You should get some carbs in after your workout to replenish depleted glycogen stores and to take advantage of the post-workout insulin response. The amount of carbs that is optimal varies depending on the rest of your diet, especially your pre-workout nutrition. The carbs don't have to come in shake form.

It depends how many carbs you are eating throughout the day, and especially how many carbs you are eating during the period immediately preceding your workout.

What are your stats? I'm going to go out on a limb and say that 1500 calories is nowhere near enough for you.
