I had one of those strength coaches that would "spot" you the whole lift without ever taking his hands off the bar.....I put 350 on the bar my senior yr. @ 210lbs.....Flew up like nothing!!! I asked if he helped?? "Of course I did not help.....We are maxing out!!!! he says...like Im some kind of Idiot....

He walks into the other room, I weight about 5min and put 315 on the bar and have my buddy spot me..1..2..3.....BURIED....lol......

I always thought that was funny, Coach made everybody feel good about their bench!!!!

10-03-2008, 12:34 PM
I cant stand when people wont take there hands off the bar.

I weighed 170 and my max was 275. I must have tried 300 a bazillion times but never could get it. Wasn't until i started gaining weight that I finally got my numbers up.

10-03-2008, 04:04 PM
Senior year I weighed 230 lbs. and benched 310 lbs.

10-03-2008, 04:59 PM

I weighed 140-145 throughout most of high school. I never lifted in high school, but when I was 25 I first bench 85, I think, for 12 reps. 2 years later Im up to a max of 230

Unfortunatly in highschool I was a member at a gym that was inundated with bodybuilders. I remember my best being 275 at about 170lbs bodyweight my senior year. I didn't hit 315 until I was a sophomore in college when I switched to powerlifting.

10-03-2008, 09:46 PM
Senior year I weighed 275 and very vividly remember getting stuck under 185 pounds. Was not good, I was a puss!!!

Wolfe, you're always an inspiration.

I remember maxing 205 senior year in high school. I'm at 300 now (sophomore year of college).

10-03-2008, 09:57 PM
I was 198 and benched 225x6

Senior year I weighed 275 and very vividly remember getting stuck under 185 pounds. Was not good, I was a puss!!!

You have no idea how good that makes me feel.

145 as a freshman benching 115lbs
165 as a senior and thats after losing 15 do to acl reconstruction then putting back on 10 and benching 225.

10-04-2008, 12:37 AM
210+ weight Freshmen year Bp max of 95 in football. Didn't lift much senior year but 185*3 was the best I got junior year after i quit football. Weak sauce! When I started lifting again this june my bench was a measly 115*5 piss poor form reps now I'm getting 205*2.
Iv'e always had good intensity when it came to working out the only differences that come to mind were my diet and technique. I gained more strength these past 4 months than those 3 years in high school. pisses me off but at the same time i'm glad I've learned what NOT to do and what works for me.

10-04-2008, 12:50 AM
I'm suprised at some of these numbers, especially guys like Travis and Wolfe. Gives me hope, lol.

10-04-2008, 08:04 AM
195 bdw, 95 bench, 135 Squat and Deadlift. This was back in the day when I was usually bike riding or skateboarding. I sucked at skateboarding.

10-04-2008, 08:28 AM
180*225 bench:omg:

10-04-2008, 09:27 AM
Senior year; weighed about 150, benched 260 of course bounced with ass in the air I'm sure... shortly after high school I learned about powerliftng and hit like 240 in my first meet.

10-04-2008, 09:36 AM
Weighed something like 225 as a senior in high school and benched 315 at our fb lift-a-thon, though, the form was probally pretty bad on this.

10-04-2008, 09:42 AM
I was 6'3", 135lbs and I remember repping with 90lbs my first time benching. Nobody f***ed with me after that!!!

10-05-2008, 02:30 AM

I was thinking the same thing.

10-05-2008, 05:21 AM

my sophmore year i benched 105 x 1. at the end of sophmore year, after starting a weight training class, i benched 155 x 1.

i went from 235 to 245 lbs BW.

i'm not sure what i could bench my senior year, because i stuck to DB's because i always lifted by myself. 80's x 5 i believe.

10-05-2008, 10:09 AM
going off memory my progression was something like this. 150 at like 155 heading into 9th grade, 200 at about 175 heading into 10th grade, 230 at 195 lbs heading into my junior year and 300 at 230 heading into my senior year. Unfortunately my bench press did not increase much in college. We did 3 rep maxes and the best I got was 285 at 205 lbs during my sophmore year. I lost and gained weight in college, but never did the weight increase really help out the bench, though it did help with squats, deads, and cleans.

10-05-2008, 10:27 AM
I first started lifting my senior year. I was 140lbs and benched 95. I did mostly DB work since I had no spotter. I remember the DB rack was broken into 2 sections under 45 and over 45. I remember it being a big deal to me when I could finally bench on the bigger db rack. Then another big deal when I could do shoulder presses on the db rack.

10-05-2008, 01:26 PM
165 @ 140 dripping wet.

10-05-2008, 06:19 PM
bw 190 bench 300 (probably more than I do now)

10-05-2008, 06:33 PM
At the end of senior year I got 225 weighing at 145.

10-06-2008, 09:55 AM

First time ever touching weights as a Freshman at 14 yrs old hit 115 lbs x 2 or 3 at 150 lbs bodyweight. A month or so later (and once I found out that the bar actually weighs 45 lbs) I hit 195 lbs at 150 lbs 15 yrs old. Junior year hit raw 365 lbs at 185 lbs with a pause. I have pictures from then.

Finally started to put on size and I remember for my 18th birthday I wanted 405 lbs, ended up with 385 lbs x 3 and just missed 405 at 200 ish lbs bodyweight. I do remember hitting 225 lbs x 17 reps in high school for football and squatting 315 lbs x 20. I also did 100+ pushups for a free t-shirt when the Marines came to my school and that military recruiter would not stop calling me!

Too bad that I don't really bench, probably could have gone in the high 400's raw if I had kept with it. In high school I did have access to a lot of good knowledge on the internet and was training realatively intelligently right off the bat (not neglecting muscle groups, resting, drinking protein shakes, heavy compound movements, etc.)

What I think gives away those who are genetically gifted in this area is the speed at which they increased their lifts once they got involved in good training. Some of you here have come a very long way

10-06-2008, 05:24 PM
Senior year I weighed 275 and very vividly remember getting stuck under 185 pounds. Was not good, I was a puss!!!

So was I. I was embarrassed to be seen benching so I did it after the football team left. With my "The Crow" hairstyle. lol

In the summer between 10th and 11th grade, I think it was in May I weighed 190 and was training hard so I could make a starting position on the football team come the fall and I did a touch and go with 405 no spot no shirt. Did my first bench meet that year (june 89) I was 16, I paused 365 at 192 no shirt. My first real bench in a real meet. APF meet in brooklyn NY. And no I didnt start messing with anabolics till after highschool. That was where it started for me.. I witnessed the great Chris Confessore weighing 181 in those days bench 565 in a single ply blast shirt. In them days a triple bodyweight bench was very rare..

10-07-2008, 06:55 PM

10-08-2008, 01:43 PM
6'3, 165lbs soaking wet and benched 240lbs my senior year of high school...fun times.

I was the strongest guy in my school...how sad is that!!!

10-08-2008, 02:50 PM
365 @ 240

10-08-2008, 03:22 PM
16yrs. old, junior year, spring of '88, nothing earth shattering.
305(w/ pause) @ 196 in a high school meet. Most of my mass was in my lower body at the time; I was more of a big squatter. Coincidentally did a 305 C&J in the same meet for a 610 total. Yes, Florida is the home of bench press/clean and jerk weightlifting.
I remember marveling, though, at my teammate Lee Hanks. In 1990 he was 181 and did 425 in one of our meets with a long pause. That blew my mind!

10-08-2008, 03:53 PM
I think I only tried maxing out once in high school, in gym class. I was a junior at the time and weighed about 120lbs. I benched 110. Pretty pathetic.
