Tell him you bench 330...?

My dad just pretty much noticed how much bigger I got when I got back from college, and when he saw my dedication at home knew that it was a lot of work.

16... Ever hear the phrase "young and dumb and full of cu*"... lol. When I was your age my dad told me I should move out while I still knew everything because one day I'd be old and dumb like him. Ha-ha... My buddy punched his dad in the head during an argument - HUGE mistake!

I think we all go thru that phase with our dads. Nothing is ever good enough. It'll pass one day and you'll both look back and laugh.

You could take him to the gym and see if he can push 330 off his chest... I don't recommend trying to put your old man in his place but if it makes you smile...

Why can't you run a 7 minute mile?

I mean, your dad is being a dick for discounting your other accomplishments, but maybe he's looking out for your well-being. You're a heavy guy with poor cardiovascular fitness. The first thing that most parents worry about with their kids is that they live a long, healthy life.

good post, tofer. you and your dad both have valid points. why don't you just sit down and point that out to him if it's really a problem. i'm sure you guys can compromise.

Being Strong is good but its doesn't mean that your healthy. Seems like you would do well in HS football. You should really put your fitness before your strength right now.

Keep doing what you enjoy, theres a evidence to suggest that enjoying life is more important to life then being skinny and fit.

No one said anything about being skinny but I don't want any teen to have the misconception that lifting weight alone will make you fit and healthy. Its one thing to enjoy life but its another thing to find out at the age of 30 you have high blood pressure and other bad thing because from the age of 16-30 you found it cool to eat 6000 calories a day just to bench 500lbs. Health is more important than any bench press record. As I started earlier I think he would do good playing HS football.

How tall are you?

CrossFit
!

You are a strong dude, especially for being only 16. But, if you want to compete at a sport other than powerlifting (and, really, even including powerlifting), you will probably want to improve your cardio abilities. I would also say you should improve your cardio because it will probably improve the way you look (i.e. lose your gut) and it will also definitely be better for your health.

Seriously, give CrossFit a try for a couple months. It's addicting. Not a ton of people do it, but those that are into fitness (it seems you are) get hooked quick. Just go to crossfit.com and do the workout prescribed each day. Bust your ass and try to get good times.

your lifting some really good numbers. start doing running or jogging routines trust me you'll get between 6-7minute miles pretty quick. have your dad go to the gym with ya and let him see how "useless" you actually are.

Nobody needs to be fast. Or strong.

If you want my honest opinion, the OP's dad jealous that his 16 year old son is way stronger then he is.

My dads the same way, but he never brings up running or anything like that... maybe because come deer season I'm the MVP deer dragger.

You're dad may be a jerk but I think everyone should try to be somewhat healthy. If anything, you'll have a better quality life. Maybe your dad has a point. Not saying you need to have a six pack or be under 10% bodyfat but you should atleast get rid of the stomach. Don't do it for your dad, do it for yourself. Nothing but good things will come from you being in better shape. Confidence, better quality of life, health, athleticism etc. Just my advice.

Being not able to run a mile in seven minutes is not going to be end of the world, or does it mean you're unhealthy. I agree with WBBIRL. No dad should ever think of his son as fat and useless just b/c he can't run a mile in seven minutes.

I'm curious how your bench has gone up a hundred pounds in less than a year, but your deadlift stayed the same? Did you get hurt? As far as your dad, I agree with Tofer.

Dude, youre 16 and you are way stronger than me. Just because you cant run a 7min mile and have a gut doesnt mean youre a bad athlete. Heck, even I, and Im light, cant run that fast right now.

Haha Willie.

I think the sentiment on this board is you're in amazing shape if you are really strong, regardless of where your other abilities are.

I disagree. I think you should at least work towards improving your conditioning to a 7min mile. It will help even powerlifting in the long run if you work on it in a smart way (i.e. crossfit / gpp)

You are quite strong but perhaps you weigh too much..maybe your dad is watching out for your health like someone else said...i mean theres no point in weighing so much just to bench alot.

Just put as much dedication into cardio as you do with weights. You do need to shed a few lbs and football will help great regardless of how bad your team is. Of course you don't need to be fast but please think about your health over Powerlifting. One of the best ways Americans could cut down on health care cost is Prevention

The way you take care of your body now will effect you 10-15 years from now. Don't let anyone on this board tell you to forget about cardio. I'm sure none will volunteer to pay any of your medical bills later on in life. God forbid something arises medically that could have been prevented.

maybe your dad is right and you are fat and useless. do you ever help him around the house? do you just eat all his food and lay around playing video games all day? unless you are putting your strength to use, you are being useless to your dad. i'm not saying you do these things, but most 16 year old kids are fat and useless (I know I was).

and BTW, you should run off that gut. you should be healthy, not just strong.
