Next meet is the APF meet in Alabama on March 15-16th. Hopfully still be a 242. Just started the first of 3 phases getting ready for it. As I gotten older (I'm almost 40) I have found that i need more deloads and rest. So this time around I'm taking every 5th week off until the meet.

pretty sick with a cold, so no other work today.

I just started Atlarges protien powder a week ago along with ets. This stuff is great tasting and stirs with a spoon. Already up 8 lbs. It's been a long time since I actually liked the way my shakes taste. Now I'm not saying the 8 lbs is solid muscle or just from the protien powder. I just started this meet cycle so meals are larger, on a clock and more dense than normal. But enjoying what the shake taste like sure does help.

I'll be keeping this log here in my quest to qualify for the senior nationals.

wow, lots of replies, thanks everyone, you make a guy feel very welcome.

The shirt is great, I started in a black inzer dd, went to karins dd, then several single ply titan shirts until finally a katana (last shirt I competed in). All the shirts were very good. I have never tried a metal shirt but plan to eventually. The thing I like about the phenom is how much it will stretch and still stop heavy weight. It has the largest sweet spot of all the shirts i have tried, very forgiving.

The ETS is just as good as advertised. Even with my cold I am able to train up to normal speed. The thing I really like about thier products is no outragous claims. Just good quality and good quanity for the price.

My last training cycle was complety raw. I was preparing for a raw meet which I set 4 world records and totaled elite. I really wanted to have both elite totals equipped and raw, it shuts up the haters, LOL. I currently have a 1670 raw total and a 2000 equipped total at 242.

I have 3 phases set up for this meet. 4 weeks, rest, 4 weeks, rest, 4 weeks, deload, rest, meet. I took box squats out to get more time going full range in my gear. I just started using briefs under my boss suit and the metal ace briefs are beastly.

I have a mono-lift at my house and about 1000lbs in 45's, bench, dl bar coming next week and a glute ham raise. Power rack and forza bench coming in 08'. We mix up chains, bands, raw and full gear work. I'm not huge on percentages, and only have a general idea of what i am going to do and what weight i want when I lift.

I have lifted APA and SPF, I currently hold every 242 full power raw world record in the SPF. This will be my first APF meet. I live near Memphis.

For the singles I step back from the bar, and then completly restart. I like doing this on my work sets. Not only does it train me to set up correctly, but it prevents injuries. You rarely ever see an injury during the first rep of a dl (unless it's a bicep injury). Mosty it comes from doing multiple reps. Both tapping the bar on the ground (rapid deload of the spine) and repulling with the bar out in front while fatigued are great ways to injure ones back.

I really not sure, Jump stretch says about 450, but I'm pretty sure thats choked around a 4"base. There were just placed around a piece of 1/2" rebat I have welded to a plate that slides uner the power rack. We estimated on the light side.

18 years next month, from 150 to 250lbs in that time. Although i hover around 240 most of the year. I'll be 39 in April, no not bad for an "old guy"

busy man. X-mas shopping, drove to Nashville saturday to pick up martial arts mats and a bunch of muay thai gear. Trying to get the gym finished also. I really cannot wait to x-mas is over and things are back to normal.

yeah no **** man. It looks like I lost out on that monolift but Im gonna get another power rack and a reverse hyper form new york barbells next week. So Ill just permanetly mount that swing arm on my old one. Your training looks stout though. Well time for work man later.

thanks Mickey. I slipped and fell down some stairs Wed morning (not druck, just half asleep) tweaked my back just a hair.

12/21 me squat

675x1 real fast, super easy, probably have another 100lbs in just briefs.

put suit on loaded 765, but had a little pain in my right side lower back, unracked the weight but decided to play it smart. Reracked and called it a day.

Off completly next week, no work outs at all. Start Phase two the week after. All squats work outs will be out of the mono and in full gear from here on out. Be in my shirt 3 out of the next four work outs. My Texas Deadlift bar should be in any day.

weighed in right at 242 today. Feel good. Still on track for my original projected openers 800/540/625, but those could go change.

thanks. Skipped today and slept in, sometimes you just got to get rest i guess. Tommorow the Chiro and i can't wait. I have not been adjusted in over a year and a half. I'll let ya know how it goes. Thurs will be upper back and I'll probably pull light and fast against mini's after squat Friday.

It's been a while, probably to long.

Well, I'm a mess, LOL. Spasms everywhere, right hip locked up, need arches in both my shoes but especially right foot. There was bunch of stuff, the full exam took almost 2 hours, he had all kind of new high tech stuff, pretty cool.

I go back tommorow to get worked on some, especialy the hip. Made an appointment with my regular doc for a referral to a podiatrist for the inserts.

So hopfully after a few visits my back wil stop acting up and I can get some real heavy weight on the bar. I'll keep the log posted with my results from adjustments and stuff.

I will get to the gym tommorow!

ok, went back on Thurs and got measured for the arch supports and adjusted.

Went to the gym and took it easy.

dl from floor 135 for a few sets

powercleans 135 for a few sets

snatchs 135 for 18, 11

some hanging snatchs just for fun.

Almost threw up after the 18 rep set. What was evem more funny was watching all three of my training partners (6'4"220, 6'1"240 and 5'9"225) all try and fail at even one snatch with 135. Gotta love technique.

We trained at the house on Friday, everything out of the mono, no suits, briefs, knee wraps this week, just a belt

just a terrible day in the shirt, I apparently gained 8-9 pounds and it's a hair tighter. Tried everything to get 515 and 535 to touch but no way today. Took shirt off and had trouble with 405 raw (I can normally do this for 3-5 reps paused), don't know what the problem was.

600x1 the second rep webber grabbed because it was moving the the left. On further review my hands were spaced unevenly.

Huge pr and huge confidence builder going into the rest week. Next week will be light band work for recovery no weight. After next week it's all out until the meet. BW is hovering around 246-50 which is perfect. I'll take openers the first week back and one last time 2 weeks out.

No pain in arms today everything felt right. Controlled the 600 very good all the way down, I would love to see it go once in training off the chest before the meet.

thanks sid, it felt real good coming up. My back is pretty tweaked from the dl, so I skipped working out on friday. Next week is completly off and i need it. Hopfully the back will heal up. Going to play it smart the first week back and then go a little heavier and them the third week hit openers. I'm starting getting a little excited now, I just hope the back holds up.

took me a half hour to find my log, LOL

finally back in the gym, the rest week was much needed and my back feels much better. The chiro fixed me up pretty good, but still took it half speed today.

41 days until the meet. This week is just to make sure the back is 100%

today bench supersetted with wide grip lat pulls

both for 4 sets 225 for 3-5 reps paused all close grip.

ab work tonight, tues off, wed chiro, then upper back and abs again. Thurs off then back test on friday with dl and squat. Hopfully monday back full steam for 2 good weeks and then openers. Some how i lost alomost 10lbs over the rest week, need to call Chris and get a couple more jugs of Nitrean.

thats what I was thinking, I also ran out of malodextrin that I add to my nitrean shakes. Just got some more yesterday, so hopfully the extra cals will help.

Ok, went to the chiro today and lower back is much better. This is the best scan we have had to date. After I left I went to the gym.

did 4 sets, super setted close grip seated cable rows to neck, incline sit ups and ghr's. Whenever you have a lower back problem it's almost related to weak abs or an imbalance. So I'm killing my abs and postior chain until the meet. This work out felt great. I have also been doing some serious stretching everynight at bedtime. If you guys are not stretching, START!

Tommorow off, Friday, ghr's, abs, raw squat and dl, nothing to crazy.

Monday.....balls to wall.

I made my own jump stretch platform and I think I made the connection points to wide and increased the band tension at top. It was very hard to lock out 135.

tommorow, back at it, heavy bench, I can't wait.

Strong workout. I use quad minis on the rack and that tension is nuts, I can't imagine them off a wide jump stretch platform.

BUT, upon further review I blew the seam connecting the sleeve to the chest plate on the right side. Inzer said they might have to patch it, no sure if that is legal in the apf. Not good. Will know more when shirt gets there on Wed.

ghr's 2 sets of 15 then 1 set of 15 with green band around neck.

ahh, good news though, Sean Lattimer just told me the patches are legal so I'm calling tommorow and having both seams reinforced and patched, just hope they can get it back quickly.

this is my second blow out. My first was with a karins dd, I was about 3 inches from touching 525 and it completly tore all the way through. No warning and it was loud. My spotter had no time to react, but we train in a power rack with the pins set to catch the bar just after it hits out chest so no biggie.

This time I did not hear it, but my spotter did. The shirts crackle and stretch and make all kinds of noises. But this time he said he heard a little pop and thought it tore somewhere. I had no problem with the weight and it only tore the stitching about one inch right on a seam, not all the way through.

Pretty scary still, my next set was 600 and you can imagine that coming down on you fast, even with the bars, it's a scary thing.

thanks, I wish I could take credit, but a long time USAPL lifter named Jack Reape, showed me it. He is in the Navy and travels alot, so when he gets to gyms with slick benchs he puts the bands over them.

Hey, I actually worked out today. From about the 13th until Sat night I had a brutal on/off migraine headache. I have no idea what triggered it, but it just would not go away. Feeling better as of yeasterday, so hit bench today. Shirt is still not back from INzer, so this all raw.

thanks Ben I beleive we have competed together in strongman, but not for sure. Did you complete in NASS comps from 99-2003? I did the nationals in Nashville and Euless, TX. Several others in Euless and some in St. Louis after Willie took over. Just wondering.

Something else I am doing different is cutting the speed work until the week of the meet. Since I'm competing on a Sunday, I'm going to go really light Mon-Tues before the meet. Not going to take the usual 7 days off this time.

As usual, I feel completly unprepaired for the meet, so everything is right on track, LOL.

I don't know whats going on Kill. I've had plenty of rest, nutrition is good etc.. But I'm just not feeling it. I should have went 495 and 585 with those bands, but just did not have in me.

I like the phenom, you need to touch higher in it, which I like because I can keep my hands over my elbows. I have found it does not work as well pulled way down, you need to stay right on the smallest part of the chest plate and let the shirt stretch. It will not perform as well as other shirts when you try and press on the collar. It's very forgiving and I'm able to get "get back" weight that many times would have been lost in other shirts.

If you decide to get one, make sure you get the sleeves REALLY tight and the chest plate REALLY small. This shirt stretchs and things to need to be very tight. The first few times you use it you may not be able to get your hands to max width and this will be a good thing. Also, the shirt makes more noises than any other i have worn, it cracks and pops all the time. Be prepared for it.

Unlike the the rage-x that cannot be altered much (no chest plate adjustment with pgx material) the phenom can be adjusted everywhere. When your paying good money for a shirt it should have unlimited adjustment for bw and strength increases/decreases IMO.

well I've decided to listen to the doc and chiro and give the back a break. Anything 700+ in the squat and 600+ in the dl and I have a pain in the same spot every time.

Going to lay off squat/dl just a few weeks and then start back slowly and raw for a while. I'll still take some light stuff, but i think I will really kill the reverse hypers, ghr's and abs for a while and see if I can the back to 100%. There are a bucnh meets pretty close in May, June and July. I'm already scheduled to the SPF worlds on Oct 4th, but I would like to do something to split the time in between.

A little dissappointed, but it was good training cylce overall with several pr's. I also learned a few things, and those things will go into the next cycles. Once again I started offgreat on abs and accesory stuff only to lag in the middle. This is something I need to fix, my core has to be bulletproof and is my number one goal right now.

Still, I have one year and one month until I turn 40 and thats where all my real goals are at. I have to remind myself of that at times.

The log will change a bit, back to volume and a more basic westside template. For those that follow my log, if you see me laggin on that core work, please kick my ass, thanks.

back feels great , but still being very careful. I have an appointment next monday for my MRI referral.

Went to the meet this weekwnd and had a blast. One of my guys competed, this was his first meet. He went raw, no knee or wrist wraps. 574-474-606 for 1654 @ 275 which is spot on raw elite! he has been training with us for about 9 months.

Got to meet and talk to Robert Wilkerson (kingkong) Jim Hoskinson, Chris Clark, Gunny Green, Gary Frank etc. It was great.

I was wondering what wrist wrap you would recommend for a lifter looking for a cast type feeling. I just tried APTs Black Mambas and they blew Metal All Black knee wraps out of the water, so APT sounded like a good place to get new wrist wraps as well.

good question, I guess I was always pretty good at conventional so I just did that. I think it can only help my conv pull. I will continue to work up as heavy as possible sumo and then switch to conv for my working sets and see how it goes.

As you can see by my Sig I picked up Anderson powerlifting (Ken Anderson a Titan distributor) so I will be going back to a katana. He's making me a custom 48 chest, 50 arm with a slight scoop to the neck that should be ready next week.

So the plans are maybe a single ply meet in a 44 Centurian super+, the katana and of course raw deadlifting:). I'm thinking 750-800, 530-550, 650-700 single ply, so somewhere near 2000@242.

Going back into the single ply suit starting Friday and see where things are at.

My best ever raw bench in a comp was 430 with a near miss at 460. But i had trained raw for 12 weeks prior. Normally I'm good for around 410-20. My best single ply press in a comp is 530, with a near miss at 550. So somewhere between 100-150lbs.

I just got my single ply boxer briefs 44 ngx super + in. I will try these tommorow. Not sure, but I'm thining of doing a meet in Gatlinburg on June 7th. This would be in all single ply.

The back feels great and the core work seemed to be the trick. I also replaced one of my shakes with a regular meal and have started gaining weight. I weighed 244.6 at the gym today (an hour after waking up).

been slacking a bit due to changing jobs from one hospital to another. After 19 years of shift work I managed a M-F dayshift, woohoo!. Finally get to start working out full time with the team. I banged up my right shoulder lifting a stupid coffee table a couple of sats ago, but it feels better now. Mon and wed of this week I took it light hammered my core pretty good. Today i worked on my sumo dl. The 500x8 vid is up in the main forum.

Starting mon I'm back full steam and preparing for either an SPF or APA meet.

I am trying to decide between going single ply and shooting for elite so I will have an elite total raw, single and multi ply or grabbing some APA 242 raw world records. I'm leaning towards single ply, but who knows.

The reverse band pulls to stomach really make you push your belly towards the bar, great for strength and technique, especially for us sexy skinny types:)

Hey, I'm back from vacation and it has been a great 3 weeks off. My body really needed the rest. I actually forgot what it is like not to have aches in my forearms and shoulders, LOL. Back to the gym on Monday and starting to get ready for the SPF worlds in Oct. All the guys I train with are doing the meet so it should be a fun training cycle. I managed to drop about 8-10 lbs during the break, but it's back to real eating starting tommorow.

Yeah, I did some pretty serious eating, but it was more random and not my usual eating on a schedule, which seems to keep the weight on me.

The harness is worth the money if you do movements. We rotate them in regulary and there is three of us using it so it was worth it for us. As far of how it works/feels, it's just amazing.

Ok took the first week back pretty easy. Last week turned it up some. Monday did work sets raw with 315 for 3 sets of 8, some abs and ghrs. Wed I made my intense day and worked up to a 525 SLDL. Starting today it's back to my normal split Mon bench, Wed-dl, Fri-squat with either tues or thurs as assistence stuff. Both my trainnig partners have decided to do the SPF worlds raw, so I might do it in single ply. Going to do the next 2-3 weeks raw and then make a final decision. Bw is still spot on at 240.

Going to have to walk squats out for at least the next month, it's just to hot here to go out of the mono in the garage.

I will start adding shakes and creatine back this week, I have managed to keep my weight without any shakes for the last month.

This will be a 10 week training cycle, so 3-3 week waves and a deload should work out pretty good.

It did not take long to remember why I do not do floor press, these kill my elbows. The guys I train with get to gym about 30 mins before I do and are already warmed up and going when I get there. Last day, just went in and warmed up with bands on the bench, some low squats and band dl's. Felt really good. Probably take a few hot epson salt baths and a bunch of stretching. Body weight is right at 240-2. Lots and lots of water all day everyday.

drove out to Gatlingburg early Thursday morning and just barely made weigh in at noon Friday, I weighed in at 232, 10 pounds light due to being sick all week. Took the boys out all day to play around Gatlinburg area.

Meet started with rules at 8:30 am and ended with awards at 11:00pm! It was a long ass day with around 100 lifters. I took my first squat at around 10:00 and my first bench aroud 4:30, so a huge wait in between lifts.

I wore all single ply gear, the squat suit is a 2 year old loner and dl suit I am the third owner of and I can pull on myself easy.

ok, here we go:

squats, opened with 750, felt heavy coming out of the rack, but easy lift.
second, 775, felt real heavy, good lift
third, this was to beat my best ever double ply squat so I went 805 (pr), felt like a ton out of the rack, and it was close to the hardest i have ever pushed but good lift, nice a deep.

bench, warm ups went well, opened with 500, easy.
second, 530, shirt slipped on setup but still grinded it out.
third 550 (pr) nice clean lift

deadlift, I upped my opener to 645 so I would I have 2000 total, easy lift.
second 675 for a pr, got it. Total 2030. Thought about taking 700 for a ride, but it was around 10:00pm and I had not eaten much all day and already had a pr, so we called it quits.

squat- 805
bench- 550
dl- 675
total- 2030@232

all world records and all pr's. I am now elite raw, single and multi-ply.

One person had a bigger total than I did but he also weighed 100lbs more.

there were lifters from 14 to 80 years old, and even a female that got a prostetic leg a week ago and still benched and deadlifted, just amazing.

Got to meet a alot of great lifters, and some people that post here, and it was a pleasure.

It was long drive back and I ended up getting a migraine and I am still bit sick from it as I type, but other than that a good weekend, no injuries for anyone and the boys had a great time. Got all lifts except one on video and will be posting those in the next few days.

it was great getting to talk to you. Not sure about the next meet or what gear yet. Going to take this week off and then get back at it next week. I may do another single ply meet someday, but it will be in tight gear to see what I can really do.

I have decided to wait until I turn 40 (this coming April) to compete again. I'm either doing the APF masters nationals or the SPF nationals, both are in May 2009. My boys start competitive baseball in 2 weeks so it's time for training to take a back seat for a while. I'm actually looking forward to the break, although I will still train my normal days and still in gear off and on.

I actually enjoyed training single ply, and at this point I am unsure whether I will go back in double ply or stay single ply. I am going to get a new shirt and suit from Anderson powerlifting and these will be TIGHT! I would love to go 900/600/700 single ply weighing under 240lbs.

After the new year I will decide the direction.

On a brighter note my boys rolled with Royce Gracie last night and got thier next belts from him. He said they looked better than many of the adult blue belts, pretty cool.

Well we have been taking it easy during the holidays, I hit it yesterday, just some close grip bench, lat pulls, rotator cuff etc.

I have decided I am doing the APF masters nationals in Baton Rouge in May. I am hoping to qualify for the WPC worlds which will be in Bournemouth, England!. This is the plan, win the masters nationals, win the the masters division at the WPC worlds in England, thats it, and I will do it.

box jumps, worked up to 41" then added 20lb db's in each hand and worked back up to 41" not bad for an old guy.

My lower back is fried. Good night, working on weaknesses and trying to bulletproof the midsection.

yesterday 12/12 I did a variety of things and boxed jumped again, this time with 30 lb db's in each hand. I have been really working my midsection, lower back and on my speed. I will continue this through the new year and then start a conventional wave cycle.

Ok, monday there was ice and the gym closed early, so I had to hit it today instead. I have not gone heavy in around 2 months and I have been sick with a bad cold for the last week, along with working 120 hours every two weeks, so I was not expecting much.
