Word is from his coach that luckily he did not break anything but just dislocated. I'm sure it hurt like hell either way.

YEs is can! haha

that looks like it hurt. but if he had squatted to proper depth to catch that weight he would have been ok. that would never pass in the ipa or usapl!

BTW-- why were the plates outside the collar?

I was wondering the same thing.

Hopefully he has no severe ligament damage, and will recover fully from this

If you go to the NBC Olympic site, you can download a viewer and watch whole events instead of the 10 minutes worth of coverage they give things. It's taped of course but I watched some of the lighter guys lifting the other day when I should have been working.

I like the little blinds they brought out so now could see what was going on. That was still brutal to see!!! I was wondering by the pics if got hit by the weight or not.

With newer sets, the "change" goes on the outside of the collar to get the meet moving faster. The change plates are more rubbery on the inside and don't slide off, really. At big meets, they always use a brand new set of plates and a brand new bar, which is why you see the change on the outside of the collars, these days.

interesting. i really respect Olly lifting, esp after trying to do an overhead squat with just the barbell. i felt like a total ass clown! very humbling experience, esp after my gf did it with 25s on the bar! haha

Yeah - I gotta admit I was freaked out the first time I had the change go on the outside at a meet. It looks like they will just fly off, but they barely move even after you drop the weight back to the floor.
