I am supplimenting Lysine (3 grams a day) for help with a recent outbreak of shingles (No idea why I have this stupid thing, the doctor said it was just bad luck). Anyway, are there any other benefits from taking this? Any reason not to take it?
Thanks.

No and no. It's great for cold sores as well.

Haha thanks, that's what i figured. Just making sure. And incase anyone searches shingles in the future, or lysine, I'll let you know that I am recovering much faster than the doctor said. So it seems to be doing something.

My brother had shingles a few years ago. They were awful. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Shingles suck. I've had a couple outbreaks over the years. Very painful.

I was never given Lysine - just an oral steroidal anti-inflammatory. prednisone.

They actually have a shingles vaccine now, but its only approved for use in old people.

Yeah it was a pretty discouraging diagnosis for someone who considers themselves in good shape. I would love to know what set it off. And I read about the lysine online somewhere, and I figured it wouldn't hurt to try. I also have an antiviral precscription. Anyway, thanks for the support guys. I am planning on posting a journal and all that soon, once i get things on track.

I'll second the lysine thing for cold sores. I've seen many, many people using it for that, so I'm guessing it does something there.

for cold sores, it's the arginine/lysine ratio that's supposed to alter the biochemistry of the virus. Something about it being very arginine dependant.
So if you're taking No-Xplod or other NO supplements and you get cold-sores, consider that the supplent is basically just arginine (and caffeine).

as far as lysine, you probably get plenty in your protein powder.

I'm unsure how much lysine is in protein powder (whether or not it's enough to qualify as the 'therapeutic level' for cold sores). I do recall hearing that arginine products will exacerbate cold sores though.

Seriously... I have been taking one for about a month now (I got two months supply free from a company rep as a tip at work). If this is true it might explain why I have this. I know shingles isn't the exact same virus as the cold sure, but its close enough. I wonder...

I just did a google search on it. I think we have a winner! Thanks alot, that one little line just answered a whole lot of questions. Now back to the road to recovery.

are you taking it orally?
Try applying it topically. Maybe add it to medication you already apply.
