Sure man, just don't set them so high that it takes like 6 months to achieve or else you may start to feel disheartend.

TOTALLY agreed. I think that a few of mine are too high. :(:(

Yeah man, just take it one step at a time :)

I really am gonna teach myself to do a Lua Lua cartwheel, back flip and jumping swirl over the summer. Seriously...

Squats: 142.5k [313.5] - 6!
142.5k - 4

102.5k [225.5] - 20! This was quite a fast set considering.

front squats: 90k [198] - 8! I got a real good bar position on my shoulder here and it really helped me crank out a few more reps - or at least, didn't hinder me getting them.

92.5k [203.5] - 3! Could have got more but the bar was rolling off my shoulders.

SLDL's: 147.5k [324.5] - 4!
147.5k - 4

Static holds: 125k - 15 seconds (i had a bit of skin on my finger nipped by the bar for the entire duration. Ouch!)
130k - 8 seconds.

I did some calf and ab work too, but i can;t be arsed to record them on here...

This might come in handy one day if you intend to join the circus:) Or when your completely rat-assed and need to get home quickly.

92.5k [203.5] - 3! Could have got more but the bar was rolling off my shoulders.

Have you tried putting some chalk along your delts??.

hehe. That flip concoction looked so ace...

They don't use chalk in my gym, and i wear T-shirts, so i just place the bar on top of that. Position usually isn;t that bad, i'll just have to make sure i sort it out for next week. :)

push day today. I decided to see how the BB bench felt on my shoulder today.it's been about 5 months since i last BB benched, so i was pleasantly suprised. Not only did i lfit more than expected, but i remembered how much fun benching can be.

BB bench: 90k [198] - 9 These went up quite easily.
92.5k [203.5] - 5 + 1

weighted dips: 37.5k [82.5] - 6! Damn, 1 rep short of this months goal. ah well, they're just aims really. I really did feel sick after this set.
37.5k - 2

Decline press: 235k [517] - 6 + 2 negs

Militaries: 70k [154] - 4!

52.5k [115.5] - 12!

Seated skulls: 62.5k [137.5] - 6
62.5k - 3

All in all a good session. Well enjoyable.

Kneeling shrugs: 60k [132] x2 - 7!
60k x2 - 6

Awesome strength here on kneeling shrugs - my fault on that I confused kneeling with seated.

Seated hammers: 26k [57.2] x2 - 6ES!

Curious what is ES? After some of your sets. Nice hammer curl strength too very impressive.:cool:

The_Chicken_Daddy

I know, Fran. But i think he's starting to take the piss a litte now, don't you think? :)

Squats: 142.5k [313.5] - 8!
142.5k - 4

120k [264] - 10

I've dropped the 20 reppers for now. I'll just have a 12 rep set instead.

Front squats: 92.5k [203.5] - 8! Got good balance here again.
95k [209] - 4!

SLDLs: 147.5k [324.5] - 7!
147.5k - 3

Static holds: 130k - 15 seconds
135k - 8 seconds

Did some calf work too. I'm knackered...

Rob just outta curiosity since yer always b!tchin about your leg strength, why aren't you training them as you do other body parts? You coulda upped your squat weight and stayed in a lower rep range versus the 6-8 range. Just wonderin since for push and pull days you are going into lower rep ranges than on legs on your first major compound...

Ps. I will be back in the gym this week so you better start upping your PRs again. :D

The_Chicken_Daddy
04-23-2002, 03:43 PM
EP, it depends which week you catch me on. For example, next week i'll up the weight prolly only manage 4 or so reps y'know. Each week i gradually work up the reps and then up weight and reps tend to drop. I'm also ensuring that i use slightly higher reps on some push and pull exercises now too.

BB bench: 92.5k [203.5] - 9
95k [209] - 6

Benching is so much fun :D I can;t believe i forgot just how much...

Weighted dips: +36.25k - 7

I mis-read my log. This should have been +37.5k for progression and a new PB. I wa pissed. So much so that...

+40k [88] - 3!

Add on a bodyweight of 216 and i have a 300lb+ dip. Not too shabby if you ask me. If i had done 40 for my first set i would have probably managed 4-5 too.

Decline machine press: 235k [517] - 7!

Militaries: 70k [154] - 3
70k - 2 Real slow reps too.

55k [121] - 8

did some random cable side laterals with a 12 rep range. 15k a side i think. Don't really care.

Seated skulls: 62.5k - 5

Not as much progression as i'd like, but a proverbially monkey buttock spankin' workout non-the-less.

145k - 5

T bar rows: 75k [165] - 6! I'm keeping this weight next week.
56.25k [123.75] - 12!

CG low pulley row: 80k - 8
80k - 8

Rear flye machine: 50k [110] - 10!

Kneeling shrugs: 60k [132] x2 - 7
60k x2 - 6

Well if it makes you feel any better, i've only seen one dude actually touch the 199lbers. And he was a fookin' monstar ;)

Anycrap (i lmao when Gino used this phrase), execellenté leg day. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Squats: 145k [319] - 6!
145k - 6

120 - 12

front squats: 95k [209] - 8!
97.5k [214.5] - 4! These felt really strong on both sets.

SLDL's: 150k [330] - 8!
152.5k [335.5] - 2! The first set took alot outta my grip, hence the low reps on the second set. These were the highlight of the workout tho. On the first set the reps just kept on a'commin'! :D

Static holds: 135k - 12 seconds
137.5k - 8 seconds

Finished up with some calf work and some ab work.

Well i went to see the blues bros at the theatre last night. Twas tres bien, and i was drunk off my ass again. And the late night naan bread and chips was lush. The margarita was also ace.

BB bench: 95k [209] - 9 + 1
95k - 6 + 1

Weighted dips: +40k [88] - 4!
40k - 2

Decline machine press: 235k [517] - 8! +1

Some dude had been doing cable flyes in the crossover apparatus and left the bench there, so i gave it a whirl.

cable flyes: 30k x2 - 8

They felt strange at first, but they were good.

Militaries: 70k [154] - 6!
55k - 9

Did some random cable side laterals. Nothing worth recording.
I was really beat by now so didn't bother with seated skulls. I just wanted to do something quick for triceps and get outta the gym.

V bar pressdown: 100k [220] - 11

I then did a drop set with 100k --> 70k.

And that's the end of that chapter.

Smoke me a kipper, i'll be back for breakfast.

one arm hammer strength row: 40k - 8
50k - 4

Low cable row: 80k - 12
81.25k - 7

Rear flye machine: 51.25k - 7!
51.25k - 4

Kneeling shrugs: 60k x2 - 8!

"Men at Work"?

B&I: i know it sounds gay, but the gym is ace, and it's just down the road for me so i really don't care.

I've been clubbing for the past two nights running  I was drunk off my ass on friday but not so bad last night. I'm going out tonight too. Last night out for a while though. I've run out of money and i have exams coming up :(

Due to last night's shinnanigans today's workout was purely the basics and necessities cause i was gonna spew and my gym was too hot to stay too long. The session was short and sweet:

Squats: 145k [319] - 8!
147.5 [324.5] - 4!
122.5k - 8

Front squats: 97.5k [214.5] - 5!

SLDL's: 152.5k [335.5] - 7! Could have gotten 8 but didn't want my back to start rounding.
155k - 1 damn left hand grip. Take two:
155k [341] - 4!

Progression on stiffs is skyrocketing lately.

Static holds: 140k - 8 seconds
140k - 5 seconds. Need to work on these fro now on in. I think i shall work up to 20-30 seconds.

And that was that. I am really fooked right now...

Yes? :)

Well last night was a blast. After hours we ended up at my mates flat in the city centre [in the bigg market for anyone who knows the area.] He had nothing except a bottle of nasty wine as a source of alcohol for consumption so we phoned this dial-a-peev hotline where you can order drink 24 hours a day. Crate of Fosters. Sorted.

We got hungry and so decided to go to the munchies pizza place up the road. While here we heard on galaxy the Rodger Sanchez set that was being played on Baltic square next to the old flour mill cause it was Shindig's 10th year anniversary of being held in Newcastle. There was 3000 people there when we heard it on the radio. Well me and another lad who is the boyfriend of a girl i know were the only ones up for going down to the quayside to try and sneak in. It was about 2am by this time.

So we went back to the flat, picked up some beers and headed off. On the way down we get talking to some scottish lads who were up for the bank holiday weekend and had been to Manchester the previous night to go see Kylie perform [jammy bastards.] Anyhoo, they were out gallivanting cause one of them had a heroin problem and wanted a fix. They thought we could help them lol. 2:30am on the way down to Newcastle quayside and asking us pissheads for gear haha. Anyhoo, we took them back to their hotel cause they were lost and told them not to bother getting a taxi to the outskirts of the city for drugs cause they'd get kicked in. So we left them and headed on...

We got to the riverside and noticed what actually was a German submarine in the river Tyne. There was a German dude called 'Sven' guarding it (a rather scandinavian name for a German eh?) He was quite cool. Turns out they were over here on a training exercise with the lads from the royal navy who were docked over the other side of the river. Anyhoo, we were flabbergasted cause we'd never seen a sub up close. We ended up talking to some other dudes walking back from the direction we were heading in cause they too had been over to the baltic to try and check out the crack but no one was there. We went anyway of course, but only after we'd ripped Sven a bit with 5-1 chants ;)

We got over the Millenium Bridge (which took about 45 minutes cause we had a rest half way over haha. it's hyoooge! It would have only taken 5 minutes if we weren't pished. :))

So Baltic square was empty at about 3:30am except for a few security guards and some technicians taking stuff down from the gig. We talked to one of the guards who said that the bridge was supposed to be closed from one side and we shouldn't be there, but we stayed for a bit anyway. He told us that there was loads of prep going on already cause the Queen is gonna be there on Tuesday apparently. Fook knows why, something about opening the Baltic museum. And so we headed on...

We decide to walk up to club foundation - the venue for shindig every saturday night - to see if they had all moved up there cause i heard the gig was on till about 4am. This was, of course, after we had tried to break into the Mal Maison hotel to try and meet Rodger Sanchez lol. We're crap burglars haha. By the time we got to foundation at about 4:30am there was not a soul in sight. The shutters were down and it was basically a ghost town. Time to head back we thought. so we went the "quick" way. This basically involves walking in the middle of the central motorway through Newcasle city centre lol. We get to Swan House roundabout (a huge roundabout) and there's a car just sitting there in the middle of the road, lights out and seemingly empty. it was about 50 yards from us. As soon as we stepped into the roundabout road the lights flashed on and came straight for us. we just managed to get out of the way and the car kept speeding past and out of sight. I have no clue what the f*ck was going on there, but we were still drunk and didn't really care haha. So anyhoo, we eventually got back to the flat at around 5am ish. I was back awake just before 9am

And that was Robboe's late night/early morning drunken mission through newcastle for this week. It also brings to a close Rob's 3 day going-out-and-getting-drunk-off-my-ass spree. Seven weeks ago i have £760+ in my bank account. As of Today i have £8. All on going out and drinking. Shame on me. ah well...

Rob doesn't have any more nights out planned for a while in cae you're wondering.

And they all lived happily ever after. The end. :)

A good friend will bail you out of jail. A best friend will be sitting next to saying "That was awesome! Let's do it again!"

Suprisingly good workout considering my lack of sleep is catching up with me.

BB Bench: 97.5k [214.5] - 8

I am so tempted to put 2 plates a side on the bar next week and get a PB.

97.5k - 6

Weighted dips: +40k [88] - 5!
+40k - 3

These felt quite strong. I maybe could have managed 6 reps on the first set but straining is not something i like doing when dipping.

Decline machine press: 235k [517] - 10!
235k - 7

Militaries: 70k - 5
70k - 1 lol.

55k - 10

V bar pressdown: 100k [220] - 13

I didnt even wait between sets to do these. Just straight on and cranked out 13 without breaking a sweat. New PB. I'm not really gauging my triceps work right now though. My chest and shoulder pressing seems to be screwing them over for me good style.

Hmmmm...This must be a blonde moment cause i'm totally lost.

Hi row: 147.5k [324.5] - 5!
147.5k - 4

T bars: 75k [165] - 7!
57.5k [126.5] - 10

Low cable row: 81.25k [178.75] - 9
81.25k - 6

Rear flye machine: 51.25k [112.75] - 8!

There's no need for two sets on here now that i've added an extra row regularly.

Kneeling shrugs: 60k [132] x2 - 9!
60k x2 - 7

Good session.

Yeah EP, you gotta catch up :). Only 3 more weeks of bulking left for Robboe though, so during my 12-15 weeks of cutting you'll prolly surpass me.

Belial, no idea mate. I tried some wide grip chins at the end of my back work out a few weeks ago and struggled on the 6th rep haha. Only bodyweight too. I can prolly manage some weight pull ups with an underhand shoulder width grip quasi-easily though.

Finished up with some calf and ab work. Good fun.

~Bows to his adoring public~

Today's session was ace.

Why?

Because...

"IT'S EVOLUTION, BABY!!"

Seriously though, here's why:

My PB for BB bench was 100k [220lbs] for 3 which i set a few months before i started cuting back in July. Here's what happend today...

BB bench: 100k [220] - 6! +2
100k - 4

Weighted dips: +40k [88] - 6!
+40k - 4

I'm really suprised i can still get an extra rep each week on these, since my bodyweight has been going up too. I gotta dmit though, that 6th rep was killa. I felt physically sick afterwards.

Decline machine press: 235k - 11 + 2 negatives

Now this goes against all i believe in, i realise, but B&I made a good suggestion and i tried it. Flat flyes seem to anoy my left shoulder, so i put a block of wood in the setting which made these...~sigh~...Incline flyes

Incline DB flyes: 32k [70.4] x2 - 7

Militaries: 70k [154] - 4 + 2

These were done with a really slow tempo.

55k - 8

Lying skulls: 45k - 12
55k - 8

All in all (is all we all are) it was good fun. Pull is on thursday.

Yeah, but if you are of the 'either a muscle is contracted or not amd that's all there is to it' school, then it makes no difference if you're doing them at an incline or not, other than the fact that it alleviates shoulder discomfort. So where's the shame?

CD, do you have a shoulder injury? There is a good shoulder rehab artilce at elitefts.

The_Chicken_Daddy
05-14-2002, 02:14 PM
Not really no, but i used to get a pain in the back of my shoulder when i did flat BB bench. I switched to DB presses and i got no pain.

I think i actually got it from doing upright rows.

I tried flat flyes a few weeks ago and i felt a twinge of the pain i used to get from flat BB benching.

I'd like to see the article either way. Can you link me up?

Anyhoo, out of pure boredom i decided to take some new measurements. The ones i took last was from february 28th and were as such:

Right & left quads: 25"

right calf: 15 5/8"

left calf: 15 3/4"

Chest: 45 1/2"

right arm: 15 3/4"

left arm: 15 1/4"

Today, 16th May, they were as follows:

Right & left quads: 27"

right calf: 16 1/2"

left calf: 16 2/8"

Chest: 46"

right arm: 16 6/8" <~~~~ This one shocked the hell outta me. I'm two-eigths of an inch away from 17" GUNZ!!

left arm: 16 1/2"

Anyhoo, thought you freaks may wanna know.

I wish i had gained a bit more on my chest and back though. Maybe the measurements were taken properly the first time. I dunno.

And i do expect those measurements to fall a bit after cutting. Maybe 0.5" off arms and about an inch off chest measurement.

Awesome results, man. Though the chest thing is really weird, IMO(Still a great measurement, either way) The only thing I can figure out is that you took the measurement differently.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how they change after dieting. Before I started dieting my arms were about 17.5"(With me measuring, so take it with a grain of salt) Now, with me 25lbs lighter they're about 16.25. Boo. Quads from a bit over 28" to 26.5" or so. Waist went from 38 or so to around 33-34. Still got a ways to go, though.

ElPietro
05-16-2002, 08:26 AM
Wouldn't chest be difficult to get the exact same measurment each time? You are measuring from a point under the armpit but I'm not sure if you can find exactly where the pec ends each time can you? also where across the chest do you measure? is it across the nipples or right up under your arm and across which would be the upper area? I've searched for a more articulate answer to chest measuring but all explanations I've found so far have been quite vague...I also guess waistline measurement between people are always quite different as some people are measure straight across the navel and others aren't...also i'd guess some people are pulling the tape tighter than they should on some measurements and loose on others...

just curious on those two measurements though if you could elaborate...

The_Chicken_Daddy
05-16-2002, 08:37 AM
Waist = over the navel.

My chest is under the armpits yes. I think one problem also is the tape measure getting caught on my skin. As daft as that sounds. I measure with my shirt off, and trying to get the tape measure in place on my own is hard cause it is shinny and "sticks" to my back haha. I can never be sure if i've got the tape measure in the "right" place, ie in line with where i'm measuring on my chest.

Anyhoo, from this bulk i think my quads and shoulders have responded the most. Arms too.

I think i measured in well today cause i had chips after my drinking last night  It's like a little carb load hee hee.

I'm really gonna miss bulking, i swear. I gotta start reducing my drinking and junk food intake or cutting is gonna be damn hard.

A modified NHE, Mike.

Basically 20-30g carbs a day, except for post training where i'll do a small carb load with about ~200g carbs over 2-3 meals.

I'm gonna work out exact specifics and what-not within the next couple of weeks. I'll also work the actually diet out too, ie what foods i shall be eating and when. I'll keep you all posted :)

Correct. I do very little direct arm work. Usually 2 sets or so for triceps and about 1 set for biceps, if any.

High rows: 147.5k [324.5] - 6!
147.5k - 3

T bar rows: 76.25k [167.75] - 6!
77.5k [170.5] - 4!

57.5k - 12

Low cable row: 81.25k - 10

Rear flye machine: 52.5k [115.5] - 10!

Kneeling shrugs: 60k [132] x2 - 10!
60k x2 - 6

Seated hammers: 26k [57.2] x2 - 6 ES <~~~ This actually equals my personal best. Not that it really bothered me.

Excellent workout. I'm sure gonna miss progression like this when i'm cutting again.

Yeah, i was brought up on Guinness. Had my first pint ages six.

Anyhoo, i am still totally wankered from friday's expedition. We had to knock saturday night on the head cause of it. On the way there the freakin' bus broke down!

we didn't get back back till about 4:30am and then we spent an hour walking around Newcastle looking for a takeaway that was still open lol. we got back to my mate's flat at around 5am where we watched a bit of Blade and then i booked a taxi to go home. Go to bed around 6am.

The club itself was a slight disappointment. For starters, the dance/pop hall wasn't open. Only rooms open were the 70's/RnB lounge and the rave room. The rave room alone was the biggest club i've ever been in. Apparently the dance/pop room is even bigger. It really didn't suprise me that this place was the biggest club in Europe. What pissed me off most was that nearly every dude in the place was wearing those shirts with the big white collars and cuffs. I swear, i hate these designs of shirts with a passion. The black shirts with white c & c's look like referees!

Anyhoo, onto my last leg day of calorie surplus:

Squats: 150k [330] - 8!
150k - 6

125k [275] - 12

Front squats: 100k [220] - 5!

SLDL's: 157.5k [346.5] - 8!
160k [352] - 2 My grip gave out here on my left hand. I'll not count it as a PB until i manage 4 reps with it. Nice number though.

My grip was quite shot by now so i didn't bother with statics. I finished up with some quick calf work, but no ab work cause i was really tired.

I need to pull myself together for clubbing tonight. My mate moves up to Glasgow tomorow afternoon to live with his girlfriend so tonight is our last night out as a team. we're gonna make the most of it!

Cutting starts tomorrow. I haven't finalised any details yet - i should do that today really - once i have, i'll type them up for you all to get the gist of what i'm doing.

Bon Soir.

What was the club called?

Tall Trees.

Last night was quite an emotional night for me.

Anyhoo, i still haven't written up my diet yet, so today is gonna be quite spontaneous food-wise.

I have push later.

As per usual i was still drunk when i woke up this morning. I think my hangover timed itself nicely to coincide with my workout today. What a jolly chap Mr Hangover is.

My training partner also had to leave the session midway through from excruciating head pains. He really exerted himself on the machine decline press and was getting throbbing pains afterwards. I just hope it's nothing serious.

Something else that's pissing me off right now is how there's been a sudden influx of asian members. Don't get me wrong, i'm not racist, but these guys train in hordes and do like 20 sets per exercise. Not to mention the fact that they've closely moulded their exercise selections and training splits pretty much identical to mine and my training partner's. Therefore i couldn't be chewed to wait for certain things so stuff was shuffled up a tad.

BB bench: 100k - 6 + 2 no progression here this week. Probably due to Mr Hangover and Mr Lack-of-Sleep. Oh, and since i started cutting today i hadn't had any carbs at all before training (except the trace amount in my cashies :))
100k - 4 + 1

Weighted dips: 41.25k [90.75] - 5!

Incline flyes: 32k [70.4] x2 - 9
34k [74.8] x2 - 4 Stopped way short since Gary had already left by this time with his supected aneurysm.

Militaries: 55k [121] - 12
55k - 8

went light and higher reps with these exclusively this week as opposed to heavy weight first set, moderate weight second set. My head really wasn't in it by this time.

CG BP: 80k [176] - 6!

These next two weeks are me getting used to training almost depleted again and getting used to calorie deficit.

Like i said earlier, diet is off the cuff and here's what i've had:

1. Tuna + walnut oil
2. Chicken + cashews + Cottage cheese
3. 3 whole eggs, 4 whites
4. post workout drink
5. brown rice + tuna
6. oats + chicken
7. Steak

I suspect most days will look like this.

The_Chicken_Daddy
05-30-2002, 01:05 PM
I'm starting to slowly lower volume a tad now.

Pull:

High row: 150k [330] - 5.5 It's half a rep more than last week but i'm not counting it as a PB
150k - 2 Hmmm...

T bars: 77.5k [170.5] - 5
58.75k - 10

No progression on these then. I suspect it's me just getting used to training depleted again.

Cable row: 82.5k - 9!

Rear flye machine: 52.5k - 12!

Kneeling shrugs: 60k x2 - 12
60k x2 - 8

It was nice and short this session. Trained alone this time though.

Diet today has been the same as above pretty much, but i had some strawberries after my tuna this morning and i've started up all the green veg shite again. ~sigh~

I'm gonna use this opportunity to work on my fitness again. I've not done cardio in absolutely ages so now is the time. I'll mix it between moderate endurance crap and HIIT. Probably morning cardio too, since i'll be waking up early for the world cup matches as it is. May as well try and burn off some fat while i'm at it.

Anyhoo, cause of this, i'm debating whether to invest in some glutamine. I'm not usually a fan of the stuff, but i can get a kilo for 40 squids and that will last me probably the duration of the cutting cycle if i use it liberally. I'm thibking it may prove to be of use, despite me not being an actual "fan" of the stuff.

Any insights?

The_Chicken_Daddy

Well, it's been four days now. I'm gradually depleting so weight hasn't changed that much. I'm down 2.5lbs which seems ok to me. I'll keep things the same for now cause i reckon it'll take me about 2 weeks in total to be officially declared as "depleted" since i'm carbing up quite regularly.

Are you going into keto, CD? Or just a lower-carb plan?

The_Chicken_Daddy
06-01-2002, 07:25 AM
pfft...no keto, schweetheart.

Kinda modified NHE plan.

In a nutshell: I do a mini-carb load after training over 3 meals but eat no direct sources of carbs any other time.

Watched the england match this morning and since myg ym shuts at 2pm on a sunday, i had to fit this workout into a nice snug time limit. Not a problem. Good fun too.

Squats: 152.5k [335.5] - 6! Nice slow reps too.
152.5k - 4

127.5k [280.5] - 10

(No front squats this week you may notice)

SLDL's: 160k [352] - 8!

Leg press: 140k [308] - 12 Supersetted w/ Leg ext: 60k - 10

Leg press: 190k [418] - 12 Supersetted w/ Leg Ext: 60k - 4

Seated leg curl: 45k - 12

Did some quick calf raise supersets also. And then done was robboe. And then came the hobble home. Remember Monty Python's Ministry of Silly walks?

Yep, that was me...

Well i went clubbing last night. Didn't drink either - just water. I may do it again next monday. My cardio session was 3 hours of solid dancing. Good night too. Cause it was a bank holiday yesterday and a bank holiday today the city was heaving so all the taxi ranks had queues ridiculously long and i decided to walk home. Only took me 30 minutes but would have been about 4 hours had i been drinking.

Little history on the club i was at last night. It's currently called 'foundation'. The building itself used to be called 'the riverside' and upstairs at the back was where the video for "this charmless man" by 'The Smiths' was filmed and the venue was also the first stop on Nirvana's first ever European tour. cool eh?

Anyhoo, with little sleep in my i did push today.

BB bench: 100k [220] - 6 Same reps as last week. At least my strength hasn't totally plumetted now i'm more depleted.
100k - 3 + 1

The asians who seem to have adopted our split where pressurising me to hurry my sets on the bench. Naturally to annoy them i took even longer breaks between sets :D

Weight dips: 41.25k [90.75] - 4 these felt really strange this week for some reason. I didn't feel "stable" as usual or like i was in the same plane of motion as usual so i cut down to one set.

Decline machine press: 240k [528] - 9!

Incline flyes: 34k [74.8] x2 - 6!

Militaries: 70k [154] - 6 Strong set.
57.5k - 10 Another strong set.

Well, normally i would have done some CG benches, but guess what? The asians were STILL ON THE FUCKIN' BENCH! This is like 30 minutes after i left them to it. Fuckin' retards. I hope they die a slow and painful death and go to hell.

I did some V-bar pressdowns instead. Nothing to failure. 100k for 12 easy-peasy reps.

And then i was spent. So seven days without a cheat so far. Woo hoo!

chicken, your not going to do a week of carb free?

The_Chicken_Daddy
06-04-2002, 05:04 PM
Nah.

My bulking was more or less the same thing. Never more than three meals with carbs in and even that was just on training days. Non-training days just had one meal with a small amount of carbs in.

Besides, i can still become a fat burner if i'm not already one, it'll just take a bit longer. I still wanna try and add muscle despite cutting.

Okay, that decides it. You work out at a place called "Men at Work' AND you're able to dance sans alcohol? Uhh, are you abolutely sure you like girls? Really, there's no shame in admitting the truth.

lol.

I dance like a black man too.

There were a couple of good looking lasses watching me for a long while and kept moving about as if to attract my attention, but they seemed the kind of egotistical bitches so i kinda ignored them and continued in the grace of glory :)

I may pull some tarts next week though, again, sans alcofrol :)

In all honesty i don't have any.

Well i was supposed to start my cardio today but my legs were still a little sore from sunday. Not to mention it was raining. So instead i quite happily watched the US have a great first half against Portugal. I was well buzzin' when they won.

I was also in town today buying some new t-shirts and stuff. Also went to buy some glutamine. I had my cash out and my hand just about to pick up the tub and then i suddenly came to my senses and left the shop. Phew, that was a close one!

The_Chicken_Daddy

High row: 150k [330] - 6!
150k - 4

T bar row: 77.5k [170.5] - 5
58.75k - 11

C-G low cable row: 82.5k [181.5] - 9.5

Raer flye machine: 55k [121] - 6

Kneeling shrugs: 60k [132] x2 - 13!
60k x2 - 8

Good session. Suprised i progressed on anything actually cause I'm really starting to be depleted now. I weighed in a few days early just to see how things are ticking along and i've dropped another 2.5lbs. This is, of course, water and glycogen. I'll do my "official" weigh in on saturday still.

I think i'll start cardio tomorrow too with about 10-15 minutes of HIIT. Since i've not done cardio in ages i'll prolly start with jogging and walking as opposed to sprinting and running. I'm gonna edge myself into it. Hopefully this won't eat into my squat and SLDL progression though. If i can go up in each by one rep per week i'll still be one happy chappy.

Still no "cheating", although i'm really enjoying strawberry eating lol. I'm dieting, am i supposed to enjoy eating? :)

I got some full fat whipping cream too. They should go together nicely. ~drool~

Anyhoo, i've worked out what i'm currently eating and i'll type it up later and show everyone. Basically, on training days i'm sorted with just over 2600 cals. Rest days, however, weren't so happy. I've figured that i was eating below 2000 cals! Needless to say, that's been adjusted.

I'll post my grub a bit later once it's typed and finalised.

Hmmm...that's spelled wrong. Alas...

Ok, i said i'd post my diet and here it is:

Non-training days:

1. Tin tuna
3 tsp oil
(sometimes) strawberries

2. 60g chicken breast
150g cottage cheese
25g cashews
green veg

3. same as meal 1

4. same as meal 2

5. 5 egg whites, 5 whole eggs

6. same as meal 1

Daily totals: 235g pro, 24.5g carbs, 107.8g fat = 2008.2 kcals

Training days:

1. Tina tuna
2 tsp oil
(sometimes) strawberries

2. 60g chicken
100g cottage cheese
15g cashews
green veg

3. 50g maltodextrin, 50g destrose
4 scoops simply whey

4. 72g brown rice
tin tuna

5. 60g chicken
88g oats
100g cottage cheese

6. 4 egg whites, 3 whole eggs

7. 200g serloin steak
green veg

Daily totals: 257.1g pro, 216.5g carbs, 81.9g fat = 2631.5 kcals

06-10-2002, 03:52 PM
chicken, how much where you eating when bulking. Are you just going to drop straigt to 2600 and 2000 cals or slowly lower. 2000 seems kinda low, but you know you body best.

The_Chicken_Daddy
06-11-2002, 08:16 AM
About 3500 kcals on training days. Something like that anyway, i kinda stopped counting exactly. It does seem a little low, but i'm calorie cycling so i can probably get away with it. If i loose too much i'll up the cals straight away.

This is yesterdays leg workout:

Squats: 155k [341] - 4!
152.5k [335.5] - 6
127.5k [280.5] - 12

SLDLs: 162.5k [357.5] - 5!

Leg press: 200k [440] - 12
220k [484] - 12
250k [550] - 12!

Not too shabby considering i did 2 very strenuous sets before hand. Maybe next week i'll throw on 252.5k for my first set and see where i go from there.

Anyhoo, didn't do calf or ab work this week. Diet is still spot on. Haven't cheated yet and it's been two weeks today :D

I went clubbin' again last night. The place we went to was very quiet considering last week it was packed to the rafters for the bank holiday. I have push later and will update then.

Toodles.

The_Chicken_Daddy

Well the forums won;t open for me through internet explorer so i'm doing this through netscape and it's really annoying me. Taking ages to load stuff up to. Grr!

BB bench: 100k [220] - 4 + 2
100k - 3 + 1

Weighted dips: 41.25k [90.75] - 4

Decline machine press: 242.5k [533.5] - 9! + 2 neg
242.5k - 3 + 2 neg Very little rest between these two sets.

Incline flyes: 34k [74.8] x2 - 7! + 1 These seemed quasi-easy.
34k x2 - 3

Militaries: 70k [154] 4 + 2 My pressing is always adversely effected when i do my beyond weeks.

CGBP: 80k [176] - 7! The first 6 went up really easy, but on the 7th, i seemed to suddenly stick about 1/2 way up the rep. Still completed it anyway.

Good session overall. Today is the two week mark of cutting and no cheating yet :D

The_Chicken_Daddy
06-13-2002, 09:49 AM
Mediocre Pull session m'fraid.

High row: 150k [330] - 4 + 2
150k - 3

T bar row: 77.5k [170.5] - 5
58.75k [129.25] - 12

Bi-angular row (hammer strength): 80k [176] - 4 This was no where near to failure, but i found the exercise uncomfortable. The pad was pushing the wind out of me.

Rear flye machine: 55k [121] - 7!

Kneeling shrugs: 60k x2 - 10 bah.

I seemed to be really tired and drained mid-way through this workout. Damn cutting. Damn.

Maybe so, but it's quite disheartening not adding one rep each week anymore :(

Ahhh...thank God for leg day :D

Squats: 155k [341] - 5!
155k - 4 Ironically this set felt like the "stronger" of the two.

SLDL's: 162.5k [357.5] - 6! I had to really work for the last rep. Hard work t'was.

Leg press: 252.5k [555.5] - 10!

It seems like really low volume i realise, but anymore and i would have passed out. I was clubbing last night so i was still feeling the alcohol effects a tad and lack of sleep didn't assist.

I finished up with some calf work and a few sit ups.

BTW i've lost 2lb this week, which tells me that i'm more or less as depleed as i'm gonna get and that weight loss should be more steady from now on in.

It'll be down to water retention, Micky.

I was out clubbing again last night. Great night it was too. I was drinking again too, which probably explains why i had such a good session today - the sugars in the drinks probably replacing glycogen.

BB bench: 100k [220] - 5 Up a rep from last week.
90k - 8

Good sets. Thoroughly enjoyed these.

Weighted dips: +41.25k [90.75] - 5

This does equal a Personal Best, but i am lighter now, so kinda not, if yer smell what the Robboe is cooking. I've always had it so i measure the weight around my waist though, so as far as i'm concerned this is equalling a PB.

Incline flyes: 34k [74.8] x2 - 9! +1

Extremely strong set of flyes. Felt great. I may keep this weight until i can get 12 reps with relative ease.

Decline machine press: 242.5k - 7

For my shoulders i did something a bit different. I'm debating whether to drop OH presses altogether, so i'm not too fussed about pressing progression right now. Just keeping it fun.

side laterals: 12k x2 - 12 SS Militaries: 60k - 2

then the same but with less reps for the laterals and 40k used for about 6 reps on the millies. T'was good fun this.

The resident asian community were still taking turns on the bench so i couldn't get on to do CG BP straight away so:

Lying skulls: 55k - 5

I remembered why i don't do these regularly - they annoy my elbows.

Eventually...

CG BP: 82.5k [181.5] - 5!

ace ace ace ace ace....:D

Excellent session. Comments are welcome.

Yeah i'm seriously considering just saying to hell with OH presses.

Just do some side laterals after chest. I think doing while cutting may be a good idea too, to preserve as much muscle as possible (ie not over doing it.)

I've been playing 5-a-side footy for 90 minutes. Great HIIT workout, but my feet have suffered for it :( I have a huge blood blister on my right foot which is killing me, i've taken most of the skin off the top of my toes on my left foot and some on my right foot too. I'm really gonna be in pain tomorrow.

Well, after all the pain of blisters and what-not, what's hurting more today is my right ankle - mainly because i was walking funny on one side of my foot to avoid putting pressure on the big-ass blood blister in the ball of my foot. The tendon is quite tender. And i have hellish leg DOMS right now. Kerazee pain. But anyways...

High row: 150k [330] - 4
140k - 5

T bar rows: 77.5k [170.5] - 5 This is the 4th week running i've gotten 5 reps with that weight. At least my strength hasn;t dropped in it though.

60k [132] - 9

I then dropped the weight again and did a set with an overhand grip, which i did enjoy and will probably implement in for a while.

OH grip T bars: 40k [88] - 8

Very light weight, i know, but i haven;t done an overhand grip on these for absoluely ages so i'll start out relatively light to begin with.

Rear flye machine: 55k - 5

Kneeling shrugs: 60k x2 - 7 I was quite sapped by now. I think all the footy yesterday really quite drained me.

The_Chicken_Daddy
06-23-2002, 12:43 PM
I'm quite suprised i managed such a good workout today, following the DOMS that resulted from wednesday's footy. My ankle tendons (on the outside on my ankles) were still hurting so i didn't do any seated calf work, but read on for the little story of my standing calf work.

Squats: 155k [341] - 6!
155k - 6

Incidentally, my second set felt like the stronger of the two.

SLDL's: 165k [363] - 4!
165k - 3

Two good sets. My grip really is a limiting factor for deads - even with straps and a mixed grip.

Leg press: 255k [561] - 10!
255k - 8

Now, onto my standing calf raises. Basically, the standing calf machine is a stack with a fixed weight of 120k. I can attach a 5k plate, but nothing bigger, thus, my standing calf weight has never exceeded that. (And i've never felt comfortable with smith raises.) Basically, some genius at the gym has made a wooden brace that fits nicely onto the hack squat equipment, nice and snug on the platform. It allows free weight calf raises (so i can exceed 125k) and also allows for a great stretch and full ROM. So...

Standing calf raises: 160k [352] - 9
180k [396] - 8!

Now, this IS a PB cause i've never done hack raises with anything more than a crappy 1" thick bit of wood under my toes. I expect myself to drop reps right down for my first set in the future. I also expect my weight on this to increase - at least up to a point where i can still fit plates onto the equipment.

I weighed in yesterday down .5lbs down, which ain;t too shabby considering i've been out on the piss twice that week. I was retaining water at the time too, but what can ya do... I've dropped my pro and fat slightly for this week. We shall see how it goes.

Awesome strength Robboe nice leg strength.

Your squats do you go down to parallel or ATF (a*s to the floor)? Were kind of debating that in my journal you might wanna check it out.

Parallel.

My thighs are too long in relation to my body that i can't go ATF even if i wanted to. Not even without a bar on my back. Without falling over that is.

Haha I am only around 5'10" or 5'11" and I feel the same way. I really think that I too uncooridinated to do ATF squats. I find them extremely awkward etc.

Having been someone who was utterly convinced I could never squat ATF, or squat at all for that matter, I gotta say I think anybody--provided you spend a some serious time working on your form and flexibility--can do ATF squats. Now, of course, it's gonna be more difficult for someone like TCD, than me who is only 5'11'', and you're gonna have to really drop the weight back, but I sincerely think it's possible. Of course, I don't know that going down that low has any real benefit for you legs; your ass, yes, your legs, probably not. Frankly, I don't think squatting is the magical key to leg development that many proclaim it anyways, but then my legs are naturally fairly big so what the hell do I know.

I had someone very experienced in squatting spend a great deal of time showing me how to do it, so I had definitely had some help. To be honest, my own attempts at teaching myself were fruitless; I was using just a bar and still felt like I was gonna tip over at the bottom.

The funny thing is, just 4-5 months ago I saw the guy who taught me later squatting 315 with a belt, and his form was truly awful. He had gotten caught up in wanting to really get into the big poundages, and had let his form deteriorate as a result. I swear, I thought his back was gonna snap at any second. It was painful to watch. Sometimes I'm just as stupid, so I really shouldn't be talking.

I'll try to download MSN tonight. I swear.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...

Instead of my usual 4 scoops simply whey psot train in ym shake today, i used 2 scoops simply whey (choc) and 2 scoops of MET-RX pro-plus (vanilla cremé) and with my dextrose and malto it tasted truely delightful.

moving on.

BB bench: 100k [220] - 6
100k - 5

Strong sets. I was right pleased with both of them. After 4 weeks cutting, amazingly, i'm working my strength levels back to where they were already. Last cut this took about 4 months! My PB for BB bench is 100k for 7, so hopefully, providing all goes well, i'll be able to set a new PB! I'll be well chuffed if i do.

Incidentally, my current strength tells me that muscle loss has been minimal to non-existant thus far. Which i am greatly pleased about, especially how i am training quite depelted compared to how i was training when i was bulking.

Weighted dips: 41.15k [90.75] - 5

Second week running i've had 5 reps. baring in mind again, that 5 reps at this weight is a PB, albeit i set it at a higher bodyweight. Again, telling me muscle is being retained. I need to get some batteries for my callipers and start reading my "approximate" bf% so i can make sure it's going down nicely.

Decline machine press: 242.5k - 7 + 3 negatives

Ouch.

Incline DB flyes: 36k [79.2] - 6!

Again, well impressed.

No OH shoudler work this week, but i did some side laterals:

DB side laterals: 14k [30.8] x2 - 8!
14k x2 - 6

Wooo. Cause of the heat today i had my vest on and now i can start to see some definiton coming into my shoulders. As i was doing the exercise it was quite funky seeing the movement going on under the skin. Funky.

Some twats were on the bench so:

Lying skulls: 55k - 6

hey, one rep up from last week.

EZ bar CG bench: 75k - 6 + 1

And by now, i was fooked.

My legs were looking quite good this morning. Not amazingly cut, but defintely showing a difference from when i started. Today marks week 4 of my cutting and no cheating with food yet (only alcofrol on two occasions, where i wasn;t too fussed about drinking in the first place!)

Stay tuned for more wacky adventures...

I'm can't tell if you're joking or not. Vanilla + chocolate? I suppose it could taste good.

Be careful man. My big f*ck up when I started dieting last time was that I assumed that if my strength was staying constant or increasing, I wasn't losing an appreciable amount of muscle. Then I had my bf% tested and found out I'd lost about 7lbs of lbm. The body's an amazing thing; you might be losing muscle and still maintaining or increasing in strength due to increased neurological efficiency. Not that that's happening in your case, but it's something to be aware of.

Glad to hear the diet is going well. We're gonna need some photos of your riptitude, though.

The_Chicken_Daddy

Well the choc simpl whey is a "thin" consistency, whereas the met-rx is a "fluffy" kinda consistency and they went together really well. The sweetness of the dextrose was enough to satisfy any sugar cravings. Mmmmm...

I know what you mean, but visibly, i just look flat. And bear in mind i've only been at it for 4 weeks, i doubt muscle loss (if any) would be that great.

I;ll have photos up after this cut. (say abot 12 more weeks or so).

I got some more dextrose yesterday. I trapes all the way into the city to go to the large Boots chemist (despite there being on right round the block from me - it doesn't sell the stuff i want). The last time i got some from there the wifey got it from behind the counter. So the daft bint i got today was looking all round back of the shop and in drawers but decided they had none. I told her, for the third time, that the last lassie got the stuff from behind the front counter and finally she checks, only to find 3 boxes

I ask for 4 boxes (it's cheap at only 1.50 squids for half a K and i'm too lazy to keep coming into the city every 4 or so weeks when i need to re-stock) but she tells me she only has three and isn't sure whether she can sell me that many. Now, if this were behind the counter drugs then i'd understand, but this is fuckin' sugar we're talking about here. Seriously, for fucks sake, how dumb can one person be?!

She goes back shop to check with the fuckin' pharmacist whether she can sell me all three!!! eventually the fool sells me them, but only after about 10 minutes of time wasting, the stupid wench.

Now for something completely different: my computer is going really slow and is rather annoying me.

P.s. Anyone who hasn't heard "Relationship of command" by At the Drive-in is living a seriously depraved life.

Moving on...

I got a new battery for my BF callipers this morning from the hardware store. That tiny shop is such a closet of beauties. Some much i never realised they sold. It's like the kind of store where the guy buys the Chuckie doll from in "Child's Play". Scary.

Anyhoo, i tested my bf% today and since the callipers only do a 3-point test, i did it 5 times for an average:

1st: 15.7%
2nd: 15.2%
3rd: 16.3%
4th: 13.7%
5th: 15.7%

So i frst did an average of these and got 15.32%

I then got rid of my highest and lowest readings (to trya nd reduce the human error aspect) and got an average of the remaining three and got 15.53%

The average of these two is 15.425%

So i worked out that @ 209lbs with 15.4% bf i have 176.8lbs LBM and 32.2lbs of fat.

I *think* i also worked out that i'll be 192lbs when i hit 10% providing i don't lose any muscle.

Can someone ouble check my calculations and tell me if i'm right? I'd me much greatful.

Back day:

High row: 145k [319] - 7
150k [330] - 3

The first set i arsed up my working out and did 5k short :( I wondered why i was in the midst of breaking a PR... but alas.

T bar rows: 77.5k [170.5] - 6!

Well, it's only taken about 4 weks to progress by one rep lol.

60k - 10

T bars with an overhand grip: 45k - 8

Rear flye machine: 55k [121] - 5

Same as last week.

Kneeling shrugs: 60k [132] x2 - 12
60k x2 - 10

Two good sets, although i had to quickly adjust grip on the first set around rep 9.

I also actually did some direct bicep work today!:eek:

Of course, it lasted about 30 whole seconds lol.

Weeeeeeeeeeeee...I'm off to the fair tonight :D

One thing i forgot to menton is that i'm 209 in a depleted state.

If i spent 2-3 days carbing up i'd prolly hit @215, which would lower my bf% without me actually losing any fat at all, lol.

Just thought i'd mention.

Thoroughly enjoyable leg day.

Squats: 155k [341] - 7!
155k - 5

SLDL's: 165k [363] - 5!

Last rep was hard work.

Leg press: 257.5k [566.5] - 12!

Woooooo.

260k [572] - 8!

Hooooo.

Seated calf: 80k - 10
95k [209] - 4!

Standing (hack) calf: 190k [418] - 10!

The problem with this set up is that to get into position, i have to lift the weight up off the pins, then stand onto the wooden fixture one foot at a time. This means 190k of weight put onto one leg at a time which is quite dodgy to say the least. Getting down off the platform is also quite dangerous. I gotta be careful.

Started work again on Monday. Early mornings are back :( I was really shattered last night too. I ended up falling asleep at 7pm. Hopefully i'll adjust soon.

BB Bench: 100k [220] - 5 + 2
100k - 4

I was so sure that i was doing the 6th and 7th reps myself on the first set, which would have been a personal best, but afterwards my training partner told me he helped with them. Gutter or what?!

Weighted idps: 41.25k [90.75] - 6!

Woo Hoo.

Albeit, i am at a lighter weight, but like i've said in previous entries, i judge my dipping progression by reps i do with the weight around my waist. If i kept body weight as a variable too then i'd be complicating things and i'd soon confuse myself. Besides, i prefer it this way.

Decline machine press: 242.5k [533.5] - 9

Well that equals a PB.

Incline flyes: 36k [79.2] x2 - 6 + 1

I got 6 last week too. I shouldn't have tried for the seventh rep.

Side laterals: 14k [30.8] x2 - 9!
14k x2 - 6 dropped 10k x2 - 4

CGBP: 82.5k [181.5] - 7!
85k [187] - 4!

Great session overall. Today marks my exact 5th week done dieting and i've yet to have a cheat with food. Quite pleased with myself. I've also yet to have a refeed/carb up, and i've noticed myself eating more fruit lately, probably in a subconscious bid to get more sugar tastes. I was originally gonna plan one for saturday, but now my sister, who has lived in sheffield for 3 years, has moved back home the family has decided to go out for a meal on friday night. So, a curry and lager refeed it is  lmao.

I'm really looking forward to it actually. I may use the remainder of the night to squeeze in a few cheats too. Maybe. Maybe not...

The_Chicken_Daddy
07-04-2002, 12:39 PM
My squats have progressed by about 1 rep a week (sometimes 2 reps) every week since abut jannuary. After i hit 6 reps with a weight i up it by 2.5kg. Simple. Effective.

I got to the gym earlier than usual so i started up with some heavy standing calf raises.

High row: 150k [330] - 6 Eq PB.
152.5k [335.5] - 4!

T bar rows: 78.75k [173.25] - 4!
60k [132] - 11 Nice speed/high rep set.

T bars with OH grip: 55k - 8

This is prolly a PB for an overhand grip btw. Who knows. I can't be arsed to check through my log. Ah well.

Kneeling shrugs: 60k [132] x2 - 14!
60k x2 - 8

I may try and get 20 reps with this weight just for fun lol. I doubt i've got the strength or grip strength to do the 70k's for a decent set just yet.

I also did some more bicep work this week. It's becoming a habbit lol. Only did a set of DB curls with the 24k's for about 6 reps on eacha rm and then dropped to the 22k's for about 4 reps each arm. Then i was done.

I got my curry tomorrow night! :D I'm well looking forward to it.
Because i usually weigh in on saturdays i weighed in this morning cause the retention of glycogen and water from friday night will obscure my weight. If you're wondering why i didn;t do it friday morning it's cause i train thursday nights (ie tonight) and the carb up post train makes me heavier and thus, obscures my weight. I like to keep all varibales static.

Anyhoo...

I ate 4 large plates of curry, naan bread, rice, popadoms, tikka masala, jalfraizi, madrass, a bowl of ice cream, 3 choc-ices and a postman pat ice lolly. And chased them down with about 5 pints of lager and 2 pints of John Smiths when i got to my local. I had 2 can of carling in the house when i got home too. And some chocolate cake.

lol.

It wasn't a refeed. I just said it was a joke.

I don't do refeeds regularly. I just carb up when i feel the need to. I went almost 6 full weeks without one too, so my cravings have been kept well underwraps.

My sister has moved home and she got a 1/2 for her degree so it was a semi-celebration. She's actually trotted off down London with her boyfriend to see the new Andrew Lloyd Webbber musical in the West End. Bombay dreams i think it's called, and tickets are like gold dust right now.

Really? The day after a pig out huh? With me more or less I feel like a big fat slob after I pig out. To be honest my muscles feel very very full. I mean they feel almost pumped up in a sense because of the muscle glycogen replenishment. But then I realize how fat my gut feels and just get pissed.:rolleyes:

Yeah sure, Mick. If i can, i'll try and get some non-posing pics of myself up too. Like ones when i'm out drinking or whatever. Just so you can see what i look like.

Squats: 157.5k [346.5] - 5

Now this is a PB, but on my first rep i went down too quick and needed assistance on getting back up, and cause of this i was toow eary on my remaining reps so didn't go down as far. I was quite disappointed. I amde up for it on my second set though.

157.5k [346.5] - 5!

A much better set overall and one i'm more proud to say is my PB. I'm gonna keep this weight for a while (at least 3 weeks) and i'm gonna work on depth for all reps. I think i'll just ignore the whole PB idea/bolding until then too or else i may start to feel disheartend, which, when cutting and feeling generally shitty at the best of times, isn't something i particularly want.

SLDL's: 165k [363] - 6!

Woo Ha! Great set. Prolly up weight and drop reps to 4 next week.

Leg press: 260k [572] - 12!

A relatively easy set actually. Quite strange.

I've been reading this weekend, things by Arthur Jones and Bry Haycock and i'm starting to debate in my head the relevance of doing a second set on an exercise. I may make a thread in training about it and get some opinions. I'm just not sure what to actually ask. I'lls ee what i can come up with.

I went to the gym today and did some GPP work.

Did 3 sets of 12 reps on squats with 10k a side.

Little rest between. 30 seconds at the most.

3 sets of SLDL's for 15 reps a piece with 15k a side.

Some light calf work.

A set of 15 rep extentions and 15 rep leg curls.

And i finished up with 3 minutes on the bike. <--- Pathetic, I know, but i was in no mood to get all sweaty and i was starting to perspire.

Chest/tris are tomorrow.

I love Arthur's stuff, but I think if you read some of his later writings you will find he altered his stance a bit. Not quite so hardline. I think he realized 1 set was not best for all trainees (he probably knew that all along). I think 2 sets or more are best for just about everything, although I must admit that I only perform one set of squats and deads on my leg days.

Haycock actually recommends that if you can do an extra set you should. More volume (within reason) is better, although really it's a bit more complicated than that. One, however, has to be wary of too much CNS fatigue. So, for example, one can cut the extra sets short when rep cadence slows down(This was recommended by another intelligent poster on the HST forums, not Haycock himself). It's worked quite well for me. As one approahces his rep maxes, he'll generally have to reduce the volume, though. Haycock doesn't include this in general recommendations of HST, because HST is essentially 'dumbed down.' The micro-cycles were shortened because most bodybuilders can't deal with not going to failure, he advocates only one set becauce if he states more sets are better, people will end up taking that to extremes. Even as simplified as HST is, there are all sorts of people that are like "I'm gonna do HST, but I'm gonna go to failure at every workout." Retarded sh*t like that. There have been several fairly length threads on this at the HST forums, with Haycock recommending doing as many sets as needed until you feel a sort of tearing/kneaded sensation in the muscle.

I know exactly what you mean about dumbfuckwits going to failure and beyond on programs designed to stop short of failure, Zac. Which is one of the reasons i told Micky not to mix HST with his progression principles (not like that anyway) cause if he's pshing himself for one more rep to achieve progression then he's gonna be selling himself short in the long run. Stuff like that.

Great push workout today. You wouldn't realise i was cutting these days!

BB Bench: 100k [220] - 6 + 1
102.5k [225.5] - 3! + 1

Ok, i've officially dropped my bench reps down to the 4-6 region for now. I feel better shifting heavier weights :D

Weighted dips: 42.5k [93.5] - 4.5!

Couldn;t lockout on last rep. I was pushing like kerazee for what felt like an hour but it just wouldn't budge. I was pissed, but pleased with the progression.

Decline machine press: 242.5k [533.5] - 6 + 2 forced + 3 neg

lol. After the dips i knew i was fucked, so i just took the piss for this set and did the forced and neagtives. Nasty pasty.:evillaugh

Incline DB flyes: 36k [79.2] x2 - 6

Same as last week, again equalling my bold.

Side laterals: 14k [30.8] x2 - 10!
14k x2 - 4 (followed by some partials, not many though).

This is great. I never thought side laterals were a strong point, but since dropping the overhead work the strength on these has rocketed. I'm right pleased.

CGBP: 85k [187] - 5! + 2

Ace. I was gonna do another set, but since my pressing and dips progressed this week i didn't see the point :)

"I'm walkin' on sunshine...whoa..."

And so on and so forth.

Good job man. I'm very impressed with your squatting. I think I used to be a heavier squatter than you but it seems like you've caught up and past me.

I thought you would have progressed more on bench, but I guess you are cutting and it's great that you are maintaining, and still progressing on most of your lifts. Excellent CGBP btw...I may try these some day... :)

Nice strength Robboe.

Keep it up its great that youre still progressing even while youre cutting. Strength on BB bench is fantastic. How are your delts responding to the drop in OH presses, or is it too soon to notice?

They're good so far, but a few more weeks are necessary for a proper assessment.

On wednesday afternoon i went in and did a really quick 20 minute GPP workout for chest and tris.

At the same time, my auntie was giving birth to the newest member of the family, and a brand new cousin for moi :) It wasn't all shits and giggles though, since she went into labour on Monday evening!

There were also complications afterwards with the placenta and she needed surgery. She's good now though, and the bairn is a little waxer :D

I went training heavy today:

High row: 152.5k [335.5] - 5!
152.5k - 4

T bar rows: 78.75k [173.25] - 4 (EQ PB)
60k - 7

haha, i got 11 with this weight last week. I really did seem to rush into it for some reason.

OH T bar: 60k - 7

Defintely a PB with this grip, but it's not something i'm gonna bold. Seems more like cyber-masturbation then anything.

Wide grip chins (On the squat rack): 5

My wide grip anything really sucks. I wanna try and get it up a tad. I use the actual support bar. It's a square grip and makes me really hardcore  haha.

Rear flye machine: 55k [121] - 6

Kneeling shrugs: 70k [154] x2 - 6!
70k x2 - 4

Grip, more than anything else, is the limiting factor here. Each week i'll try and add one more rep as per usual and hopefully these will aid in helping my grip strength.

And that was that. I went and shaved my head post train lol. Very refreshing. My mother hates it, and now me for doing it.

Ah well...

Nice back strength Rob. I still cant get over how strong you are on those damn kneeling shrugs. Still amazes me how your grip holds 150 lbs. DBs. My grip was hurting with the 110s.:rolleyes:

Oh, I forgot to mention, your article was quite good. There was a bunch of stuff I disagree with, but quite good.

And no, just fancied a bit of a change. It'll be back to normal length within 3 weeks knowing my hair.

Fran, you beef, i tried for 40 freakin' minutes to get through to you today from work. It was the perfect opportunity cause the boss on my table was at dinner and the dude next to me had a half day! You gimp!

I ended up phoning Cloughfeatures instead.

Oops, I used a bit of hyperbole. I said 'a bunch of stuff' when really it was just one or two points, one very minor. We've discussed all of these previously, I think, so I won't explain--unless you want me too:

Generally, for the natural weight lifter, 4 days a week in the gym should be the maximum.

And to some extent what follows this.

Also:

Weighing in every few days is actually a bad idea in my opinion. Water retention and fluctuations in intramuscular/liver glycogen storage can obscure weight and can be disillusioning.

Still, for the average beginner who working out too frequently and with too high a volume, it's probably better to not confuse things with answering q's with 'It depends.'

Out of curiosity, what would you have said?

Just what I've said before. I think the concept of overtraining has been overstated. Think of it this way. If someone trained a different exercise, for one set, on each day of the week would he become overtrained? Say it was:
M: calf raises
T: bicep curls
W: tricep pushdowns
TH: leg extensions
F: leg curl
Sat: chest fly
Sun: pullover

Even if each of these sets were to failure, do you honestly think this individual would be overtrained after a week? Two weeks? Ever? I don't. Yet, this is 7 days a week. This is admittedly a bit of an artificial example, but I think it proves a point. Certainly, squatting to failure seven days a week would lead to problems. I'm just saying the relationship of volume, intensity, and frequency isn't quite as simple as 'the hit each bodypart once a week, don't train more than 3-4 days a week.' OF course, I DO think that's generally very solid advice. I just know, from personal experience, that training 9 times a week has not lead to overtraining for me--though my overall time in the gym is still only 4-5 hours. Of course, if you tell beginners this they'll probably try to 'out-Arnold' Arnold and never leave the gym, so the above would probably be the worst thing to tell someone just starting out.

As for the weighing thing, I think weighing oneself every day is a good idea, for the very reason you think it is not. Due to fluntuations in hydration, etc one's unlikely to get a reliable result if he weights himself once a week. What if that day, he ate more sodium(without realizing it) and is retaining more water than normal. If you weigh yourself everyday, though, you can throw out any figures that are obviously flawed.

That's just my opinion, though. Again, I thought it was a very well good article.

Yeah, i was expecting you to say that. I was expecting at least someone to point that out after reading my article in fact. I tried to cover my ass by writing "generally" before the sentence :) There always seems to be exceptions to rules. And i don't like telling people to do just one type of training or whatever. It's much trial and error, as you very well know and advocate.

Yeah i know what you're saying. But i think weighing in everyday starts to touch up being chronic. Just look at monstart. He's such the perfectionist he makes himself feel bad when thigns don;t seem to be adding up. I've told him repeatedly to reduce weighing in frequency but he rarely seems to listen.

Yeah I do tend to obsess about my weight a lot I think. Not too smart haha. Oh well its not too big of a deal. I tend to make a much bigger deal on here than I do in real life. I rarely stress about cheating on my diet / my weight, etc.

I'm still laughing at "ay chigs".

And i'm not sure about a wish, but i defintely think we could start a campfire if required.

I went to the gym last night and did some pulling GPP and 10 minutes on the tready and 5 on the bike. I can;t believe how sweaty i was  My conditioning is quite poor right now.

Yeah, it was my gum. I always chew gum when i go out. Not too sure why though, but i've always done it, so there you go. And yes, i have 32 teeth.

And fran, you were so offside. Typical of italians that. Must have been judged by world cup 2002 officials...

LEGS!

squats: 157.5k [346.5] - 4
157.5k [346.5] - 6!

I'm keeping this weight until my depth is more reasonable. Hence, why my first set was only 4 reps. I stopped short cause i felt like my 4th rep wasn't up to scratch.

Second set was much better though and i pushed it.

SLDLs: 167.5k [368.5] - 4!
167.5k - 2

Leg press: 262.5k [577.5] - 8! Dropped 230k [506] - 6

Finished up with some calf work and probably the most effort for abs that i've done in a long while.

As far as weight loss goes, this is the crack: Last week i weighed in 2 days early cause i went for a curry and knew it would make the weigh in obscured. I weighed in 14st 11lbs [207lbs] then, and i weighed in again on the sunday after the friday night curry at 15st 1lb [211]. This week i went drinking on friday and i'm 14st 10.5lbs [206.5] as of this morning. No doubt i'm still holding some glycogen and water from the alcofrol which leads me to the question - should i reduce cals a tad, or just keep things static until say tuesday or thursday and weigh in then to see what's happening. I'll prolly keep doing the short GPP sessions this week too if i can make time for it, so that's a bit more activity.

Any opinions?

Oh, i had my first sunbed today in a long while. Time to make my white bits brown

Forgot to mention, the dude in my gym who benches 7 plates a side and military presses 3 plates a side was back in today and my training partner spotted him on CGBP.

He did 90k.

Each side.

That's 200 kilos.

That's 440lbs.

That's Kerazee.

So we got speaking to him. And it turns out he holds the commonwealth bench press record. He said it was 275k i think, which is a 605lb BP. Madness.

Anyway, he's called Mark Higgins, so if anyone can find out some stuff about his previous contests i'd love to see them. He really is a big lad. Short, but prolly wider than his height.

Incidentally, he also thinks westside is totally shite. Which, in an Irish accent is said: "shoyt" haha :D Made me laugh anyway.

Also, until today he's hasn't trained in 7 weeks cause he pulled a muscle or ruptured a tendon in his hand. He comes back and does 440 CGBP no problem for 4 reps for 3 sets. No assistance required. That is mental.
