My goal is to compete in the Texas Strongman Classic in Fort Worth next February. Following that contest I am planning on competing in the Lonestar Classic event in Houston in April.

My current stats are as follows:

Weight - 290

Bench 1RM - 335
Push Press - 275 x 2
Squat 1RM - 525
Deadlift 1RM - 455

My goals are to get as strong as possible across the board and to beat the following numbers.

Bench - 405
Push Press - 275 x 10
Squat - 550
Deadlift - 600

I look forward to any help and insight you guys may have.

This was pretty easy. I kept the accessory stuff light because for now I only have 1 bar and didn't feel like changing weights.

Here is a quick vid of the garage. A buddy is going to weld some SM implements once I get him plans I found online. I am going to build some boxes and a platform and it should be good to go for now.

I was ready to try 525 but my 3yo had to go crap and my little one started getting pissed.

I just emailed the local promoter and it looks like my first strongman contest will be 4/18/09 at the Ronnie Coleman Classic. He is not going to do the February Contest.

If another contest pops up around here or within a reasonable driving distance I may give that a go too.

I found a scrap yard that sells the pipe I need to make an axle for .43/lb. I am going to go check that out sometime next week. I drove by a construction site and saw a tire laying down. The side wall is slashed so as soon as the boss gets back I should be able to get it. Its gonna be light, maybe 300lbs, 14-24 but I plan to use it for sledgehammer work and cardio work. I will also be getting a 23.5-25 tire soon as well to flip.

I got plans to build a yoke and farmers and my neighbor welds so hopefully that will be good to go by the end of the month. The only thing I need is some stones and a log. I am going to try and make the stones and more than likely I will buy the log from Pitbull Equipment.

Things are starting to take shape

Its been a while since I've squatted like this and I was beat by the end of the squats. The last rep was a bit high but for now I'll take it. I had planned to do the lunges with a 135lb BB but I was toasted so I grabbed the DBs. I noticed on the split squats my balance was very bad. I really need to work on the stabilizer muscles and balance.

Thanks for stopping by and the advice. I was pretty beat from the zerchers and push press earlier in the week so I was happy to get 505. I am going to really start working on heavy rows and trap work to try and get that deadlift to 600 and then 700.

haha, if it wasn't for Mike I'd still be doing BB splits and trying to get skinny instead of working on building what God gave me. Do you train with him? If so, tell him to bust his ass or he is going to make me come to SC to kick it :D

That's awesome. What did you major in? I'm in Petroleum Engineering now... but it's my first year in it, and I'm a transfer. Soo... nearly junior on credits, but nearly softmore in my credits transfered to the degree program. Sorta disappointing, but oh well.

I lift at the rec with the powerlifting club most of the time. That would be cool if you could come in on one of our big 3 days and lift in with us. We've got a few really strong dudes on the team, and a bunch trying to get strong (including me).

Well this is the first time I've really done bench in about 4 or 5 months and I tied my 1RM so thats cool. My chest and shoulders were feeling it after bench so I took it easy on the flies and crossovers. I really want to start getting heavy on the rows to help my deads so I went for it and man my back it toasted. One guy at the gym asked if I needed him to stand on the weights on the HS Rows. Silly little people  I topped everything off with a nice rack run of Hammer curls.

I am very sore from the squats so I had planned to take it easy but once I got there the bench was feeling good so I just went for it. Also, today is the first day that I have ever weighed 300lbs. I don't really know if I should be happy or sad about this.

OH Squats
135x5x3

kind used these as a warmup and tweaked something in my mid back

HB Oly Squats
225x10
275x8
315x5
365x3
405x3
225x20

I used a small seat to make sure I was getting depth. Man a narrow stance had my quads on fire. After the 20 set I was thinking about vomiting.

Leg Press
4pps x 10
5pps x 10
6pps x 8
7pps x 5
8pps x 5

I hadn't done these in a long time. After the 6 plates set I had to tot ake an extended break to try and not throw up. This pretty much happened after every set for the rest of the workout.

Leg Ext - 1 Giant Drop Set
150x10
130x5
110x5
90x5
70x5
50x10

Lying Leg Curls - 1 Giant Drop Set
150x10
130x5
110x5
90x5
70x5
50x10

I just ran thru these as fast as I could. I was fighting off the vomit the rest of the way. I got home and had to lay on the couch for 45 minutes before the need to vomit finally started to go away. My legs are cashed today.

Ok so I need some opinions on how to complete my back/deadlift workout I am doing tonight. I am going to finish the workout with the complex below to really pound out some trap development but I am trying to decide what I need to do before hand to can really help my deadlift total. Here are my thoughts. Thanks

1. Pullups - 3x10

2. Deadlift/Deadlift Variant - Heavy low volume

3. Bent Rows - Somewhat Heavy

4. Complex
A1) Power pull, snatch grip: 2 x 6 (no rest, move to A2)

A2) Power pull, clean grip: 2 x 6 (no rest, move to A3)

A3) Scapular retraction barbell row: 2 x 6

B) Power clean from blocks: 3 x 5

C) Overhead shrugs: 1 x 20

D) Snatch grip deadlift: 3 x 5

E) Snatch Cuban press: 1 x 20

Depending on where you weak may have a lot to do with what you need to do. Maybe some heavy rack pulls, heavy rows, and then pullups?

My main deadlift weakness is the inital pull about mid shin. My thought was to do the pullups as a warmup and then hit the dead work and rows followed by the trap complex. I think I will keep it lighter on the complex to test it out and not fry my CNS with all the pulling on one day.

Gable

Might need to add pulling from mats or something.. maybe 2-4" tall.. my low end is weak/slow too..

ss w/
A3) Scapular retraction barbell row: 135x6x2
- This was a bit too heavy but had my traps on fire

B) Hang Cleans : 135x5x3
- Too light but it was good to really work on form and explosion

C) Overhead shrugs: 95x20
- Too light and got a great pump in the traps

D) Snatch grip deadlift: 135x5x3
- Way too light but I could really feel these in my lats

E) Snatch Cuban press: 10's x 20
- May go to 15s but these burned

Comments
My lower back was tight from being a lazy ass so I kept the weights light and really focused on form. This workout will be one I do on a lighter volume day. There is no way this could be done after heavy deads.

Big o Boy
11-18-2008, 11:05 PM
that deadlift plan looks like a TON of volume. Maybe too much. On the pull-ups before hand, I usually do a light WG set (maybe 8-10 reps) to warm-up the rear delts and get the lats ready. 3x10 at your bodyweight sounds pretty taxing before the pulls.

Don't forget speed pulls/squatting, that helps your explosion off the bottom and may help you past that sticking point at shin level. Rack pulls are always great, ATF squats with a high bar, zerchers, squats with raised heels, pull-throughs, etc., should all help that lower back to yank weight off the floor.

My problem is the lock-out. Hopefully that helps, but take whatever works for ya. :)

Trap Bar Deadlift
Bench Press
Push Press
Pull up (max over body weight)
Plate Loaded Thick handled Dumbell Deadlift

All lifts are for max weight and raw, belts and wraps only.

4. DEADLIFT FOR MAX (Wessels Rule) - 60 SECOND TIME LIMIT (3 attempts for max weight) - suits allowed

5. WEIGHT TOSS: MAX HEIGHT. - 56lbs

Was it hard to put on solo?

Thanks man. Well my raw PR is 505 and I haven't really done deads in a few months so its hard to say. My guess would be about 50lbs right now. I think I could have gotten more if I had not run out of weight, maybe 550.

The suit was cool. It took me about 10 minutes to get it on. Once I put the straps up it was a struggle to get down to the bar. The straps really bruised my shoulders/pec area. I've got skinny ass legs so it wasn't that bad for me.

My last pull the bar was probably a good 6 inches out in front of me instead of dragging up the shins but I was able to get no problem once I hit mid shin height.

I had a great talk with MS today and he help clear some things up as far as how the nationals went. I was confused and this was a major factor in my lack of effort the last few weeks. I thought nationals was a contest that was in April which I knew for sure I would not be able to attend. This made me not really care to much if I qualified or not. He told me nationals is at the end of the year and hasn't been announced yet. So with this in mind I have refocused and have some specific goals set for this contest.

1. I am going to compete as a SHW for sure now (goal wight will be around 315 if possible). I am going to work on trying to get 4000+ calories in a day of quality food. I want to gain as much lbm and strength in the next 6 weeks as possible.

2. I am going to qualify for nationals.

3. I will set some specific goals for events after this weekend and I test some things out.

I am also going to be switching up my routine as follows

M- OH Press/Chest/Tricep Focus - I have been neglecting a lot of pressing and its showing in my lifts so I am going to just combine all pressing together with OH being the prime focus.

Tues - Abs/Foam Roll

Wed - Deadlift/Back Day. - I will be doing some high volume here since I respond well to this type of training.

Thurs - Abs/Foam Roll

Fri - Squat/GM Focus - I won't be doing these super heavy and if I feel its too much after deads I'll cap these workouts and put pressing in the middle

Sat - Events

So with all that...

Push Press
multiple warm up sets
260 x 6 in 30 seconds trying for 60 secs.

*MS was right, the first 5 were not bad but I ran out of gas here. I have to get this to at least 12 reps

Bench Press
225x5x3
* finshed off with 1 set of CGBP at 135x10 - tris were pumped :(

Various Crap
did some flyes, tricep work here, light and quick

**Main focus on this day moving forward will be building up the endurance in my triceps and shoulders.

More than 4000 dude.. the wings alone were a few thousand cals.. depending on the sauce.

Eat, and enjoy it dude.. you are working on adding strength to get ready for the contest.. just make sure to keep enough cardio/conditioning in the plan so you dont gas out too quick.

I only have a tire I got from a local spot. You looking for something in particular?

Deads
lots of early set
495x1 - straps down
525x1
545x1 - straps up - felt easy
585x0 - I got it off the floor to the knees fast and then exhaled and lost it. I tried to hitch it but no. I held it in my hands for a solid 30 seconds trying to lock it out
585x0 - was beat at this point. I think I have 600 for the contest

push press
260x5 - I was going for time and felt a tweek in my LB so I cut it off at 5

Metroflex on Plano was an awesome gym. If you live near there I would certainly consider that place to train.

Event-1 260lb Log Press for Reps
I was really excited about this event since I had previously gotten 9 reps at this weight. I ended up only getting 2 reps . That log for some reason felt much heavier than 260. I can't explain it but this was not the way I wanted to start the day.

Event-2 Deadlift Max
I opened with 525 and it was easy. I went up to 575 for the next lift and I was expecting it to good off the floor. I was shocked when it came off the floor very slow. I fought it up to my knees and used a slight hitch to regroup and battled it to the top. The lift felt like it took 5 minutes but none the less it was a 30lb PR in a suit.

Event-3 260lb Farmer Walk 100ft
I had never done these so I wasn't sure what to expect. I started fine and once I made the turn I hit an uneven portion of pavement and lost my balance right before the finish. I regrouped and finished it out.

Event-4 700lb Tire Flip
I ended up getting 9 flips here which was disappointing and really this came down to conditioning. I could have done better here had I prepared better. I should have gotten 13 or so.

Event-5 56lb Implement Toss for height.
I was tired and stiff by the time this got here and did my final toss at 11ft. I probably could have gotten 12 but I was tired and ready to go.

The guy I was going against was a beast and schooled me at every event. It was an awesome experiance and I can't wait to do the next contest in June. I got 2nd in my weight class and the top 2 go to nationals so I have a lot of work to do to get ready for that level of competition.

Kickass work bro!

How many wings did it take to get you to the right weight?

Ok, finally got a chance to view the video - your second rep with the log was your best. You need to work on more leg involvement. I wish you live closer - we'd have you powerjerking a 320+ log in a matter of weeks.

Also, when cleaning the log, get it high in your lap, elbows high and roll it up. You'll use less energy and it will help with getting it rolled into position on your chest. At chest level, roll the log on the way up to where your elbows are high and the handles are tilted slightly back toward your face. This will ensure that when you drive with your legs the log will take a natural path to just behind the head at lockout. Take a look at the 2nd rep - you did a good job of it here. We just need to drill it in a little more.

For the farmers - get set! I know you are worried about speed, but come to lockout before you walk. At this point, you need to perfect the little things to get faster overall. On the turn, turn your shoulders back into the turn about 3/4 of the way through and you'll come out in line.

You have some tremendous potential and we'll get you to where I know you want to be. When can you come to KC for a couple days? :)

Wow awesome thanks. I think it was a bigger log than I had practiced on and it threw me off from the start. I was pissed about that.

That was the first time I had ever done farmers.

I will talk to my wife an maybe she would like to go check out the city. I've been there once before and its nice. If not maybe I can drive up sometime soon. I'll talk to her and let you know.

Nice job, man!! That deadlift was epic. Your deadlift really took off! Nice job on the farmers. I don't know much about strongman, but when I saw you take off on those farmers I was like, "there's no way some other guy could have beat him." You were flying.

I liked the TTU shirts, as well. Way to represent!

Squats
225x5

I had to quit during the squats. I have some nagging aches that were not having this type of workout. My elbow and forearm, right rib, and right groin are still not feeling great.

I am going to finish off this week with some foam roll, stretching and mobility work to try and get back to 100%. I will start again fresh Monday.

I'm giving some serious thought to opening a Crossfit Gym in my area. There is not one very close and I think it would do very well here. My SIL is a trainer and very into crossfit so she would be the one running the training. My ultimate goal would be to grow that into a PL/SM gym as well.

You can buy pre-packaged equipment for around 10-20k. My plan is to scan craigslist and ebay to try and get the equipment cheaper. Training would be primary ran by my SIL and I may get NASM certified if it make sense.

Anyone have any ideas they think would be useful for this.

Craigslist is a great idea.. look for gyms closing too..

I know someone who can make you tons of nice gear much cheaper than most places..

pm incoming.

There's a place in OKC that deals in used gym equipment. Do a search.

And I will make fun of you incessantly for going the crossfit way, but if it makes sense business wise I say go for it.
