Don't have any protein powder? Don't wanna spend hundreds of dollars on weight gainers? No worries.

This is my shake recipe. It helped me gain 15+ lbs in one month.

2,500 calories / 100g of protein

1 cup peanut butter
3.5 cups milk
1 cup vanilla ice cream
2 tbsp olive oil

There you have it. A day's worth of calories in one shake.

Comes out to about 40 ounces.

It's not that bad. A cup of peanut butter scares a lot of people. If you wanna be a wuss about it, try 1/2 a cup.

It's about as thick as a McDonalds milk shake.

Don't try drinking it all at once. You'll probably die.

That's a beastly shake but a 1 cup of natty PB costs A LOT more than weight gainer or protein powder.

PB and milk are some of my most expensive food purchases, and I get those at costco.

I enjoy PB far too much to liquify it, I gotta taste every bite. But some people seem to love it. I will not have a "shake" unless it's oreo based, lol.

What constitutes too much fat? Are you basing that statement off of percentages, a total number per day? Adam, your shake is actually pretty similar (if you 2.5 X's it as balko).

Personally I think they both look horrible and I would rather get more protein and carbs per 1000 calories, but it's not that it's going to make much of a difference as long as calories are the same.

the only thing i changed was i only used half a cup of ice cream and added a scoop of whey. approx. same cals just more protein and less bad fat, only 2.5g but still, its an extra 30g of protein so i think thats a pretty good trade. you could literally put any flavour of protein in it and not notice that its there, theres just so much peanut butter lol.

berfles
10-09-2007, 09:13 PM
What the hell, I put that and more in my shake and it came to like 1500 :( Granted I only use 2 cups of milk and already go through a half gallon every other day, but I also put protein power in, carbo gain, and a cup of oats (which ruins it because they clump at the bottom even if ground up). I also put a cup of ice cream in.

Maybe I'll try bumping up the amount of milk or something, but I still don't see how this is 2500 calories. Must be the olive oil.

Bako Lifter
10-09-2007, 10:21 PM

An alternative is to load up that sucker with olive oil and flax oil for the extra calories. I'm not a huge fan of the peanut butter taste either. I'm gonna try chocolate milk tomorrow.

Bako Lifter

Just made that Bako shake with just a little less than one cup of peanut butter (just to give it a shot for the first time cause thats a lot of peanut butter). It doesn't taste that bad actually, and when I finally finish this glass I'll see if I'm up to making another one later tonight but with a full cup.

One of these days I'm going to sit down and recalculate what I put in and maybe start adding another cup of milk and another 1/2 cup of peanut butter. I remember a few years back when I made something similar to what I make now only it was just 840 calories, and I thought that was a ton.

I used to put it in the fridge so it would firm up, or sometimes even the freezer. I hated spooning it out, even though it only took a few minutes it felt like 10. I just started stirring the oil into it and letting it sit out so it would stay runny and then pouring it in the blender.

Yep, I started doing that too, but the peanut butter was still a bitch to get off the spoon and the POS dishwasher doesn't do it unless I get it off there first. That's why I thought the non-stick stuff was a good idea, but I don't need it now.

What's the olive oil for?

Keith
04-11-2009, 08:09 AM
It will probably turn out nasty.

Olive oil is for healthy fats and simple way to increase calories. They vary with different brands, but the one I have, 1 table spoon = 120 calories. With the amount of PB in this shake, you could have 4 table spoons of olive oil in it and not even taste it. 480 extra calories without even knowing FTW!

Cheers.

ps - Any shake with less than 1/2 cup of peanut butter is not a "Bako Shake". It's just a wannabe shake.

So technically its a smaller bako shake, but i cant fit any more liquid into the magic bullet. It's damn thick, but it puts the weight on.

2 cups milk
1 cup vanilla ice cream

With a gain of 25 lbs in about 2 1/2 months with his experience, I'd be very surprised if 1/4 of that weight is muscle. I'm sure he didn't expect it to be all muscle and just wanted to put on overall weight to become stronger.

4 tbsp natty omega 3s pb- (i used heaping tbsps so it might be even more than 4 lol
2 scoops whey
1/2cup-1 cup of icecream not really sure on this one i suck at measuring the ice cream
32 oz whole milk

cALORIES-1460...yeah buddy!
carbs-88....thats kind of fail
protein-96 this is a great amount of protein considering the gainer is only 1460 calories! very lean shake
fat-88 grams (ill be honest at first ididnt even count the fat, but then i felt so bad counting only carbs, calories and protein, and after loling a bit i counted the fat. i guess 88 grams is ok?

the pb makes the shake taste great. and ilove the lack of oats ;)

well in that case i will start using 8 tbsp (seriol) i have a very stupid question though. please dont laugh lol. is a tbsp of pb like a heaping tbs or just enough where the pb fills out the whole spoon without overflowing ontop of the spoon. i dont know if im making sense and i know it sa stupid answer but i think ive been using like 3tbsp servings for my 1 tbsp servings mans.

like this is what my tablespoons looks like notice how its a heaping tbsp. its overflowing over the sppon instead of just filling the spoon out on the insides.

I wish magic bullets had bigger cups.

To the guy above me. Just get a measuring cup, fill it up to 1 cup, and count how many spoonfulls it took.

alright however im gonna start with a half cup. i am very stupid with measuring things im not gonna lie. even pb is hard for me to measure in a measuring cup because its not a liquid and so it wont be exact for me but w/e.

That's why I use a thunderstick imitation and use a large plastic cup (you've seen it I think). So easy, so quick, and the clean up is a breeze! **** I should do a commercial for it.

Who cares. But to answer your question, a tablespoon is the ingredients leveled off at the top. A heaping tablespoon is just that. My heaping tablespoons are about 3 regular tablespoons.

Your blender has numbers on it. Fill it up with milk, then dump in the pb until the milk rises to the next 1/2 cup line.

And I don't think an actual spoon has anything to do with the unit of measurement.

Oats are disgusting. I used them in mine for awhile and no matter what I did they ended up in a lump at the bottom.
I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. Put the oats in a coffee grinder until it's powder... then put the powder in the blender with the rest of the shake. The end.

They were powder after I put them in my Magic Bullet and turn it on for a minute. It still lumped at the bottom.

I don't know what you're doing wrong, but it never does that for me. It took me a while to find the right way to mix the ingredients to get the right consistency.

why not just eat a bowl of bran flakes with the shake instead of grinding up oats into a smoothie? LMAO.

Because that just adds one more thing to physically eat, and that's what I'm trying to get away from with the shake.

No matter, I still won't put oats in and I'm doing fine.

yeah I agree with you the oats in shake is a dumb idea. They just clump at bottom then you have to slug down wads of oats. Plus raw oats tend to give me ungodly sulphur smelling gas.

But I don't know, my maintenance must be much lower than yours, right now I'm bulking around 3k a little over maybe (I dont precisely track it). I'm fine. I like eating a bowl of cereal in morning with a shake and a bowl of cereal at night with a shake. Dunno maybe it reminds me of the old days when I was a little kid eating cereal at nighttime for a snack :)

You gotta pound it back right after you mix it, or **** gets ****ed.

I generally drink it within a half hour, unless I'm actually hungry (which is maybe once a month) then it's faster. Even at a half an hour I toe the line of puking.

1. The bako shake does not have oats in it.
2. It is already 2,500 calories. Why are you people putting more in it.

+5 to Bako for the recipe!!!
Anyways, I read so many posts concerned about fat. Its true 279% Saturated Fat Daily Allowance is what you are eating daily with this shake. Almost 3 times as much fat allowed for all meals in a single shake.

Honestly, most of us could care less about the macros. All I know, is i'm stronger than i've ever been, and bigger than i've ever been. It packs weight on really hard, (you gotta be training hard if you want minimal fat gains), and thats what most of us are looking for.

Drinking it right now at work!

It really is thick and so damn sickly. I used chocolate ice cream instead and I used about 350ml (1.4 cups) of smooth peanut butter.
Must be over 3000 calories.

Wow, I feel like an idiot because I've never thought of doing that. lol. I always have different measuring spoons and stuff when it's a lot easier to just do what you do Bako. Do you measure the ice cream like that too? I've been putting the ice cream in a measuring cup to get 1 cup, then I have to scoop it out into the blender. Your way would definitely cut back on stuff I have to wash. :)

Yeah it gets easier after 2 weeks, then after 6 months of having 1 every day, it gets hard again. You just gotta hold your breath, and take it back.

i'm gonna try it tonight after my workout. it sounds delicious but i'll have to see.

edit: that was definitely amazing; hopefully it doesn't become gross after awhile like everyone else says. i think once it does start getting a little harder to swallow, ill throw in some bananas or something.

edit 2: with a banana in there it's perfect.

wow i love the bako shake!! I've gained 2-3 lbs and its only day 5 on the bako shake (I'm skinny as ****). I add 2 scoops of strawberry whey to the bako shake for a little bit extra calories. Now i gotta go down a bako shake and hit up 24 hour fitness :)

This is the first time reading this. Its actually kinda funny because my shakes are 3/4 cup peanut butter, 2 scoops protein, milk and honey. I love them but I have been trying to cut so I have had to lay off them awhile. I'm 260+ and only 5'10 lol. Great read and good recipe.

What do you mean by harm?

Real peanut butter (aka natty or natural) is about the only peanut butter anyone on this site uses, Skippy and that other junk are just peanut flavored hydrogenated oils with not as much protein, and are not exactly ideal for someone looking to put on lean mass.

Peanut butter isn't really expensive either, its like $3-$5 per jar, and if you get the really big jars at Cost-co or Sam's club you can save more money. I saw 35lbs online for ~$100 and strongly considering buying it.
