If cardio is so conflicting with weight lifting why are their absolutely ripped professional swimmers and runners?

They get ripped like defined, but not ripped like HUGE... At least that's the difference I've noticed.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they just get toned/defined really good from all the cardio. Their muscles aren't big like a powerlifter though.

I don't know about who you have seen but they have much more muscle than most weight lifting wannabe's I have seen.

what the hell are you talking about?

cardio is not at all against lifting... never has been or will be. your preconieved notion is common among these boards but has no warrant.

also "ripped" refers to bodyfat levels... not mass.

Thank you for equalizing the level of deductive reasoning on this board as it becomes more like bb.com *commits suicide* :micro:

You're missing the point, people are not saying that cardio conflicts with weight lifting, just that for some people it conflicts with bulking. Others do cardio when bulking and eat a little extra to account for the extra calories burned.
Cardio is used by all lifters when cutting to get ripped.

The muscle comes from lifting weights. If you go back 40-50 years ago before they lifted weights, runners were twigs. Low bodyfat levels will make you look a lot bigger than you actually are (and top 0.001% genetics doesn't hurt, if you're talking about the guys in the upcoming Olympics). If you look at long distance runners today though, they have very little muscle.

I did 0 cardio (and 0 ab work) on my last cut, lost a bunch of fat and negligible muscle.

Besides, you're probably talking about the sprinters, which more readily use fast twich fiber muscles, the same kind used in weight lifting.

You can do no cardio and be in better shape than someone who does a ton of cardio. All it boils down to is calories. Cardio converts fast twitch to slow twitch fibers something which weightlifters dont want. So why do cardio when you can have the same bodyfat with better muscle fiber make-up.

NO!!! "Shape" is the wrong word, use leaner.

Generally only SS cardio does that. There are many types of cardio

What does this mean? Better muscle fiber make-up?

while this seems true and I certainly agree many here do exactly as you say but the problem we all face while trying to help people here on the boards is stuff like this... the blind leading the blind. This happens all of the time and wouldn't be so bad if it was not begun by something that can be answered by a simple search of the forums here or the website. The information is easily accessible and we all agree to do it when we sign up for this forum. I understand that some of this is not common knowledge but people need to get off of their lazy asses and try and figure some basic **** out for themselves

Agreed, but what happens when the blind lead the blind? Now you have half of the members here failing because their routines and diet and cardio all suck. What do they do? They then blame WBB and leave, possibly causing ALN to lose money.. what's that old saying about one bad referral spreads faster than 5 good referrals.. or something like that.

Yeah, treating guys like as_holes is good for business. Thanks for showing me the way. What a joke!

so someone gets treated like an *********.. they can either suck it up and learn, or leave..

alot of the members on this board were once treated like that until they found the search button..

Guys, let's relax a bit here.

There are always going to be new members who don't know a lot of things. They will ask the same questions the many before them have. That is a big reason people join sites like this, to learn.

If you feel that you are tired of the questions and cannot answer constructively then please refrain from posting. Just go on to the next thread.

To address the original question, aerobic exercise precludes optimal hypertrophy because aerobic work elicits essentially the opposite adaptation by the muscles when compared to resistance training.

That said, you can still perform some aerobic work and get big and muscular, you will just not optimize your results.

Chris is right on. Do as little cardio work as possible to cut fat. If you absolutely are not losing and couldn't stand to take cals out of your diet, then start doing a little bit of cardio here and there. I'm talking 20 min, 2-3x/week, slow paced.

I've been lurking here for a few weeks but I have to chime in on this one. As a newb to resistance training (only a few months) I would prefer that incorrect or misleading statements be corrected by those who know better - vigorously if necessary.

That having been said, putting a positive spin on it can sometimes make a 'correction' more palatable, and therefore more likely to be read and understood.
