I bet the real Ditka could pull 600 pounds while smoking a cigar, but I cant...at least not yet.

First PL related goal, pull 600 pounds in a meet. Ive done 585 in training recently so completing this goal in the fall should be pretty manageable. Ive met up with the 1-0-7 guys a few times now but 5AM is too early for me so Ill be doing most of my training at a different gym and meeting up with them on weekends as much as I can.

I had an Oct 25th NASA meet in mind but Ben mentioned an 11/8 KC APF meet so if that does indeed happen Im 99% sure Ill compete then instead.

Here is a video of a 515 pull in training recently, Im open to any advice on form or anything else.

Looks like you start fine but at a certain point you start to drop straight down like you are looking for the box or something. It will come with practice.

Boys and girls, if for some crazy reason the mood strikes you to run marathons, run a 31 mile race, and bike multiple 100 mile races...DONT DO IT.

Yeah, I need to stay tight all the way to the bottom and get rid of that loose drop and searching for the box. Thanks for the help yesterday, Ill really focus on it...I need to direct lots of energy to my squat.

Oh yeah, my buddy was buying a new truck yesterday and couldnt get done in time to come down. Im training with him tonight and Im pretty sure he will come down this weekend for DE bench.

Heavy upper body + no hamstring strength = EPIC fail.

First "rep" I tried the bottoms of both hamstrings locked up on me and then I proceeded to about kill myself when trying to get off the damn thing. You had to be there...was just about as smooth as sandpaper.

Lower back is still tight from the 10 singles with 500 last week so Im going to squat tomorrow night instead and move to an alternating ME lower plan between squats and DL's. The DL progression plan I was using was pretty good but I feel like it was focusing too much on just DL's and not allowing me to work on something that could have even more carryover to my pull...and that is to hammer my squat.

First time Ive free squatted in about 2 months. 315 for 5 felt great and I had more in the tank but saved it for the 365 for 3. Back felt OK on the speed DL's...still a bit off. Front squats felt awesome.

Nope...this past winter I did 355 for 1 and 350 for a double. But I should beat those pretty soon...this summer I didnt do any benching really and didnt start again until the morning I lifted with you lads.

Im a big fan of it...Id love to row from the floor but my lower back doesnt agree with me right after lower on Monday.

My grip was great on my DL's, see below

My low back was feeling good enough to pull heavy

The bad news:
I only pulled 550 and I **** you not, it took 5 minutes

Pain.

Cambered bar is the bar with the open area in the middle...watch these drawing skills. This is the bar if you lay it on the ground and look at it from the top. Just stand in the middle.

We use 25 pound plates so its like a deficit deadlift but the weight is more over the middle of your body since the bar wraps around you.

If those crazy drawing skills dont do it I can just explain it tomorrow.

Oh ok, so you don't actually grab the camber, but the side then? Kind of like a trap bar pull but with a different grip?

Right, its like a trap bar pull....as close as we can get it since we have no trap bar.

Grip is right on the "normal" part of the bar before the joint.

maybe try going to a higher box? low wide is also tough, especially if you aren't too flexible. It will help with learning the form at least.

14 was actually 2 inches higher then what I had been doing and it felt good...but that is something Ill keep in mind. Ill post the video as soon as its uploaded.

Next thing I need to work on is how I come off the box...need to think big chest when I come off as its still a bit good morningish. But right now wider stance and sitting back with the knees out is all I can keep in my head at once:)

Back from vaca, had a good time and back to training tonight. Was going to train out there but with all of the hiking I decided to take a few days off and start again tonight.

Bummer about the November meet, need to figure out what Im going to shoot for now.

I love front squats. Have not done them in a while and miss them. I love how I can feel it so much in my core and quads. Especially since we don't do any direct quad work. Which is weird since I started powerlifting because my quad development is better than when I did direct work. Go figure. Also have not done RDL's in awhile.

Anyone have attempt suggestions for my pull only meet Saturday? I was thinking maybe 550 as I could triple it, then shoot for a 10 pound PR, then go for broke...so:

610, or what I call a Reko+5 :)

Sure, I may even go with a comfortable double as the opener, that way its not a large jump. If I recall in training you took smaller jumps so it might be a hosck. Just a thought.

Weighed in at 214.4 and then ate non stop until I lifted. Pizza, Gatorade, bagels, pretzels, pasta, brownies, ice cream. The morning of the meet I was 220.8.

Bar was pretty damn thick, no whip at all either so I lowered my attempts...

9 for 9 whites.

In seeing the 606 video I MIGHT have had 5-10 more pounds in me but Im very happy with the results given how long I had to wait and the bar. Had a great time, best deadlift by 50 pounds regardless of age or weight class so I got the overall deadlift trophy and one for my weight class/age.

Lessons learned...
1) As noted above, I was too worried about making weight if the scale was off from what I had been using. Next time I plan on BARELY making weight and doing it over a shorter timeframe.

2) Bring a decent amount of real food to the meet, I had to wait quite a few hours to lift and after a while bagels and power bars get old.

Ive got my eye on some raw national records in the DL that Im going to shoot for and Id like a legit 3XBW deadlift next.

Thanks to AJL, Reko, Ben, Will and the rest of the 1-0-7 guys for all their help the past couple of months.

Got some good feedback on my squat form which Ive been working on...sitting back and spreading my knees has paid off and now I need to turn my focus into leading with my chest which I got a good tip for....try to turn my elbows up when I come out of the bottom.

Im starting to conclude that since my 345X3 and 405 2 board that my elbow is...I believe *****ed is a good word that sums it up. During any sort of bench Im not even really dialed into the weight...Im more in tune with the feeling of my elbow coming out of the skin. So with that I believe Im going to just try and maintain my bench and put more focus into back work and overhead pressing during my upper days. Not a bad fit as my overhead work sucks and the back work should help my pull which is what Im really concentrating on.

Im going to hike the mofo on race day and there will be no running of it at all...90% of the people who enter walk/hike it.

Maybe 1/2 hazing...so maybe every other day comments about wearing lycra running shorts and being less then 200 pounds. But on the other day giving me break as dragging myself up an effing mountain deserves a day off now and then?;)

Little over 13 miles up, hiking it, 6:30 hour cutoff.

IDK what everyone else thinks, but I don't think the plate changes are too bad. And I'll top out before everyone else so toward the end, the plates aren't having to be changed.

I don't think its a big deal.

I keep asking and asking...I think they are very comfortable there and with the numbers Ive told them that you guys move I think they just feel out of their element. Last week they seemed to be open to it but made the comment of coming down when its warmer.

IMHO, it's ****ing awesome that you can stay in good condition, do your triathlon craziness, AND lift very respectable numbers. I'd say more but they'll say we're in love.

217 today, cut on son...cut on. Such a nice day yesterday and with working from home I managed to get lots of c*********** in. Lifting some of those things called weights tonight up north at some point. Not sure what you are doing DE wise AJL but Ill be up at Steele if interested and wouldnt mind getting in this weekend at Steele or the dungeon.
