I was diagnosed with an abdominal strain several months ago. I took a couple weeks off and all was well. A couple months later I started playing hockey and it was back with a vengance so I took 2 weeks off from hockey and avoided any movements that aggrevated it. Last night was my first night playing after the time off and I was in pain by then end of the first period. After doing some googling around, it seems the symptoms of a sports hernia match - and they're often misdiagnosed as an abdominal strain.
So on that note, does anyone have any experience with sports hernias?
FYI I'm going to a doc on Monday.

since no one is replying, ill share what little information i know have. my friend has had 2, and both his surgerys went very well. he lifts weights every now and then, but i dont think he even DL's. genetically, some people are more prone to others. even if it is a hernia, you shouldnt be out of comission for too long.

It's been reconfirmed as a strained abdominal. I was referred to a physiotherapist, but I haven't gone yet. It's really tricky - it only hurts after playing hockey and I'm leterally pain free after a couple of days. I can do weighted situps without pain.

What kind of hernia did he have? The term "sports hernia" is actually incorrect because there is no protrusion of anything. From what I gather, it's named after the procedure used to remedy them, which is very similar to that of a trasition hernia.

Now I kind of wish I didn't read this. I was just going to post about something similar when I saw this topic.
I noticed Tuesday when I tried to DL that my lower right back and lower right abdomen region hurt. I stopped doing the DLs and just did some sets of pull-ups instead, but now my ab region still hurts if I kind of lower myself down with mostly my right leg, or certain ways I lean forward. It's kind of hard to explain, and the pain doesn't even register a 1 on the scale, it's just more of a discomfort.
It doesn't hurt when I do anything other than using mostly my right leg to lower myself down, or do a sort of lunge. I could even squat last night without pain.
Could it just be a strain or does that sound like a sports hernia? Now I'm slightly paranoid, and it's not good because I work part time and don't have insurance right now.

Have to see a doc to find out. If you think it's strain (it probably is...sports hernias are rare) then take it easy and ice it. Make sure to warmup well before lifting.
If the pain gets worse, especially while you're not lifting, see a doctor because severe pain in the lower right abdomen is a classic sign of apendicitis.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it. It's not getting any worse, it just doesn't really feel like it's getting any better either.
