I'm currently working up some new contest ideas but anything you (the membership) would like to see as a sponsored contest/challenge, post it in this thread! :)

I was hoping you would allow my (fun) triathlon...
Overhead Squats - 155 lbs for max reps
Cleans - 185 lbs, max reps in 2 minutes (partitioned any way you want)
Bag Run - 1 mile run with a X lb bag on your back for time
X = .25BW + 25 lbs

Haha that's a ridiculous contest Justin. Could you have picked any lifts that you train more often than those (sans bag run, though you train it more than most)?

I have done a total of one bag run in my entire life.
I have trained OHS for 2 weeks, and probably done a total of about 35 sets in my entire life (I'm guessing I've done about 2000 sets of bench press). My shoulders and my quads are both serious weak points.
I think cleans are a good exercise to both test strength and conditioning when done for 3 minutes. Also, compared to Oly lifters, it's not really a strength of mine.
To answer your question, I think I would do well in deadlifts, muscle-ups (I can do ~8 straight), any contest with sit-ups, just about any kind of cardio event, rope climbs, pull-ups, anything with jump rope... I think this contest does a relatively decent job testing overall strength & conditioning, tests your whole body to some extent, and I think these are 3 things that not a lot of people do here, so it's unlikely that anyone will be a complete stud. Also, I tried to make it even out for tall/short people, and for heavy/light people.
The one thing I would consider changing is the fact that we have two events that Oly Lifters are really solid at from the start. I would have put muscle-ups in place of OHS, but I thought that would be biasing the contest towards me.
So...

lets do something different, like most reps with 225 on zerchers or something.
Chubrock

I see both the OHS and the cleans as being more about technique and balance than strength. If we want to have a contest like that, that's cool, but overall I disagree that those two lifts are best for something strength related.

I'm down for any type of contest.
But lets not turn this into a giant strength, form, power, endurance arguement like last time. Lets just pick a contest and whoever wants to do it can do it. It doesn't matter who wins, so who cares? Lets just have a fun contest.

A contest that I have been thinking about putting down is a big three increase. Everyone could have their maxes down by the end of June. Whoever has the greatest increase in their total by the end of the year, wins. You could have total weight and % increase winners. Most of the people on here hit the big three in their routines, so it would have a wide base to work with.
This would be geared for newer lifters, since they will most likely see the greatest increase in a six month period, than guys with more experience, but whoever makes the best gains wins. You don't have to be able to move a certain amount of weight (225 for reps, BW for reps), or perform a newer exercise, just be able to max on the big three in order to compete.
The reason for the end of June deadline for current maxes is so people don't post ridiculous numbers in December, just to win. You could still lie about your current maxes, but a lot of people have journals already, so it might not be too bad. Videos would be a must for end of the year maxes, to verify and to just to show the work you put in.
There would have to be more rules than what I posted, this is just an initial thought. Use of belts, suits, determining a good lift.....

Good discussion so far. Keep it coming.
I'm particularly interested in contests that are not *just* about strength competitions.
Hell, I've even got a haiku contest on my list.
ANything reasonable is fair game. Doesn't just have to be a performance oriented comp.

I think a "body transformation" contest would be good. The pics section is full of progress pics and transformations.
The downside of the contest as I see it would be length of the competition. It would have to be at least a 6 month thing for significant results. As well as an HONEST before picture. It would suck for some newbie to post 5 month old pictures after already acheiving progress.
This could benefit ALN though. Since most people here use their products. Some before and afters could be added to the website.

I like this one. However I'd vote for a little shorter duration contest....something in the 3-4 month range.

I agree it should be a short amount of time, or else people will lose interest in it. But as we all know making any significant change, or transformation, takes a long time. I would imagine in 3 months someone could lose 25 lbs, or gain 20(if applied). Not too sure how much this would "wow" anybody though.

Very. I wish it would have started three weeks ago, I just added 55 pounds to my CF total the other day. How would you do it? I still like my idea of who can add the most weight to their total in a certain time frame.

not sure how I would work it. I just thought of the idea and thought I'd post it. No option makes everyone happy, but here are some ideas:
- CF total / bodyweight
- CF total, in weight categories
- CF total improvement
Personally, I'm a fan of CF total in different weight classes...keep it simple and go <200 and >= 200.

- CF total / bodyweight This could be interesting
- CF total, in weight categoriesThis would make the contest very quick, unless you gave so much time to improve, in that case
- CF total improvementI would just go with this. That way, you really open up the contest to everyone who plans on getting stronger. If you just go with the current total, you'll get someone with some big numbers and not many will enter after seeing they aren't going to win anyway.

You're right about not being able to make everyone happy, but I think how much you improve over a certain time frame would be appealing to more people. You don't limit who enters based on their numbers and it really gives everyone a decent shot at winning. If you just want a quick contest with people punching in their numbers, then the weight classes is the way to go. I'm in either way.

Right now, the only contest I'd do anything halfway respectable with would have to include kettlebells, but I recognize if we had a kettlebell contest, I'd probably be the only contestant...
Here are ideas I like (first two already mentioned):
*1 mile 100lb bag/object/dummy carry (without straps would make this a lot more interesting to me) for time
*double bodyweight squat contest for reps
*most reps with 225 squat & pull-ups in 15 minutes (can break it up in as many or as few sets as you'd like ala "EDT")

Would this be set up as a cumulative total, i.e. your BW and added weight as a combined total or simply how much weight you can add?
Some ideas for events:
Max OHSQ or Max number of reps with %BW overhead squat.
Most weight snatched (or power snatched maybe) with one arm.
Highest box jump.
Most BW Squats (e.g. I would squat with 200lbs)
Funniest joke? (this could be decided by a set of judges or poll)
Coolest skill, like a party trick. (again decided by a set of judges or poll)
Longest hold of X amount of weight.
OR
hold 405lbs for X seconds. (could be more, this is a lot of weight for me but probably not a lot of other members on the board :P) would only need to be lifted from high rack pull so simply a test of grip strength.
OR
Largest amount of weight held for 30 seconds.

I might try this one before the weather gets too bad. It would be a lot of fun.
We could easily loosen the rules and call it a "carry, drag, kick, put, or push 100lbs a mile for time" contest. You could use a rock, sandbag, loaded barbell, log, 2 45s + dime duct taped together, or whatever as long as the weight was 100lbs.
Without video, this would not have any meaning for people who didn't actually attempt it however.

I know this thread started quite some time ago, but I have discovered it after a couple of recent entries. What about something simple? Girls can do this one too. A test of strength, endurance and willpower. Whoever can hold a plank hold for the longest. I think something like this could even up the competition between men and women. It could become an epic challenge! And one to sure leave many people screaming at the end! Bonus: you don't need access to a gym or any other equipment.

How long do you reckon you can plank for? Back in my rowing days I used to manage 2-3min without too much stress. I tried it recently and although I'm undoubtedly stronger now I barely managed 30seconds! I went to boxing club trials a couple of months ago - they were a lot of guys grunting and screaming at the end of the planks test!

I decided to begin doing them to challenge myself when I first saw these on WBB. I also thought they would hugely benefit me by strengthening my core and help me in the long term to fight off my existing back pain. I have done both of the photos below. The wall planks I can only seem to hold for around 1 minute before my feet slip off the wall. The decline planks I have been working on lately. Although my decline is not quite as great as that shown in picture 1 as I have my arms on a slim aerobic step up box . Maybe I might take that box away now. On my last attempt, I got 5 minutes and 15 seconds. I was in a world of pain and was grunting and screaming at the end! And when I went to take a drink from my water bottle, my shoulders cramped! NASTY!!! Problem now is, I'm gonna want to better myself each time. Beating 5:15sec will be horrendous! :evillaugh:
