I always wondered what kind of plates are used during a PL meet. The ones in those pics seem different from the standard ones I see at the gym. I have seen a lot of pics from meets and they all seem to be these crazy shiny looking plates that I don't see anywhere else. Can you guys explain to me about them?

Are they 25kg plates? 6*25 + 20kg bar = 170kg?
By the bend in the bar I was thinking its more than 170kg

Those plates are freaking expensive, that's why you don't see them at just any gym.

Im pretty sure thats more than 170kg, but DL bars can whip quite a bit without a ton of weight on them.
They may be 50 kilos as KAstro said, I'm not too familliar with the colors.

notice the insert brass plug in the high dollar ones makes them better then 5 gram accuracy. and the low dollar ones to 10 gram accuracy.

Green bands= 50Kg ~ 110 lbs
reds=25Kg ~ 55 lbs
The deadlifter in the pic has at least 325Kg(716 lb) if it's a standard 20Kg bar with 2 1/2Kg collars.
Chrome Ivanko plates are sweeet.

Are plates like those used in every meet by every federation?

They may not be exactly the same because there are a few different manufacturers of them, but yes, every meet will use calibrated plates.

No, local meets sometimes use whatever plates are in the gym. For a National or World meet, there will always be calibrated plates.
