I benched 315 today, for a 15 pound PR and huge milestone for me. After 3 months of working on my form/technique, I think I'm starting to "get" benching.

No, it went up quick and way easier than I was expecting. Very cool. I think my DE work is really starting to show.

So what's your next goal?

Short term goal is a 550 deadlift. I haven't thought much about my next bench goal. I'm just enjoying reaching this one, LOL.

6 months ago, I never maxed out. Back then I was doing more of a bodybuilder type workout, and I would do sets of 225-250 x 10 ( embarrassed to say with my elbows flaired out ). But that was before I was bitten by the iron bug, before I started doing the westside conjugate method, before I started doing squats again, and before I met up with the group of guys I now do ME bench workouts with,.... My bench has gone up 50 pounds in the last 2.5 months, which is HUGE for somebody with my wingspan. More importantly though, today I felt like I finally got it, how to bench that is. It's very cool. I'm felling really good about benching right now, LOL.

By the way I felt this morning, I honestly could see getting there in a year. Very amazing, considering how long I was "stuck" with benching when I was doing bodybuilder type workouts, ie before I started powerlifting.

Thanks everybody. This forum is a big part of why my bench has gone up. I really appreciate everybody's advice, encouragement, and the motivation I get from the positive energy here.

Sweet press man. I have 315 as a goal by Jan 25 (my bday). I just beat my bench pr the other day... what a great feeling. congrats.

I'm sorry, i've tried googling... what does "DE work" entail?

Cmanuel

it means dynamic effort. Its a part of the westside conjugate method of training. Try googling that term.

As Cmanuel said, it means dynamic effort. The idea is to work on explosive strength. On DE bench sessions, I take about 60% of my max ( many times some of that is with bands ), and I do about 12 sets of 3 reps with as much speed as possible. The focus is on explosive speed and not the weight, in fact I've found going too heavy on DE work has a negative impact on my max effort sessions. I've had issues with benching really slow at weight near my max, but that's clearly starting to change as yesterday my 315 was anything but slow.

Google "westside conjugate method" or read some of the articles on the westside barbell website.

Holy Crap! These last couple weeks have been awesome for me. Two weeks ago, I squatted 405 for a PR, last week I pulled 475 ( easily and almost got 495 ) for a PR, yesterday benched 315 to reach a milestone I've wanted to get to for YEARS!, AND today I squatted 425 for another PR. I barely got it, I had to strain hard and was seeing stars big time after I racked it. It felt awesome.

Man thats awesome! You need to post a video of that one. You know its a PR for sure when you start to see stars haha.

BTW didnt realize you were from Cola SC. Are you a gamecocks fan?

Nice job on the PR! You'll be amazed how quickly you get from the 3-plate barrier to the 4-plate barrier once you "get" benching, particularly at your size it should come in no time.
