View Full Version : Am I taking "warming up" too far?

Ok, so I've read that workouts should be short and intense, lasting no longer than one hour, 1.5 hours MAX. The thing is, mine seem to be lasting approx. 1.5 - 2 hours long, I think it may have to do with my warm-ups. I'm currently on the WBB routine.

For example on bench I do,
Bar 15x1
135 8x1
155 5x1
165 5x1
175 5x1
185 5x1
195 6x2
135 --> fail

I'm probably resting anywhere from 15-30 sec between each warm-up set, and approx 2 min between each non-warmup set.
I'm doing pretty much the same thing with my other lifts;

Military press:
bar 15x1
65 8x1
75 5x1
85 5x1
95 5x2
105 6x2
65 --> fail

So should I cut some of this out to reduce my overall time in the gym?
Thanks

yeah you could cut some of the lighter sets out, and do more at the heavier weights say at the 195 range

do 135, 155, 185 then 3-4 sets of the 195, you lift more weight and get better results

warming up is just that warming up, get the blood going, dont tire urself out

Why are you going to failure on the last set?

not sure if you have what you posted set up as setsxreps or repsxsets

After reading Starting Strength I found a work out regimen that seems to work very well

barx10
then try and break up the sets as evenly as possible (by 10lbs or 15lbs for example) up to what will be your working set using 5-5-3-2

for example
barx10
135x5
155x5
185x3
205x2
215x5x5

To fully exhaust the muscles.

You don't always and shouldn't always go to failure on your sets. Going to failure is a tool, but it shouldn't be used every single time you hit the weights.

I don't think it looks like too much at all, it looks similar to what I do. My workouts usually last about 1.5 hours (too long, I think), but I usually wait a lot longer than 2 minutes between both warmups and working sets. Is that an entire workout you listed there?

yeah you should cut out some of the litter sets.

A warm up is just enough to get you in lifting mode. One light set or jumping rope is all you need to warm up anymore then that and well your workout has already started.

No just examples. I'm doing WBB1, and do something similar to the above for each exercise.

I only do warm up sets for the first lift of a body part. I do several because it takes me several sets to warm up especially if I'm going heavy.
