Now normally I would arch up and just push my upper back into the bench but today I really focused on holding that arch and in the process really had to flex my back and lats hard. I quickly learned how to repeat this process and it made benching feel MUCH easier. Is that what you guys mean by staying tight? By really tightening up your upper back and lats and squeezing them hard through the movement?

My bench absolutely sucks so take my opinion FWIW, but yes. Drive your shoulders towards your feet and drive your scapula down and together, upper back tight, squeezing your arse and abs, driving your heels into the ground and creating arch. Done right, you should be one tight mofo.
And don't forget to squeeze the snot out of the bar.
