View Full Version : Drinking a lot of milk....unhealthy or ok?

I was thinking about this yesterday. Instead of buying weightgainer powders, whey protein, or all the contents of making your own weightgainer shake....why not just drink a lot of milk? Like as much as a gallon a day depending on your needs....that would be 2500 calories in a gallon. Even drinking a half gallon a day contains more calories than most servings in weightgainer powders.

It would certainly be cheaper and easier than going the weightgainer powder route or even the homemade shake route. Not to mention, that's great for the bones with all the calcium.

I'm sure there's some negative aspect of this I'm missing? Maybe too much milk is a bad thing?

um thats allot of milk to consume, not sure your body can consume that much milk in a days time, and if your still consuming the needed water, you will be peeing every 30 minutes, that and have the runs like a newborn infant.

i think i drink allot of milk but only consume about a 1/8-1/4gal a day.
all these sists i have on my body might be realted to all the milk i drink, but i dont know for sure

I drink half a gallon of whole milk a day pretty religiously, and even more sometimes. Never had any problems, besides having to pee A LOT.

hehe id only imagine that when your 40 or 50 years old, your gonna have alot of kidney stones :\

The only issue I see would pertain to lactose intolerance or malabsorption.

If neither of those are of concern, drink it up.

Keep in mind the only way you will know if you have problems with lactose (in excess of what you typically consume) is by actually drinking alot of milk.

Go for it. It is cheaper than weight gainer. You might be able to save yourself some more money by drinking milk + olive oil.

And if your body doesn't consume it within a day it.....goes bad? </sarcasm>
It doesn't matter. Big meals can take a long time to digest properly. Also, any liquid that doesn't dehydrate you (like coffee) counts towards your water intake.

Drinking milk does not cause one to get kidney stones, but it can cause someone who is prone to to kidney stones to get them more frequently.

Would you even have to take a protein supplement if you started to just drink a lot of milk? Wouldn't a lot of milk would give you a ton of protein...even for your daily goals? So you would save money there too. It seems like a good idea to just drink milk! Then, to jack up the calories even more...add olive oil.

I make my own weightgain shakes...so I have to buy all the contents of it PLUS buy whey protein. So it would not only be easier to just grab a jug of milk instead of mixing all the stuff together in a blender...it'd be a lot cheaper. :)

You never have to use protein supplements if you get enough.

Today I will get 400g from meat and about 32oz of milk.

I drink a ton of milk (sometimes just drink like half a gallon instead of a meal) and have no problems.

Yep, but the reasoning behind protein shakes is if you put 2.5 scoops in after your workout you just got 50-60 grams of protein. You'd need to drink about 6-7 cups of milk to accomplish the same thing. It's just a good way to get alot of protein very quickly.

I'd say drink as much as you can possibly take without getting upset stomachs or whatever. I've drank upwards of a gallon a day and at some point it just gets bloating. Having a big glass with each meal really adds up though.

I'm up to about a gallon a day......I feel fine.

Invain
01-16-2008, 05:44 PM
The only other thing I have to add is the fact that drinking a ton at once isn't always good. Sometimes if I've been lazy and am low on calories for the day I'll buy half a gallon and drink it within an hour or two. I usually have some nasty gas afterwards.

.5 gallons a day for me for about the last 5 months (oh **** I just realized that a lot of milk!). I feel better than ever!

(I keep a lot of scope around to get rid of the gross taste in my mouth though!)

How is milk cheaper than PP? Milk is like $6 a gallon nowadays. Whey is dirt cheap.

And excess calcium does not cause kidney stones.

Milk is good for you. Drink up.

Excess calcium wont happen. Our calcium absorption is dictated by hormones in our body. Our body wont allow excess calcium into our bodies.

Only real way to OD on calcium is by injecting it... supplements alone suck in general for calcium absorption.

It's like $4 a gallon. And when you add up all the stuff I put in my shakes including whey, it's cheaper.

Thing is the only milk i drink is in my protein shake to boost the protein numbers. Say one scoop of Protein powder is 24 g protein with water, if i use 250 ml or skimed milk it adds 8g protein, 500ml 16g protein. :> Milk is cool but like, too much farting and **** :O

$2.50 for a few days every few weeks too!

I drink about 3/4 - 1 gallon a day. It's such an easy way to get some quality protein and low GI carbs (yes, even though it's 'sugar' it burns relatively slowly) throughout the day! I have a mini-fridge in my cube at work and it's been one of the main reasons I've had any success at this.

There have been plenty of other threads on this. This particular thread is the first I have seen with so much criticism for drinking a lot of milk.

PS, Salt lake City, Utah. milk is 2.50 a gallon

OK. I double check at the supermarket just the other day to make sure I wasn't crazy. Low fat milk is $6.12 a gallon and 4% milk is $6.15. I knew that the price of dairy here was inflated, but I had no idea it was by that much.

Sup man you ever around BGSU? That's where I'm at. I see the exit to Ann Arbor whenever I head to/from campus.
