LOL - I have actually picked up wearing flip flops this summer. So much so that I will even workout in them. The only thing I haven't done with them is squat.

Ha, i've been guilty of that at times as well. Even including rack pulls at the Y.

Not bad, Rugby was definitely a poor choice for me as that was the 3rd injury to that knee. Im finally getting back to square one with it, and then I began having back issues. Ive had a bit of an injury bug since I moved to KC. Things gotta begin looking up soon *knock on wood*
Hows your season going?
ZenMonkey
10-16-2008, 01:14 PM
Its not. Last season I incurred a sprained ankle and wrist, 1 broken rib, and a seperated shoulder. I was playing tighthead prop, whats your position? That game is too rough for me even though there is something to be said for knocking the crap outta someone. I am now training to compete in the oly lifts. Literally just began a serious split with a great coach yesterday.
I think I had the same injury bug as you... I hope I am cured too. Knock on wood!

I began as a loosehead prop, but with my height, and the fact that our other lock is 6'6" and a former member of the Welsh natl. team, I moved to lock (4) as he and I could better leverage a shorter, more stout front 3. My injury came when one of the flankers slipped in the mud during a scrum and put his shoulder full force from the side into my knee which was driving forward. Shifted my patella about 6" to the right and hurt like a bastard till it popped back in and destroyed my left vastus medialis in the process.

:eek:That sounds absoultely horrible. The closes I get to that is going into a ruck at full tilt and someone kneeing me in my quad. It felt like the knee when through the muscle and hit the bone. I limped for about a week.
It sounds like your team is very conscious about their players and the physics of the scrum, whcih is fantastic. I was the biggest guy on the team at 5'10'' and 220. Sad.
I hope your knee gets back to full force... you ruggers are resilient

We were quite fortunate to have 2 fantastic individual players from overseas (one, the aforementioned welsh national, the other a onetime member of New Zealands under-19 Sevens team, this kid had more jukes than Barry Sanders)
We were also blessed with our coach who had been at West Point coaching rugby for 8 years before coming to us (he was transferred to Ft. Leavenworth, and is now in Iraq as a Lt. Col.) The man was a complete student of the game, having gone to dozens of clinics in both Europe and the South Pacific to better improve his coaching.
We had some athletic freaks on our team, but quite a few stoners/drunks who IMO brought the level of play down. We were easily the most physical team in our playing area. Most teams would go to uncontested scrums as they got their **** handed to them by the tight 5, but were usually better than our speedsters (9-15). That and our kicking game was atrocious

limiting calories my friend...nothing more nothing less
I still drink 2-3 times per week, and eat out when I choose, I just found my maintenance level of calories (in my case 3800ish) and I try to keep it 1000 kcals below that...not the fastest or most dramatic weight loss, just very simple (READ: NON F'ING COMPLICATED) steady progress. I know there are better ways to lose weight faster, but seriously this was easier than falling off a log, just takes ALOT of patience

yeah it was about a 3-4" lockout, but I liked holding that much weight in a neutral grip (very reminiscent of alot of football drills), it felt good. Im quite sure you couldve done it Reko. You are a better bencher than I.
Well, we have everything necessary to do that at 1-0-7...
645 though, I think most I've ever held was 450 lol.

Various MMA Drills w/ Kettlebells and CLubbells... If anyone is truly interested I will list them all out
Followed by 5 2min. rounds of Muay Thai Sparring. Then did 1.5 hrs of BJJ tech work
Hadn't done any BJJ in about 4 years, forgot how much I missed it and MAN was I rusty... Probably didnt help that I had a Black Belt and a Brown Belt kicking my ass the whole time. Primary focus was on initial takedowns and fighting from the top mount/guard position.
Moral of the story: Don't ask those guys to show you the best way to land an omoplata....its a very easy way to watch a 150lb. man make a 300+ lb. man cry profusely

This shirt was a bad idea all around, it was about 3" too narrow in the chest plate along side of being closed back, with an INSANELY high groove (~1" above nipple level). The tightness caused SEVERE discomfort in my armpits and I couldnt tuck for anything at all due to the cut of the shirt (luckily it wasnt mine). Also Im not a huge fan at all of closed back shirts, it must have been quite a sight having 2 grown men wedge me into that thing...

For those of you who don't know...
Ive been having some severe back issues over the last year or so, and It's finally come to a head for me.
Im truly sick of my back hurting all the time...
I get it fixed, its great for a month or so, then it gets injured again, then I get it fixed, then its great for a month or so, then it gets fixed, etc. etc.
Im really not too sure as to where I go from here, other than I know that it only gets hurt when I Squat or Dealift really heavy, and the doc says its not a disc issue. My solution (although Im not saying its right) is Bench only. I truly hate benching and am not a fan but after the countless injuries Ive endured, it seems to be my best option.
Ive spent about 2 weeks now debating on this topic in my own mind, and I feel pretty decent about my choice...
My training split is going to look something like this:
Monday (light lower):
-Main Movement: 4-5 x 12-20
-Followed by a plethora of more BB oriented leg/back acc work, and a ****load of abs
Tuesday
Light GPP (most likely @ a commercial facility)
Will also incorporate Plyo's, Flexibility, and speed work
Wednesday ME Upper
Same as before, Westside style ME Bench Day
Thursday
Heavy GPP (read: Heavy Prowler/Sled)
some flexibility/mobility work.
Friday or Saturday
ME Overhead work (military/push press/Axle press/ etc.)
Light Bench work (preferrably DB's)
Heavy amounts of upper acc. work.
Sunday
Light GPP (again most likely at a commercial facility)
Will also incorporate Plyo's, Flexibility, and speed work
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I expect I'll probably lose quite a bit of weight doing this, coupled with good diet choices (will still be hitting the khan though). So my apologies to Rhodes and Ben, but I dont think I couldve made it into Rhodestown, but now at least I have a good excuse lol.
Current weight: 302
Desired: 270
Im going to get this all going Monday 01/05/09, since the doc told me to take a few weeks off to recover.
Who knows, it may be fun (I bet Rhodestown would be the MOST fun though)...

Bud, ya gotta do what is best for health and happiness. Besides benchers need some love too...
I'm heading back down in weight as well so I can fit back in my gear for Big Iron, haha. One request though - come bench with Mark, Jim, Kevin and I on Wednesday mornings. We need to biggest group together on Wednesday for spotting/boards etc.
I too plan on alot more GPP work and dynamic work on off days. I think we could come up with some sick medleys and circuits to help with this especially with all the fun toys we have in the gym now.

Well tonight was my first lifting session of the new regimen...and I must say I was not pleased...
Ben and Reko had a great night, they will do well at the Big Iron meet.
I on the other hand did a bunch of BB movements that isolated my legs and took my low back out of the equation. On these off days I wont list weights, as its really irrelevant other than just to stroke my own ego, and I could really give a **** less, as long as Im getting some quality work in.
Warmed up with sprint intervals on the track (12 laps = 1 mile) I walked 2 laps, then sprinted 2 laps, repeated 8 times for a total of 16 laps or 1.33 miles, Im really looking to see this improve as the improved GPP wouldnt hurt at all...
Hack Squat 4 x 10
HS Leg Curl 6 x 12
Leg Ext. 6 x 12
Upright seated leg press 4 x 20
Seated Calf Raise 4 x 25
Swiss ball abs (w/ 20lb KB) 3 x 25
A big thank you to Reko and Ben, their kind words and inspiration are helping get me through this $hitty time in my life as far as injuries go. Im sure it will get better, and I will begin to enjoy Bench only (as well as scouring vin & travis' logs for more info from two masters)
Finished up with a big shake and some leftover brisket, instead of my usual post workout McD's or Taco Hell...

2 tbsp peanut butter
2 tbsp. Wheat Germ
1 cup rolled oats

I think it's just a matter of time, patience, and smart rehab & training. There are lots of people with back injuries that continue competing. Olympic weighlifter Norb Schemansky had two back surgeries in the 1950s, back when "back surgery" meant being cut from stem to stern and lag bolts run through your bones. He went on to medal in two more Olympic games and got stronger and stronger. You'll be fine. It will just take some time.

This might be the best thing to happen right now. Rhodes shut it down at the end of the summer and now his leg isn't numb. Just taking your time, rehabing and coming back stronger is a lot better in the long run. Making that choice just blows. Or you can have it made for you like me.

Epic quote is epic...
Been thinking about this one all day:
1/14/2009 1:04:49 PM - Jared
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Jim,
I was wondering when you were growing up as a teenager if you were always strong and stuff, or did you just work really hard like Matt Rhodes. Do you remeber your numbers when you were around 17 and 18 years old?
Thanks
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bone skinny for most of my life. I would say that few people could/would know obsession for training as I knew it growing up. I also doubt anyone worked harder than me in high school.
So I wasn't always strong. I just willed myself to be better and stronger. I have no idea my numbers at that age.
As for my genetics:
All I was told in high school was how I could never play football in college. Too small, too weak, too slow, too short. I don't have the genetics.
Now all the ****s on the internet say that the only reason why I squatted 1000 or played footbal is because of my good genetics.
So here's what I want both groups to do. Get together, make up your minds and go **** yourselves.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
How's that for an answer?,
Jim Wendler

Finished the day with football drills with a bunch of the high school kids and college guys training there. Felt good to take some pass sets against some speedy youngsters. Threw one kid who just signed with Northwestern as a DE on his ass in pass sets (the Old man still has it). Matt smoked my **** on outside rush tho, but I stonewalled him when he came inside...................... God I miss football

My 3 board
up to 365 x 5 and 405 for 2 misses
Tire Sled Rows
I was very tired (not sleeping well, not in a scary Chad Aichs way, but just tired from traveling) and it was very cold this morning at 5am. Everyone seemed to be in a funk today as there were ugly misses all across the board. It was a great group this morning otherwise.
Didn't do too much in the way of acc. work, I needed a morning off in terms of that as I usually keep my acc. volume VERY HIGH.
I need some Chips and Salsa and a nap...
I think Mark and Sean were the only ones doing well this morning.
