edit/update:

How it works: You pick the winners in all the regular season games of the NFL. No point spreads, no over/unders. Just who will win each game. The winners are those with the best aggregate records over the whole season.

Who's administering it? MrWebb

entry Deadline: August 31 to signup (you could sign up later but there's no point if you want in on the prizes)

Prizes (courtesy of At Large Nutrition)
1st - $150 worth of AtLarge products
2nd - $100 worth of AtLarge products
3rd - $50 worth of AtLarge products

We will pay the shipping in the continental US and you can choose from ANY of our products.

How to play: Reply to this thread with something like "I'm in" and MrWebb will PM you at the end of August with information for a cbssportsline or similar pick'em pool.

I plan to win this for the second year in a row

watch out!!!

this is always more appealing to me than the fantasy football stuff
Hopefully, MrWebb will do it again (I'm pretty sure he did it last year)

I'm in...but for some reason I always mess up on these. One week I'll get nearly all of them right, next week I get 2 right.

And I guess my homerism gets in the way some times as I pick the Cowboys to lose every week.

iight, works for me. last year i did a pool with my friends and it was fun as hell. there was a $10 buy in and one week i won like 80 bucks. it was awesome... but i'll do this one too for braggin rights. :)

MrWebb78

I was planning on starting another pool in a week or so. Maybe with any luck we can have it as a sticky since it is updated weekly throughout the season.

Last year KingWilder picked best, and I was awed that he whooped the ESPN "experts" with their picks.

But I would be glad to run it again this year and tally up the records. Hopefully we can have even more people this year, and nobody misses weeks like they did last year.

It's gonna happen, don't worry. I'll talk to the admin about maybe a couple cheap prizes.

I can either sticky it in gen chat as we get closer, or we can just keep it back here. It may make more sense to just keep it back here since it is officially a "contest".

If we make this into competition can we have like a winner kind of thing. Like, let say that we all pitch in and buy something and then winner gets a shirt of somethign from ALN? Or is that a no go?

KingWilder

I buy stuff from ALN all the time...a free t-shirt for the winner of this wouldn't be TOO much to ask for at all...at least IMO

Chris that's awesome that you guys would throw in prizes for this thing. I suspect with these prizes being added, we will have somewhere around 35 contestants by the start of the season.

I will ask these questions here first before PMing mods, and starting a seperate "official" thread.

1) since this will be a WBB contest with ALN prizes, should I start this thread in The Contest Forum or General Chat? Will it be a sticky since it will need weekly updates?

2) Last year we almost needed a tiebreaker. What is everyone's input on this? I think the tiebreaker should be between two choices, whoever had the best one week score, or we could start a "mini pool" when the playoffs start and let all involved pick playoff winners. I personally prefer the best weekly score to be the tie decider.

3)

Chris

Since there will be many people competing in this, do you think we should split it up somehow? Like maybe have divisions, or even two different contests? If there are 20-30 people it might get a little sloppy. If you guys are generous enough to offer more prizes I think this would be a better way of doing things. Just a little suggestion, but do whatever you think is best.

MrWebb78
08-12-2007, 09:23 PM
If this thing gets really big, as I think it will, maybe it would be best to register with a football pool website. Then everyone involved can just login to that and make picks and we won't have to worry about double checking edited picks, or people missing cutoff times, and this thread won't turn into a 35 page mess with everyones weekly picks and smack talk.

I'm looking into free sites right now, just haven't found one I'm overly impressed with yet. Let me know how this sounds to everyone, I still have no problem counting wins/losses every week, but as mentioned earlier it could get very sloppy, and I would hate to error with awesome prizes involved.

I agree using a website might make the most sense if this thing continues to grow and turn into a monster. I was involved with one on cbssportsline.com last year. I thought it was pretty user friendly. It essentially does all the work for you. You just have to make sure you remember to get your picks in before kickoff of that 1st round of games on sunday or you're screwed.

yankeekd25
08-13-2007, 10:49 AM
Cbssportsline.com is good, and yahoo.com is good too. Yahoo holds up to 50 people in one group. You just have to make a private group and get everyone to sign up.

How about we set joining the pool(the master list) to a deadline of August 31st. Then that will give me til Sep 6th to give all participants the league info/passwords/other info so they can join and make picks.

I will make a league in either yahoo or cbssportsline, depending on the number of participants, and then PM everyone the league info immediately afterwards to make sure everyone gets on board.

I'd be game to do it again, and I can't say for %100 sure right now but I'd more then likely be able to contribute a small amount for the prizes. I have to see how my college expenses work out.

No. Right now I am just waiting one more week to allow everyone whop wants to play to say so. Then on Sept. 1st everyone will get a PM from me telling you where to go to register to play. It will probably be on cbssportsline.com, maybe yahoo, depending on how many people want to play.

Then every week you will just login to that site and make your picks.

I have PM'd everyone on the list!

I apologize for sending two PMs to everyone, but my first one didn't include the link. http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/pickem

If you have NOT received a PM for some reason, get a hold of me ASAP so I can send you the info to sign up and make picks.

Yahoo seems pretty simple as far as make picks and it counts em. No Point spreads, No confidence pioints, just simple right and wrong picks. Deadline is 5 minutes before the start of each week.

Good luck all.

you should only be able to see your own. When you select group picks, you can tell who has submitted picks, and who hasn't, but not WHO they selected. That shouldn't pop up until game day.

yeah and that decision is kicking me in the balls right now

Indy is a beast of a team at home, in the dome, especially with crowd charged up from the super bowl victory. Peyton picked apart the secondary, and Addai picked apart the front 7. Also, if the Colts keep this up with their defense, they are the best team in football.

But Wilder I noticed you and a bunch of ppl took ARI over SF Monday night. That was one of the games I was going back and forth on. I wanted to pick ARI but the name Frank Gore was ringing in my head. That game, the Packer game ('cuz I'm a homer), and the BAL/CIN game is gonna come back and hurt me.

wow, indi looked great- if that defense compliments their terrific offense all season they could yet again be a threat to the dolphins perfect season.

The dolphins could have had Drew Brees! we could have built our franchise around this gentleman, he looks much faster and AGILE this year too. New Orleans will go far in the NFC.

Webb with the lone pick of TB over SEA. WHAT DO YOU KNOW THAT WE DON'T?!?!? :):):):)

You know it. I'd have picked the packers over the eagles if the packers had anything that even resembled a college level running game... but without that the load will put be on favre's shoulders and unless they start out by putting up points it could get ugly.

I think the SF ARI game will be really close, but I think SF will win it by 3.

HOW can you bet against the colts LMAO, unless its a playoff game the colts are an automatic choice. Even if they do lose 2-3 times you still got 13-14 W's off of them... an even trade off in my book.

WBBIRL
09-09-2007, 06:49 PM
I messed up 3 picks so far, but I at least feel as though philly should have won that game aginst GB.

I did get to see it all (in very sexy HD I might add) and it was a good game to watch. Green Bays Offense sucked big ones, I saw a lot of mistakes comming from people on the packers team that you don't expect mistakes out of. Pass Interference on Donald Driver and Illegal Contact on Woodson... those types of players usually don't make stupid mistakes.

Greenbays defense REALLY stepped it up when called upon, Al Harris is a trooper for playing (especially as well as he did) after the injury. Greenbays FG kicker is a stud. GB's running game sucks as well.

If the packers could get something together on offense then they have a shot at making the playoffs. But unless there is improvement, mainly from the offense and GB's secondary, any playoff appearance will be short lived.

The eagles shot themselves in the foot as far as special teams are concerned. They played well on offense for how well GB's defense did at times, and play consistently on defense.

The pack never should have been in that game, they only scored 9 offensive points and even some of those were due to special teams mistakes on the eagles part.

DET @ OAK

I TOTALLY forgot that oakland doesn't have randy moss anymore... thats a big DING FRIES READY on my part.

HOU @ KC

I really expect KC to get a good enough ground game going to pull a win out... this was probably my poorest pick so far. I didn't really research this one much. I probably won't go with KC too much more in the future after seeing how badly they struggled on offense.

I still have to pick NE in that game. They just looked deadly against the Jets. San Diego didn't look like anything that special vs. the Bears. I know the Bears D is great, but still, they were getting shut out till the last 9 minutes of the game.

Didn't realize NE had randy moss, he seems to be playing again now that he's "happy" with who's around him. When Randys not being a childish baby, he's one of the most dangerous WR's with his size and speed.

L.T. pulled the load against the bears and he could do it again against the Patriots but overall I think the Patriots are better, more balanced team. They will play good defense, but they will really test the bolts D much harder then the bears did.

Talking_God
09-12-2007, 03:22 PM

To me the toughest games are Min/ Det and obviously SD/ NE. I keep going back and forth on these two.

Minnesota and New England. No more troubles!

Why Minnesota? Their Defense? I think the Lions offense will be able to do damage vs Minnesota. They have to many playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. The Vikes won't be able to shut them all down.

As for the NE game, NE seems to be the consensus pick. I'll prolly go with them.

The Rams/ 9ers game should also be a great one. Still deciding on that one as I think about it some more. Rams looked horrible on both sides of the ball vs the Panthers and lost their best O-lineman in Orlando Pace. 49er's defense looked great vs the Cardinals, but the offense struggled a little. Rams defense is anything but solid... Rams are at home looking for their first win, but SF has played the Rams well in the past few matchups. Bulger and SJax had terrible games but will they get any better with the loss of Pace? Too many questions.... Opinions?

SD will tear apart NE. There is too much BS about the spying interfering with the Pats, as well as their players(or player) being suspended for HGH. Those damn cheating Pats.

I'm a big time packers fan myself, to think the packers will beat the bolts is a very poor idea at best.

The packers stand no chance unless Greg Jennings plays and both he and driver have huge days and that defense plays like it did in week 1.

Yea... I know... I'm just throwing some optimism out there... LT does not look like the LT we all are used to because he's been facing some great defenses with great D-lines and the Packers D-Line is stellar. All you really have to do beat the Chargers is slow LT and Gates, (not easy, but do-able) and score about 20 pts. Hopefully Jennings does play because the Chargers' secondary is definitely beatable. If Brady and Moss can connect, Favre and Driver/ Jennings/ Jones can as well. Chances are I will pick the Chargers to win in the pool, but these Packers look like they are for real, and the Chargers look very bad. Even against the Bears last week, it took them a while to get the offense going. Defense is the key. You never know what will happen on any given Sunday big boiii.

Edit: Just looking ahead at next weeks games... Really not more then one game is a lock.... will be some tough decisions... one of the hardest weeks I've seen in a while...

Regression to the mean. Get comfortable with the concept, because it's what you'll be doing. :p

Week 3 will be the true test of who knows how to pick (or get lucky). Very tough games on the slate this week.

Thanks man! Week 3 is gonna separate the men from the boys. If teams like the Browns can beat the Bengals and the Bucs can beat the Saints, who the hell knows what's gonna happen in week 3. Many of the games could go either way.

If GB loses this game aginst SD, its their own stupid faults.

How do you get on the 1 yard line with 1st and goal to go and wind up getting NO points out of that without a fumble or interception. Its middle of the 4th qtr and your down by 4 and you turn it over on downs. RE ****EN DICILOUS

I made a ballsy call taking DET. I knew in my mind that the Eagles were not going 0-3, losing at home to the Lions. Lions beat some crappy teams and their 2-0 start was deceitful. I am truly an idiot for taking Det. I had Philly chosen for the whole week, but something in my head told me to switch it.

It's you and me this week, big guy. We'll see how it goes. Not that it matters on a week-by-week basis, and I'm probably pulling for Dallas tonight for other reasons.

Dallas has a big lead, am I going on blind faith with picking the Titans. I don't know for sure, but i was damned impressed with their efforts against the colts last week.

I picked Dallas because I think they would win lol, lets see how it winds out. Not a bad week for IRL.

I might have a say in who takes this week. If NO manages to win, then there will be a 3 way tie with IRL, me, and Relentless. GEAUX SAINTS!

I had trouble as well on Sunday. This was going to be my "get away from the rest of the pack" weekend but my plans failed. :D

I can't believe KC scored 13 points! That's a lot for them!
Those darn Raiders blocked Dawson's kick!
I can't believe the Giants came back - on the road?
Rex Grossman is terrible. (I should have known that.)
The Broncos losing to Jacksonville in Denver? Ugh!
And San Diego? Who even knows...

The packers defense played one hell of a game, it was no mistake. The packers SHOULD have won the game by 7 points more then they did. You can't call them holding LT back like they did luck. The packers have impressed the living hell out of me, they are a playoff caliber team. Not that it matters, because I think this is another AFC superbowl year again.

Oh man. This week was terrible for me. It seems that every game I got wrong was a really close game, too. A few different plays here and there and I could have done MUCH better. :p

Relentless

Aside from one boner where I should have known better (Detroit) all my incorrect picks were losers by 3 points or less.

I am wondering if a worthwhile metric in this sort of thing is measuring the # of points by which you were wrong over the course of the season (i.e. if it's a blowout loss for a team you picked to win, you are saddled with a herd of points and the goal is to minimize the points)

WBBIRL
09-24-2007, 05:19 PM
A loss is a loss is how I look at it.

Some of these games shouldn't have been that close, and when games are close the winners grin and the losers grit there teeth.

Its on tonight, if the titans win I stand alone at the top of this week... which means nothing =/

1.KC doesn't lose at home. It was close but they pulled it out.

2.I picked Cleveland all week then changed it. It was the raiders time to win.

3.I didn't expect this either.

4.Wrex Grossman showed up last night.

5.I was at the game, the Broncos played like crap. Jacksonville's D is tougher than most think. They killed the run game. Put too much pressure on Jay.

6.They lost three coaches last year. The players need some coaching.

I didn't do to bad this week. Just being consitant.

There is NO reason to be hating on green bay. SD didn't lose because their coaches weren't as good as Green Bays. The packers played better and they won, the chargers on paper had more talent.

Shutting LT down was a big factor in this game, and a coach doesn't prevent LT from getting man handled on the field.

Yeah - the Packers are playing solid this year. I don't disagree with you there IRL. I just think that everyone is shocked by how the Chargers are playing. LT 2.7 yards per carry in three games? No one predicted that.

Speaking of teams not living up to expectations - the New Orleans Saints. Geez... Where do I start?
