Dammit! I see that someone just beat me to this idea with the "alcohols effects on testosterone" thread, but I don't care. My question is slightly different.

What are you powerlifter's thoughts on beer. I know that it slows down the fat burning process (which is a plus for pl's), and I know that it has muscle degenerative effects, blah, blah, blah..... I know all the bad stuff about it. Obviously bodybuilders try to avoid alcohol because of all those reasons, but then again bodybuilders also avoid eating fast food.

Personally, I love beer, and I love lifting. So instead of compromising one for the other, I'll just have both. I was just wondering if powerlifters avoid drinking because it affects strength gains or something like that...

Drink in moderation. Problem solved.

I rarely get drunk anymore, but a beer every now and then will not hurt you at all.

PLers don't want to slow down fat metabolism. That makes no sense at all. Why would anybody want that? Alcohol has no benefit for the athlete besides stress relief. A beer or 2 won't kill you, but it won't help you, physically, either.

I thought you guys do everything possible to gain weight. Beer makes you gain weight alone, and it increases your appetite to help you eat more. A slow metabolism also helps you gain weight easier. I was just wondering.

I do drink in moderation. I just thought maybe you guys took advantage of the caloric denseness (is that a word) of beer. Where a bodybuilder will stay away from mickey d's, a powerlifter loves that s***. I thought the same may go for beer.

I know alcohol has no positives to it other then the fact that it's fun as hell to get drunk.

There's usually more calories in a soda than in a beer. You have a very misconstrued idea of powerlifters.

You're right I do have no idea what pling is all about. I did think that eating anything and everything to gain weight was one aspect of it.

Can you please just tell me that beer will make me stronger, that's really the answer I'm looking for.

"beer will make me stronger"

That statement would be false, so no one here should be telling you it will.

You're going to drink beer anyway. Why do you need anyone to tell you it's ok? If you like beer, drink it. But don't think it's going to make you a better lifter. I like beer. I drink beer.
