View Full Version : HB: Box Squat -Near Max Attempt

Here was the run up:

Box Squats:
warm up sets
520x1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJm3XCE2xsE

Now, the most common comment I get is that I rock on the box too much.

What do you all think? and any other things you notice I'm screwing up?

I know it takes forever for me to get around to it but I eventually do. lol

Any way you can cut the vid a little shorter next time :p. Really strong HB. Must be kinda annoying not being able to go heavier because of the rack. How strong is that box? If you go any heavier it's gonna smash to bits ;) ahhaha. Nice work

08-16-2007, 09:26 PM
HB- In my humble and female opinion I didn't think the rocking was excessive. I don't think you rock more than Guido or Red Fury when they do box squats. That 520 looked pretty easy. Next time put some weight on the bar.

08-16-2007, 09:46 PM
Oh you rock alright

08-16-2007, 09:49 PM
I'd be on the side that says you rocked too much. Touch and go, imo.

Damn heavy weight though man, nicely done.

why are u looking side to side as if you just committed a murder and you're afraid the feds are after you? awesome lift.

08-16-2007, 10:05 PM
Are those jeans you're wearing??? :D Awesome lift HB!!!

08-16-2007, 11:11 PM
supurb lift HB, far from max, you have 550 in you.

08-16-2007, 11:23 PM
That's exactly how I've always thought a box squat should look like. I was told that you're activating your hamstrings more on the way back up by rocking back like that. I really don't see the point in a touch and go box squat. Why even have the box there in the first place? Nice work man. Only you could get away with squatting in tight jeans like that haha.

Very strong man.

I would prefer to sit back more and rock less, but typically when getting close to a max it becomes more difficult and the body tends to sit down a bit more than back. Very strong, plenty more in you. You need some big bastards spotting you so you can put 600+ on there!

08-17-2007, 01:35 AM
Hahahhaa, wow, I can't stop laughing. You keep looking behind you like the feds are comin after ya! And you gotta get in one last squat before they get you!

08-17-2007, 05:23 AM
wow! strong as ever HB

08-17-2007, 07:53 AM
christ that looked easy

Awesome job HB...

Although I would not disagree with Chris, it does seem like your hips are back quite a lot without the exagerated sitting back motion.. I think that is your technique and it seems to be consistant with your other box squatting vids.. your rock wasn't bad, you could see how you released the muscle contraction.

lol on the jeans... if I did that, mine would split from top 2 bottom.. but I know why you wear them.. to hide those pencils you walk on.. hahaha.. pretty freakin' strong pencils though!!

And yeah.. I agree with the guys above.. you have at least another 40-80 lbs in ya.. that was too easy!!

08-17-2007, 09:06 AM
Awesome HB. You could have repped that weight or thrown on another 50 lbs. LOL @ you looking around. How you did that squat with jeans and an ipod in your pocket is beyond me. Again though, impressive work.

08-17-2007, 10:14 AM
Jesus Christ! :D

08-17-2007, 10:50 AM
Yeah, I was wondering about the jeans, too. Do you always squat in jeans?

I would have no jeans left if I did that.

08-17-2007, 03:42 PM
haha, yeah well, I did look like I was kicked up on something. I guess I need to lay off the caffeine. idk wtf was wrong with me. lol

About the jeans... You guys never squat in jeans? C'mon man, call them a poor man's lifting suit. lol

and yeah, that wa by no means not a total max attempt. I have a good 550 in me if not a little more.

-Thanks man.

With all due respect, I appreciate the comment but touch and go would not be what you look to do on box squats.

Awsome lift HB.

I couldn't help but laugh though at the beginning. I think you grabbed some crack instead of caffeine that morning.

There we have it folks, from his own mouth - HeavyBomber's magic cutting formula: box squats and crack.

Babe, you make 'em look easy. ;)

Good lift!

Great lift HB. You looked like you could do at least one more. I thought that you were supposed to minimize rocking on a box squat - I thought box squats were intended to improve form, and activate the hamstrings. I'll admit that I don't know much about the subject, and I box squat roughly 1/3 what you do, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I kept thinking you were going to try to sell crack to the camera, LOL!

08-17-2007, 08:48 PM
LOL bjohnso

You need some one killed? loololol <crazy laugh>

Fooking boxsquats man, gotta get mental!

Noooo dude, don't belittle yourself, your opinion is as good as anybody's including my stupid a$$.
I did rock too much. That's the value of the camera, you can see it. Thanks man, I'm going to try to correct it.

The point I was trying to make is that I don't know a whole lot about box squatting. All I know is basically what I've heard Sensei (I think it was Sensei) tell others as well as myself - that the purpose of the box squat is too learn form for a regular squat, and that you shouldn't sit back on the box. You should sit down but keep your core tight (which I'm sure you're doing), but I'm fairly new to this so obviously I know hardly anything. By the looks of it I wouldn't doubt that you could do that without rocking.

Now that you mention it, I should take my camera to the gym to see if my form is as good as I hope it is. Management makes you notify them a week in advance if you you want to take a camera in, which is the gheyest thing I have ever heard. It's not even worth the effort at this point. I don't know why they make you do that, but I've been wanting to take some video of myself for a form check....and maybe a little ego boost ;)

Awesome wt and video

08-20-2007, 06:12 PM
You made that look frighteningly easy. Amazing!

08-20-2007, 07:58 PM
With all due respect, I appreciate the comment but touch and go would not be what you look to do on box squats.

does a slight sit/pause activate the hammys more?

08-24-2007, 07:04 AM

I just have to ask though; why did you put glasses on?

08-24-2007, 08:10 AM
I didn't think the rock was excessive, maybe a tad more than needed but nothing crazy. The one thing I would point out is that it looks like your knees come in a little bit (could be the camera angle) and then push forward over your feet/toes. Push your knees out more and I think that would give you better hip strength and minimize the rocking on the box, which again, wasn't that bad.

08-24-2007, 01:59 PM
Great lift man.
