I have my first meet in 2 days. I've been training for it for about 9 weeks. I'll be squatting and deadlifting in a suit (metal v-type squatter) and benching raw (couldnt afford a bench shirt at the time). I'm pretty damn excited I must say. I'm lifting at 181lbs, sub-junior. I am opening with a 345 squat, 205 bench, 385 deadlift. My previous bests are 385 squat, 230 bench, 405 deadlift, so i'm hoping to hit a couple PR's on sunday. I would love to hit a 410 squat, 240 bench, 440 deadlift (1090 total) so I can qualify for nationals but i'm not really all that caught up in the numbers. I'm just going to get experience, set the bar for myself and then continue progressing.

Rusty will be competing aswell so good luck to you too man. I'll see ya down there.

Checklist
squat suit
knee wraps
wrist wraps
belt
singlet
chalk
chuck's
music
snacks

Anything else you guys think I should bring? Or any advice for a beginner? I am really getting excited the more and more I think about it. :hello:

Do you wear a belt? I also use Bio-freeze or Icey hot prior to warmups. If you can, take a cooler so you have gatorade/powerade for between lifts. Good luck and have fun.

-yea, bring money or a checkbook as you will probably have to buy a card to lift in the meet. thye are usually good for a year after that or something.

-attend the rules meeting. every fed is a little different and there may have been somethign you overlooked or they may give you a little more leeway in something else.

-don't get too pumped that you forget about the commands.

-bring someone who can handle you (ie help with suit, hand offs, turning in your next lifts etc).

-Have fun!!!!!

You still sick? Are you bringing your camera? I'll record your lifts as well as Sean's if you want. How about some ammonia caps lol?

Bring plenty to drink.

Do you use baby powder when you deadlift? If not, I'd try it.

I actually already have my membership card, but thanks for reminding me. I would have completely forgot about it. I'm going to be showing up about 20-30 mins before weigh ins just so I can get settled and make sure i'm good to go and dont miss anything.

good luck man. kick some ass.

Thanks alot dude

Yep i'm still sick but it's not too bad anymore. I should be alright by sunday. Yes, bring your camera. My dad will be there filming but he tends to watch with his own eyes which means the camera will be fixed on the guy's head in front of him.

Bring plenty to drink.

Do you use baby powder when you deadlift? If not, I'd try it.

Thanks, i'll bring some baby powder and give it a go. Just on the shins right? or all the way up the thighs too?

Good luck. It's in Cambridge, right?

Yep. You should come check it out if your around. Thanks

Thanks for all the responses so far guys. Now that I got a checklist i'm not so nervous because I know i'll be prepared.

Shins and thighs. For me, since my lockout sucks, the thighs are the most important spot for the powder. Just make sure not to get it on your hands.

I usually just get someone else to put it on me. Get them to rub it in a bit with the side of the bottle then when you stand up or walk around make sure you don't step in it. I always have a wet towel to step on before I get on the platform to do my deadlifts just to make sure my feet don't slip.

Good luck Detard!

On your snacks, try to avoid sugar until you get to the deadlift, when it will give you a nice boost. Any earlier and you risk spiking and crashing. Stick with complex carbs between squat and bench, something like oatmeal, mashed sweet potatoes, etc. The little babyfood containers of sweet potatoes are pretty convenient. A recovery drink immediately after squat and bench would be good too. Also don't go too crazy with protein intake, your body wont have time to benefit much.

All that being said, having fun is the most important thing. Good luck!

sounds good. you both need to be wearing backwards muscle milk hats, shirts that say something rediculous about lifting weights, and have ammonia packs on your belt.

Maybe i'll bring some oatmeal packs that I can just mix with water and down them. I was thinking about drinking an energy drink before my first squat, and before my first deadlift. Thoughts? The reason would be is that I found that sometimes I would lose my concentration in the gym so I found that getting caffeine into me really helped out.

I always load up on caffeine on meet days. I usually have a caffeine pill about an hour before lifting starts, an energy drink near the end of my squat warmups, another caffeine pill while I'm warming up for bench, and an energy drink before deadlifts.

For breakfast I ate a grilled cheese sandwich, heart stopper (bako shake), and some sliced turkey with mustard. Lets hope it goes well today!

SICK!!! It was a TON of fun. I couldnt wipe the smile from my face I was so excited. I placed 3rd in the 82.5kg open weight class (weighed in at 179.8) with a total of 450kg. I only hit a PR on the deadlift. Just wasnt my day with the bench.

Squat
346.5 - 3 whites easy
376 - 2 whites (folded over in the hole but managed to grind it out)
385 - 3 reds (folded again and couldnt grind it out)

Bench
205 - 3 whites easy
225 - 3 reds (touched too low and had to fight to bring it in)
225 - 3 reds (no gas left)

Deadlift
385 - 2 whites, easy
407.5 - 3 whites
418 - 3 reds (I thought this was good but they said I hitched it)

All in all, an AWESOME day. Clint Harwood (rusty's coach) acted as my coach and helped me out with everything. Thanks a million to him for helping me get prepared for all my attempts, warmups...etc. Also thanks to the guy who lent me a pair of high socks. I was unaware that you cant pull in regular socks so I had to borrow a pair. This guy saved me!

Vids to come soon

Chris Rodgers

Great job Detard! That's funny everyone has to wear the socks. Probably not a bad idea with all the bloody shins.

Rusty

I might aswell throw my **** in here too.

The day went really well. I went to sleep last night at 248lbs and weighed in at 240lbs this morning so I made the 110Kg class.

Squat
405 - 3 whites
515 - 2 whites I think, might have been 3
550 - went up easily, got called for depth though. Once Dan throws up the video, I'll watch it 389032750284 times and curse all the judges for calling me high when I wasn't.

Bench
315 - 3 whites
345 - called for bar drop
345 - 2 whites

Deadlift
520 - 3 whites
550 - 2 or 3 whites
584 - got it up, but was called for ramping

All in all it was a great first meet.

There should be some good videos from Dan or Keith

A huge thanks to Clint for coming down to help, and to Dan's dad for recording the lifts. The spotters were great too.

584 deadlift: *red*

Damn camera had very little memory so I couldn't have Dan's lifts on there too, but luckily his Dad got them all.

This was the first meet I've seen and I gotta say it makes me want to get myself into a meet in the near future.

Rusty's coach was up there with one of the largest men I've ever seen. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was the dude in the blue shirt, right?

Both of you guys did great! All of it was awesome to see live.

Good job Rusty. That is a damn shame they red-lighted that squat. It looks like you broke from a front camera angle, which is usually the worst angle to go by. This leads me to believe it was deep enough for whites. I would have red-lighted both of your last deadlift attempts(yours and Detards), but they were both minor hitches. Strength is definitely there for those weights.

Why did you open so light in the squat? Nervous?

Thanks Chris.

The squat was a little dissapointing with the depth call, but it went up easily, so I'm happy. I opened so light just to be on the safe side. I also had no idea what it would be like to lift infront of a crowd.

I also got my qualifying total for nationals next year, which was my primary goal with this meet.
