I am going to school to become a Packaging Engineer and was just curious to know if there are any other members on WBB that majored in Packaging?

I majored in Industrial Engineering and am working as a manufacturing engineer, but I've done my share of packaging design. I didn't even know you could go to school to be a packaging engineer.

you would will have more job possibilities with a degree in M E or I E and you could still become a packaging engineer with those degrees.

I don't really know what that degree entails, as long as you learn mechanics, a 3D CAD program, some manufacturing practices and some basic lab work/senors/measurements/electronics it should be fine.

I'm not worried about finding a job....it's 100% job placement out of school. I was just wondering if there are any other packaging majors.

Geez... what kid out there grows up saying they want to be a packaging engineer? LOL.

But seriously, that does sound pretty boring. I know a few people in Manufacturing Engineering (a sub-division of the Mechanical department) and I imagine the two programs are similar. My boss's daughter-in-law is doing quite well right out of school with that degree.

FWIW, I'm a Civil major. Some of the classes are interesting, but it's also pretty boring overall.

what ever you do, dont work for a fudge company then....... i'm jus' sayin'

but ya why not get just a regular ME degree? its more versatile, i have done some packaging designs and its boring and sucks.

All a matter of opinion.

There is more to packaging than just the structural design. You can go into sales, marketing, graphic design, machinery, etc. Not trying to justify my major...just trying to explain to you what it's all about.

Right now I am working for Nestle Nutrition and designing a package that is BPA free and tamper evident.

I'm a civil engineer myself. Probably the lowest paying one, but at least I get to be outside a lot...as opposed to designing a bolt!

In my opinion, any engineering degree is beneficial. I know that the Wisconsin Department of Transportation employs people who have various engineering degrees...not just civil. That might be true for a lot of places.
