Hi. Does anyone here live in Atlanta? Could you tell me about it?
Thanks!

Live outside of downtown.
There's a reason the metro population is something like 6 million, but the actual city of Atlanta population is less than half-a-million.

Can you explain?
And, umm, I'm not racist, but unlike some of the very fearless black folks that live pretty much by themselves with a bunch of white folks, I pretty much have to have white people. Are there any good bar/nightlife spots downtown for "young" white people?

I'm no Atlanta expert...I've been there a few times. It's a nice city, if you don't live downtown, and don't plan on being downtown after dark unless you know where you're going and have a machine gun. Property is reasonable, the interstates are wonderfully well-maintained and labeled (if you can figure out all the "peachtree" differences), and there's lots to do. The high-end club (and living) scene (I haven't been there, but as far as I know it's where all the cool people live {right..I'm not cool} is Buckhead.
New York, NY - widely regarded as one of the safest cities in the US, is just above national average in violent crime.

Atlanta, GA - is triple the national average in violent crime.

Wilmington, NC - has a slightly higher crime rate than NYC!

Huntington, WV (where I live) is right at the national average (if I've interpreted the site correctly). The data is a few years old. Huntington has spiraled into a heroin and crack mecca since then.

St. Louis, MO - has won awards (along with Atlanta and Baltimore) for the nation's highest per-capita murder rate! They clock in at about triple the national average, but it looks like they're cracking down on rapes lately. Whew! I was worried about that for my visit!

And speaking of Baltimore, MD (reigning murder capital of the US, last I read, clocking in with almost 6 times the national average in murders!), they come in with the standard for high-crime cities, at about triple the overall violent crime rate. I personally (and affectionately) like to refer to Baltimore as "The Panhandling Capital of America." Baltimore is another BIG metro and smaller downtown.

And, finally, for Josh...Sacramento (if I remember correctly), CA.

A shout-out to your Russian friends for all their hard work. Look at that car theft rate! Holy crap!
I love the crime index sites..lol

Haha
The crime rate doesn't concern me all that much. I lived in DC over the summer and thought it was wayyy overhyped how bad crime was. If you just don't get involved with drug trade, stay in groups at night, stay away from bad areas, etc, your risk is pretty minimal, especially if you're a bigger guy.
Thanks for the info, though
