I have a cheap belt that I got at Dick's Sporting Goods. Using weights that I've lifted without the belt with no problems I get a burning sensation in my abs just below the belt (The belt isn't fully tight). I'm wondering if I had a decent belt if I would have this problem.

When you bear down do you have any protrusions poking out of your abdomen? Does this happen any other time? Where is it exactly below your belt?

No protusions and it doesn't happen without the belt.

Start with the basics - look and see if the belt is made out of or treated with something you have an allergy to.

it could be your belt is moving around on you and chafing your stomach a little

Do you have red marks? When I use a belt the bottom edge kinda bites into my belly sometimes and leaves a bit long red mark.

Ha! You caught me man. I forgot chalk last week and even used straps
I think it's from about to pop a hernia. I have had the same the sensation hurts (burns) Only with the belt on also. Only thing I can say adjust the position of the belt. Keep the abs tight when lifting, just wearing a belt tight, you still need to concentrate on the core muscles.

Same thing happened to me and the doc said it was a strained abdominal. I did no lower body work for ~2 weeks and it seemed much better, but it still comes and goes.
Unless there is a pinch mark (looks like a hickey) then I would doubt your belt has anything to do with it.
