Allright so I'm deciding to start up an online journal just to see how my progression goes. A little about myself: I'm 15 years old 5'6 and 165 pounds. I'm going to be pushing myself to about 180 pounds or so. My overall goal for now at least is going to be 315 bench press at 15 or an early 16 year old. It's going to be tough i know, but it's really time to push it. My current max out is 225. Well that's pretty much it for right now, anyone can post in here whenever.. i hope to see some helpful criticism. Thanks all.

ALLRIGHT LET'S DO THIS! LEEEROOOOOOOY MMMMMM JENKINS!!!! :ninja:

It was freekin' so damn hot today. Ginny T drenched aswell as shirt, i haven't sweat that much since I did tons of cardio two years ago. Anyway.

BACK

Rows:
100 x 12
135 x 8
150 x 6
175 x 4
180 x 3
100 x 12

Deadlifts: (Suck badly).

135 x 5
140 x 5
185 x 5
225 x 5
255 x 2

I think my deadlift technique is fairly poor -- considering the numbers.

Pullups:
5 x 1

Tbar Rows:
90 x 8
135 x 6

Bentover Rows:
135 x 5

Lat Pull Downs:
100 x 12
135 x 8
150 x 6
180 x 6

Still feelin' pretty good. Legs tomorrow, wahoo xD.

PS: Also, thinking about slowing down bulk... gaining to much weight... ass feels huge today... Weight: 167 Lbs .. gunna have to make up for it tomorrow hittin the squats babeh!

Today wasn't one of my best. Weight room was closed at school, so I had to workout at home. I was suppose to do squats, but didn't even want to attempt.

5/1/08

Hang Clean:

Bar x 8
95 x 5
115 x 5
135 x 5
155 x 1
165 ~ Miss -- So damn close!
165 ~ Miss -- Almost fell forward :(
95 x 6

Shoulder Press:

bar x 8
95 x 5
115 x 5
125 x 3

Curl:
95 x 6

Was a pretty pathetic workout, tomorrow hopefully will be much better.

fooz

Today was awesome, I didn't hit the squats, cuz I just had to do bench. I'll do squats on Monday.

5/2/08

Bench Press:
115 x 5
135 x 5
155 x 1
175 x 1
185 x 1 (Flew Up)
205 x 1 (Easy)
225 x 1 (Not very hard)
245 x 0 ~ Maybe in a few weeks.
115 x 15

Tricep Close Grip Pulldowns:
60 x 12
70 x 8
80 x 6

Skull Crushers:
45 x 12
45 x 12
65 x 4 (not very good at these)

Close Grip BP:
95 x 12
115 x 3 (Grip was messed)
115 x 3 ~ Wrists were F'd up.

I was trying out the JM press... asking around the gym for some advice and no one had any idea. I asked the football coach and had no idea what a "JM" Press was. I also felt pretty good today becuase, after hitting the 225, then grabbing the weights for the 245, the coach was like... "Who's doing this" I said i was ... and he just smiled and kinda laughed. He was like "You did that" and i said yeah... he then didn't say anything. That just kinda made my day.

PS: Just downed 3 double BK stackers, w/ some fries and Dr. Pepper. Yumm!

I only did deadlifts today, becuase i had to work out at home.. very limited when doing excercises.

205 x 2
255 x 2
275 x 1

135 x 5
175 x 5 PR + 2 Reps =]

I wanted three of 185, couldn't do it :(

Did a ton of pull downs, two sets of skull crushers - one set of curls 95 x 6.

two sets of H-Rolls and a set of shoulder press.

H-rolls were pretty hard . haha

Now today was a totally different story. I got a chance to work out in my schools gym during phys ed. I had so much energy... i have no idea why.

EDIT: Probably due to the fact of 10 ladies riding bikes watching me.. :omg:

5/8/08

Bench Press:

115 x 5
135 x 5
155 x 5
175 x 5
185 x 1
205 x 3 + 2 Reps
225 x 2 + 1 Rep
235 x 2 + 10 lbs
255 x 1 ~ Second rep was assisted. + 30 lbs
275 x 0 ~ Not yet.
115 x 15

Not bad for in school 25 minute work-out.

Today was pretty crazy. I worked out in pysh ed again. Just deadlifts tho. At around 7 i went to the YMCA with my friend and pretty much hit everything in sight. I'm whiped... the only PR i got today was my deadlift.

5/9/08
Deadlifts:
135 x 5
225 x 3
275 x 1
315 x 1 ( @ the YMCA) PR + 15 :) :)

(In School)
135 x 5
205 x 3
225 x 3
275 x 1

Rows:
(Don't care about the small weight)
180 x 5

Did a set of hang cleans. Hit some bench press, skull crushers, pull downs, DB Press, Curls, Preacher Curls, Chest Flys. That's pretty much it. Tired as hell and going to go take a shower.

EDIT: The 315 was 100% raw, no wrist wraps or belt.

Looking good there.

Ditch the gloves and get some real shorts haha!

Maybe take more time setting up for the DL's and watch your form a bit, try to keep a strong arch in your back or at least keep it flat. Otherwise great for a 15yo. I wish I would have started lifting when I was that young. But remember to be careful your not fully grown yet so do kill yourself yet.

Great efforts keep it up.

littleman19
05-15-2008, 07:58 PM
you have some pretty good strength, but ****ty form with the deadlift. that was more of a straight-leg deadlift than a conventional deadlift. when you started, the first thing that went up was your butt so you the only thing you were using to lift the weight was you back and it look like you were straining it a bit. you don't want a bad back at age 15... i learned the hard way ;P arch you back a lot more by focusing on keeping your chest up. your legs should lock up around the same time as you lock the weight out. with good form, you easily have 340-360lb in you. you might even want to try mixing in sumo stance to see if you like that any better.

Dirk Pitt
05-16-2008, 01:30 AM
^^^ What he said for sure. Your ass goes way up at the start, you want to use your legs to drive at the start of the lift, try to push your heels through the floor. Also, when you lower the weight you just bend over at the back, which is not good. You should bend your knees as you bring the weight back down. The motion down should be the reverse of the motion up. Edit: I have found that for me personally I do better when I position the bar over the balls of my feet instead of right at my shins.

Here are a few vids that I used to correct my form.

Deadlift:

All of this was easy, except the last set of T-bar rows. My new, good form on the deadlift helped so much. 225 5x5 was really easy. I've skimmed through your journal and you have some serious strength for your age. I saw the videos of you deadlifting on the 2nd page and I'd highly recommend you check out the videos of the elitefts guys pulling on youtube. Those will be your best resources for any powerlifting lift. When pulling with a conventional stance, you don't want to drag the bar against your shins. Keep it a couple of inches infront of you so when you pull, you want to, essentially, be pulling in a straight line. The biggest thing I saw is you're pretty much doing a SLDL - You're straightening your legs, then pulling instead of doing both in one fluid motion. I'd take a full session next time you deadlift, and just pull with 135 lbs and tape them all. In between your sets, review your form and look at what you can adjust. Your progress has been great so far, though. You have a lot of potential! Good luck.

So tomorrow will be bench day... a kid in my class is "challenging" me on the 185 press, for most reps. I plan on warming up bar 10 reps, 135 5 reps then going straight to it. I hope to hit about 5 reps... supposively he claims he does 5+... but i doubt it ..

I don't understand how i can do 185 3 times, but 205 twice? I should be able to do at least 4 or 5, of 185. It's not a big deal... next wednesday, gunna change it up a bit, add chest flys and what not.

Ran about a mile... it was hot..

Dirk Pitt
05-28-2008, 04:19 PM
Were you warmed up enough on 185? For me it usually takes 2-3 sets before I am really warmed up on bench, my second set is usually the hardest for me, so you might try warming up more if you want to do lots of reps at 185.

Indifference
05-28-2008, 05:02 PM
I agree with dirk. I find if I want to do volume (usually never im fat and lazy) I have to do a lot of warming up or 3-5 is where things get heavy. I hear you on the hot part man, I swear just walking around down here right now is like swimming, theres so much water in the air im sure someone could drown if they werent careful. Solid day bro.

Just cruisin your journal here, bro. Lookin huge for 15, damn. I was about 115 lbs at your age and the same height, lol. Can you believe that ****? Anyway, Deads are looking solid and I couldn't help but laugh pretty heartily at some of your comments, especially about ****tin the pants while Squatting and DLing, lol. Gotta make sure you're empty before the big lifts, dude. I don't think your DL form looks all that different from mine actually. If you bring your ass up fast, then that's just the way you do it. Don't sweat it too much, but dude, definitely toss those gloves in the trash and get some chalk. They will just hold you back. As far as the bench goes, just take it a little slower for sure. Do a progression something like 45, 95, 145, 165, 185, 205, etc. A 50 lb leap from 135 to 185 is pretty significant if your body is not prepared.

Dirk, Indifference: Even when i warm up, i can only do a max of 185 x 3, that's the most i've ever done.. it's wierd.. maybe i'll add in a set of 165 before hand and see how it goes.

Kiaran: Thanks a lot man, you were probably just like my bro, an inch taller then me but weighs like 125 lbs. And yeah, i'm not using those gloves anymore, gotta get the grip up. Anything over 3 reps for me, is like doing damn cardio. So that could be my problem.

Do you guys think that it's unrealistic to get my deadlift up to 405, in three weeks? 320, wasn't really that hard...340 i got off the ground half way...

Indifference
05-29-2008, 05:10 PM
Unless your form is really holding you back, then I dont think itll happen man. Id say 3 months with some strong ass posterior work *COULD* happen, but not 3 weeks. But that doesnt mean you shouldnt bust your ass and try!

Kiaran
05-29-2008, 05:54 PM
from 320 to 405 in three weeks? I doubt it. Six to eight weeks is a little more possible, but it all depends on how fast you're adapting. At your age with your hormones, I suppose anything is possible. Give it a shot, man. I'd say try 345 this week, 375 next week and 405 the week after if it's really gonna happen. Better be getting a lot of rest too.

Keith
05-29-2008, 06:02 PM
Yeah, I think 405 is unrealistic in 3 weeks from 320. That's like a 30 lb PR each week until then. Don't get so caught up in pulling "4 plates". Just shoot for consistent PR's each week.

Weight: 173.5 (It's the water)

Squats:
135 x 10
225 x 8
315 x 5 -- Light, I always groan though.. No Belt.
405 x 0 - Was pretty heavy, not gunna lie... went down but then arched forward... not a good deal. After letting the spotter's do their job, i saw all these white dots. I assumed it was from the lack of oxygen to my brain. Gotta' breathe!

Leg press, 3 pps, 4 pps 10 reps each
Set of abs, w/ 25 lbs
Ran... pretty hot again -- cardio sux!

Football season is coming along soon, I really wanna start center for our team.. yeah Varsity. I've got some pushing power allright, harder then the 250+ guys. I think if i get to 180, and bust my ass, there can be a decent chance. If not i'll just start JV, no biggie.

315x5 to 405x1 is a huge jump. I'd throw in 365x3 before going for 405. Ever done 20 reppers with your 5-10 rep max? You'll see white dots at about the 15th rep and it happens everytime! Great strength, man. Keep it up.

Damn strong legs, bro. I give you props on attempting the 405. That thing is a load. Definitely ramp the weight up a little slower next time and you'll probably nail it. Cool deal with trying to play center for your Varsity team as well. Centers are beastly; can't imagine playing that position.

I'm not one to give too much advice since my bench sucks, but others on this board that know what they're talking about have said to keep your shoulderblades pulled together and your chest pushed up to minimize shoulder injury. You don't want to mess up your shoulder, especially at 15, those injuries seem to last and last.

Keith

At 15 years old, that really isn't a good sign. It may be wise to start taking something for the joints especially considering you're strength training. Glucosamine and microlactin seem to work best. I take glucosamine now and haven't had any issues or pain with my joints. As killxswitch said, keep them pulled back and very tight. Since they're already hurting, definitely ice them everyday, especially after training. Great squatting, BTW. You definitely have some strength for your age!

bar x 10, 135 x 10, 205 x 8 , 245 x 6 ( I think i was GMing a bit)

I jumped on the bench and did a few reps of 205, my shoulder really bothers me when i go heavy. Anyone have any suggestions for this? Ice... tylenol... i'd assume. Anything else?

Have you tried changing your grip on your bench, ie wider or more narrow? I find my shoulders start to get cranky with my ring finger on the ring so I moved to pinky on the ring and no more problems.

Nice work btw, keep it man!

Kill: My shoulders have been ****ed up since I've started playing baseball... but wierdly enough it's my left shoulder, not my throwing one.. Thanks for the advice though, i'll make sure i'm doing correct form.

Keith: Yeah, i know man it's not a good thing. I'll definately try out some of that stuff, and see if it helps, thank you. And thank you for the compliments on the squats.

Jed: Jed, shut up, my mohawk is better :)

Rob: I actually, just moved to ring finger on the ring. I use to go ALOT narrower (I know why my triceps are pretty big :) ) I'll try and go a bit more wider, and see how it goes. thanks for the advice man.

Strong: Allright bro, I think i'll skip speed day tomorrow then. And yeah, i'll check out that stuff, i think my dad has that stuff in the cabinents, thanks.

I had a ton of pain in my left shoulder while benching bro. Hopefully some things I learned while rehabbing/physical therapy will help you. First off, Ice it after squatting, Ice it after squatting, Ice it after squatting. I cant say that enough. Squatting can put a heavy strain on your biceps tendon which will really irritate you doing bench presses and make weight feel a bit unstable. Next is your grip/form. Im not sure how tall you are, but im 6 1 and my wingspan is pretty big. I used to do pinky on ring and like you used my triceps for most of the press. Bad idea. That will piss the shoulder off as well. I now press with middle finger on ring and although I cant press as much yet, I have full use of my shoulder back and no pain. Also try squatting with your pink under the bar. I know its awkward but it WILL take stress off the shoulder joint and the bicep tendon in there. Thats all I can think of at the moment. If I remember any more ill be sure to post it.

No worries on that 225 bench, bro. Would that have been a PR for you? I'll bet it's psychological and you just gotta focus. Deadlift is on the move too. Steady as it goes, bro. 245x6 ATF squats is pretty damnimpressive as well, man. **** being "strong for your age", dude, you're just strong period.

Kiaran
06-24-2008, 04:42 PM
Oh that's just fantastic. You have much to learn, young one. When rage builds to the point of outburst via a punch, always choose wisely what you drive your fist through - wallboard (between the studs) is very satisfying. Steering columns, chairs, and certain people's faces also do well. Metal doors/walls, glass of any type, hard furniture and anything that generally is heavy enough to kill someone are poor choices. Better get that thing checked out. Also we're not gonna let you use this an excuse to not lift. Tape up and get back in there :whip:

Keith
06-24-2008, 05:48 PM
Do you have wraps or just a tensor bandage or whatever? Don't push through the pain whatever you do.

fooz
06-24-2008, 05:48 PM
I'll probably bandage it up. Trying to close my hand all the way gives me pain..

fooz
06-24-2008, 05:49 PM
Maybe if i try and rest the bar on the bottom of my palms, wrists back, might work?

Keith
06-24-2008, 05:58 PM
Well that's how you would hold it if you were using a suicide grip. I love this grip and prefer it over the regular grip with thumb around. Try it out, but if closing your hand hurts, you'll probably run into problems. If so, back off and see a doc.

fooz
06-24-2008, 07:26 PM
Ok keith, thanks. I decided to get the straight bar and put 25's on each side and try to curl it. It went pretty well.. alot more difficult then before ... but it wasn't TO bad..

Kiaran
06-24-2008, 08:55 PM
Honestly, I'd go see a doc anyway. You don't want to have broken something and then it heals up stupid. Then you'll be that guy in 10 years that's all "yeah, when i was 15 I broke my hand and didn't get it checked out, now I can't blah because of blah...."

Weight: 164

Bench:
100 x 12 , stopped after this hand was bothering me..

Chest Fly:
100 x 10, 120 x 10, 140 x 8 , Last few reps of 140, hand was hurtin

Reverse Pec Deck?:
30 x 15, 50 x 15

Done...hand felt good on the chest flys, but sucked on the bench.. I don't think i broke the knuckle.. it's probably just sprained. On the palm of my hand under the pinky is pretty swollen, and black and blue. Might see a doctor, if it doesn't go down.

Keith
06-25-2008, 09:09 PM
100 lbs... pfffffft. Oh wait, you're injured, too. I forgot. Would you go see a doc already! "Spraining" a knuckle doesn't sound too common if you ask me. If it's black and blue and swollen, I'm going to say it's definitely broken.

That sucks about your hand. I learned early that metal and other hard objects are not good to punch in anger. Kiaran is very right about drywall, just don't hit a stud, those fall into the hard object category. I also like to punch hollow core doors, you can go all the way through them if you hit them hard enough. Pulling your hand back out can be a bitch though :). Way to tough it out and work out with the ****ed up hand but I would go see a doctor just to make sure.

Yep, punching steel doors isnt the best idea. Your better suited to hit the wall, or a hollow door, pillow, someones face, yourself, the couch, a screen door (these are actually the best), an open window with a screen on it, or anything else that would be satisfying to break.

I had a temper in my past that used to get away from me from time to time, until I hit a counter and broke my 5th metacarple (the bone that typically rests on a desk while you are writing). That is typically referred to as a boxers fracture. Any how, I waited two weeks after the initial break to go see a doc..they had to re-break it before casting it...which hurt more than the initial break. You should really go see a doc if you think that you may have some thing like that...it will only get worse.

Oh, BTW-being in a cast for 2 months and then not being able to lift for another 4 months after has been THE best anger management course ever.

lifting with the cast isnt the problem, er at least wasnt for me. It was once the cast was off, I couldnt bend my wrist very much for a good two weeks and then after that, my hand still hurt where the break was, especially doing curls/bench type stuff.

Take it easy with the hand buddy.
