My mom found a copy of my diet in my room and decided to call a doctor and ask if I was eating too much protein. My current diet has around 170-180g of protein. I'm 15 years old, 5'7, 135 pounds. I came home and she told me the doctor said I should have 55-60g of protein. I know that if I change it up that lifting would become a waste of time. What should I do?

Don't listen to your doctor.

Find some studies or good articles and tell your mom to read them. The only way your parents will understand is if you educate them.

lifting will never be wasted. hindered maybe, but not wasted.

remember, doctors dont want you to be healthy. They lose customers and money that way. Tell mom that.

55-60g of protein is the daily recommended value I think. At my maintenance calories it would be difficult to not exceed that if I tried (and yes, I realize I'm quite a bit heavier than you are, but my point is that 60g of protein is absurdly low).

Just keep eating 180g.

Doctors have no idea about nutrition. They still use the food pyramid for ****'s sake. Tell your mother to mind her own business and light her bed on fire.

Dang, I realize you're 15 and all but why's your mom snoopin around in your room? Or was your diet out in plain site? Anyways, your doctor is an idiot. Show your mom this thread.

Clinical Dietitians are more knowledgeable in nutrition than doctors.

That said, if your mom will not listen to you, or any good piece of literature you present her, PM me and I will give you my number.

Me and mom can have a little chat.

the doc might have meant get at least that much protein. I doubt he was setting a cap on it. Chances are your mom has tried a low-carb, high protein diet anyway, right?

P.S. some people get angry/ jealous when they see your diet and hard work paying off. Just something we have to deal with. (not your mom, but others)

The worst thing that can happen when you eat too much protein is you get fat.

Very doubtful.

The American Dietetic Association recomends approximately 60 grams protein/day for the average male.

He was likely going off this figure.

However unlikely, protein can be a contributor to the formation of fatty acids under the right circumstances.

Tell your mom that engaging in resistance training doubles your requirement for protein. Your Dr gave you a # for someone who is done growing, tell her that too.

A doctor is not a dietician or a fitness specialist.

At one time I was 170 lbs and 8% bf. My doctor told me to lose 10 lbs as I'm sitting on the table in my underwear, shredded to the bone. I asked him if I should cut off an arm.
