Klotz's log: wannabebig edition.

Some background: I started lifting in first year university, just doing the standard bench/curls/leg press routine. Although I was really in to it, I lacked knowledge. Then in third year I found a good forum that gave me the tools I needed to get ox-like strength. 2007 I really started adding weight to my main lifts, and I even competed in a strongman contest at the end of the summer. After that I focused on powerlifting for an online bet, and got my lifts up to 480 dead/275 bench/405 squat for an 1160 total at 20 years old and about 11 times that in pounds.

2008 I kind of slacked off, I worked on my ATG squat and a failed attempt at Olympic lifting, and trained with fellow WBB member RedSpikeyThing. I improved my flexibility a fair amount, but didn't get much stronger. Now school is done and I'm back in Toronto. I currently train at a crappy tennis club gym, following a routine based on "make it up on the bike ride to the gym."

However, yesterday was my first training session with Team Barbarian, a local strongman crew that trains out of this guy's garage. Hopefully I can get stronger and faster and compete in a few competitions this summer.

MAY 17. 3 PM.

Training with the Team Barbarian strongman crew.

Biked up there, went to the house, and only a girl and a skinny guy were there, so we hung out in the basement gym until the team leader whose house it was showed up. In the meantime some huge guys came in, and two guys who were at that contest that I did.

The guy came and told us to do a warmup consisting of various types of planks, and then a circuit involving a light trap bar deadlift, some Glute Ham Raises, and a 200 lb atlas stone. Stones are hard but fun.

Then we went outside and set up farmers (two handles that you load weight on and walk with), a prowler type thing (a weighted sled that you push), a 600 lb tire, and a steel log. We did another warmup involving prancing around like popinjays, then split up into groups. First I did the farmers/prowler medley, where you do a 200 lb/hand farmer's one way, and then push the ~200 lb prowler back. I like the prowler. My callous didn't give me trouble on the farmers. Did a few circuits.

Next up was the tire. I got a few lessons on form which made it a bit easier, but I still suck at it. Did about four sets of three flips, with a few failures here and there.

On the log I worked up to a PR of 170, and I learned the proper way to clean it. After that we ripped some phone books and I went to play soccer. Then we met up for dinner.

MAY 20 2008. 9 PM. 217 LB.

Front squat

45x5
135x5
205x3
275x3 way heavier than it should be
275x2
275x1 could have done more.
The bar doesn't swivel and it makes it hard.

Jerks (to see if I could)
45x5
95x4
95x3
95x3
95x3

Played a round of medicine ball catch

Pull ups
5 N
5 C
5 P

My gym workouts have been pretty weak lately, as you can see. I've been feeling pretty unmotivated, and my elbow's been bothering me.

Good luck with the strongman stuff...seems to be a great route to build upon natural strength.

LOL, nice title.

This should be an interesting journal to follow. Good luck with your strongman goals.

Saturday May 24.
Strongman training. Went to the guy's house, and he was late again because of a car thing. We warmed up with the dynamic stretching, trap bar, and 200 lb atlas stone.

Eventually we made it to the garage and I did Axle clean and press. I got up to 180 and then on 200 dropped the clean on my thigh. It'll be brown tomorrow! I also pushed a prowler around a bit. My legs failed pushing it up a slight incline, which is a weird feeling.

Then we took turns flipping the 600 lb tire. I was much better at it this week.

Then we did a 250 lb atlas stone. I got it up to the platform twice, with a failed attempt in the middle. If I can get it off the ground it's not much of a problem, I just have to find the right grip.

I don't really like these. I'll stick to squatting.

Best advice I could give on the stones when picking them is to get right up to it, and then go down and do a round back deadlift with it, but start pulling right as you grab it and not try to fiddle with it to get your palcement. I usually have my inner shin/calves touching the larger ones or close on the smaller ones.

Im not a stone master by any means and haven't seen you load them or anything but with the pick a lot of times people, myself included, just over think it. Just my 2 cents on it. But yes, stones are fun :)

Thanks for the advice. I definitely spend a lot of time thinking and fumbling with hand positioning.

May 29. 8:50 PM.

Overhead squats (heels on 5s)
45x3
45x3
65x4
65x4
85x3
85x4
85x3.5 Lost balance at bottom

Whatever it is that keeps the bar stable at the top is definately getting stronger.

Snatch grip deficit deadlifts-more of a deficit than last time
135x4
205x3
255x3
305x3
305x0-0-1

About 30 pullups of various varieties spread over several sets (5 max per set) and some box jumps. Now I know what happens if you fail at box jumps, something I've always wondered.

cool, nice to see the journal over here too. Lemme know if/when I can train with you guys!
PS nice front squatting. Is that a PR?

Email the guy first you can find him on the team barbarian website.

I did 275x3 a few weeks back, my all time best is 285 which was a while ago.

MAY 31 2008. 3 PM. 215 lb. 18.6% body fat apparently.

Strongman training. Started out with the warmups, and things got started slowly because there were so many people. Got close to closing the 2, closer than some much stronger guys.

Did trap bar deadlift up to 425x2. I like the trap bar.
Outside, I was flipping the 600 lb tire with ease, and I flipped the 800lber once, which was very hard. Also did zercher walks with a yoke frame (maybe 300 lb), which killed the legs, and some farmers (200) and axle c&p. Weak showing on my part.

Met up with some people from the internet and snuck in the back door of a commercial gym. It was horrible! Machines everywhere, pop music blaring, a guy wearing a back support belt with suspenders while curling.

Not reaching parallel on a lot of these. I think I need to work on hip mobility more directly.

Last weekend my workout was too crappy to post but it involved some squats and stuff, and during the week I went to the park and did some dips and chins.

June 21 2008. 2:25 PM.

The gym replaced their new squat rack with a newer squat rack, which is huge, like biggest squat rack I've ever seen. Not as many pullup bars on top though, but I no longer hit the walls, and I can press inside.

Front Squats (mostly ATG)

nice front squats...the few times I've done them they almost turn into zerchers :(

Klotz

Yeah there was a bit of zercher slippage on those.

June 29 2008. 7:45 PM.

635x1 Managed to hold it for a few seconds. I could do more if I could fit more weight on the bar.
495x1 Held it for as long as I could (minus a few seconds, the pussy factor), maybe 20 sec?
