and practiced. I believe I could start doing push press, cleans, and maybe clean and jerk now.

What are the benefits of these lifts? Explosive power, or are they like super-compounds?

They work just about everything. They'll give you explosive power, absolute strength, and some quality muscle mass. Oly lifts are even a good form of cardio workout.

Oly Lifts for the win.

I'd be careful of jumping in too early, only as form may suffer.
I agree, Push Press is a good place to start as well as Cleans but to complete a whole Clean and Jerk is pretty complex and without correct coaching you may miss out on some important little things that end up affecting your form / chance of injury.

That being said if this other guy looked like he knew what he was doing, maybe you could arrange to go a few times when he does and have him give you some coaching?
