final day of this week for the 2s/negatives for HST
I'm officially stopping it now and gonna take next week off for lifting to give my body a chance to recover
also, I did a stupid, stupid, stupid thing today
hyped from my success on Wednesday, I went temporarily insane and thought about trying to pull 450 today
not such a good plan. got it up to knee level (which was a good sign) and then something in my low back went *SPANG* and i put the bar down rather quickly...
I rested, stretched a bit and then did some reps at 315 to make sure I was ok, and I guess it's just a muscle strain but it was a pointless, needless thing. What was I thinking?
I've been meaning to for a while but I also think my dead form could use a refresher/review... ElP, rookie, what say we have a little powerlifting clinic sometime in early march? get together at Pete's gym and practice the core lifts for form and critique each other, etc?

And I'm glad your back is ok. :)

good thing I have a chiropractor on tap at home. :D

Powerlifting clinic? Hell YES!!!! Since I've already made a fool of myself at LP's gym so that location sounds great. :D March will likely work for me as well now that my wife is back to working semi-normal hours again.

weekend update:
- relaxed with a friend all weekend, drinking (a few) beers, playing Gran Turismo 3, cruising around town and hitting the bars, generally getting into trouble. Much fun, very relaxing and much needed.
my back is almost 100% again, which is comforting. Gonna take this week off, maybe work on my tan and then get back into the swing of things after a layoff.

Day 1 of deconditioning after HST
LMAO at "deconditioning". It sounds so much more technical than "rest" or "taking a break".
Diet has been pretty much on, though I'm consuming too much supps and not enough real food.
Went tanning today and came away feeling energized. Love that Vitamin D.
Also, my company prez stopped by to chat about my lifts today and offered a pass to HIS gym. Apparently they just re-kitted-out their powerlifting and freeweight area and he said it's incredible. Plus it's close downtown as well.
down side is that it's probably expensive. Up side is that if it's more hardcore and there are bigger guys there, it will be better FOR me as a lifter.
rookiebldr
02-24-2003, 03:47 PM
foo, it's "strategic deconditioning"! :D :D
That's pretty cool having a president into lifting. Does that mean he's hardcore as well? Maybe he'll give you a raise to offset the added expenses. A strong healthy employee will cost the company less. :)
That's cool having someone in your office who's into lifting. Maybe you can train with him and intimidate him into a free membership.
Relentless
02-25-2003, 08:24 AM
our president isn't really hardcore, he's more or less just keeping his body in decent condition for his active lifestyle (golf, scuba, sailing, etc.) and he was bashful about training with me because he's pretty competitive and I think he wouldn't want to seem 'weaker' than me
but he's a helluva nice guy
we're a pretty small company and I dont' forsee comped gym memberships anytime soon but ah well
we'll see what the new gym looks like

FYI all
if you're awake at 7am on Tuesday of next week in Toronto, tune in to Edge 102.1FM... they'll be calling me to participate in the WHEEL OF GREED challenge (sorta like a Fear Factor thing). I basically get a randomly selected challenge by spinning the wheel of greed. I have a shot at winning all kinds of cool shiznit.
If I accept I'll go into the Edge Studios on Wednesday Morning to participate.
Non-Torontonians can also listen to the audio streaming at www.edge.ca
Wish me luck

Callahan's 90-Day Kick-ElPietro's-Ass TKD Cutting/Improvement Cycle
Monday, March 3, 2003
Days Remaining: 90
Sleep Last Night:
6.5 hours
Weight:
As of last night, 228. It seems extra food plus HST = mass gains. I don't look/feel fatter, but I'm up about 14lbs from when I started HST. Sorry rookie. ;) Good genes I guess. Arms and chest are clearly thicker and have merited comment from those that know me. Legs lagged a bit I think but didn't lose ground.
Diet:
For the next 2 weeks, I'll not be logging food specifically as I gradually wean myself from carbs. As of March 17th (St. Pat's) I will have a few Guinness to celebrate the day and then it's strict calorie-counting TKD time.
Supplementation:
2 scoops Elite Mega Mass pre and post workout
5g creatine post
5g glutamine post
1500mg glucosamine sulfate
Multivitamin w/ Green Superfood Concentrates
1000mg additional Vitamin C
Pondering getting on caffiene/ephedra again once I'm in ketosis... I've read conflicting reports about the effect of caffiene on ketosis. Any insights are welcomed.
Workout:
Chest & Tris
Incline DB Bench
10x55 6x75 4x100 10x75
Not bad lifting. Felt strong and stable throughout. Had to grind on the last rep @ 100s. I want 6x100 soon!
Dips
BWx10 BW+25x6 BWx9
Not bad... need to focus on these so I can start laying on the weight... once I get 6 on the DBs, I may start doing dips first.
Flye Machine
180x12 240x6 210x7 Dropset from 210-> 80 or so, in 30-lb increments.
Had trouble seeing after the dropset. I guess I pushed pretty hard.
1-H reverse tricep Pushdowns
80x6/6, 100x3/3, 80x8/8, 50x16/16
I was really pissed that I was only able to get 3s at the 100-mark. grip on the handle was part of the issue but still. I want MORE here.
2-H tri pushdowns
170x6
6 reps with the stack to completely fry triceps. Almost painfully pumped at this point
Pec Dec
One massive dropset just to kill off pecs.
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
So yeah. If you've been keeping up with ElPietro's journal, we've decided to have a friendly competition for improvement between now and June 1. We're not being real strict on criteria and such as we're both honourable types and figure we can sort out who's looking the best/most improved between ourselves. But if we can't decide then we'll throw it open to WBB to vote. It's only a $100 bet but it's the honour at stake that I'm after. Plus I love a competition.
Gonna get pics done ASAP to register current condition and hell, maybe I'll also take a pic with a newspaper for "Body For Life" purposes. 2 birds with one stone and all that.
I purchased Lyle MacDonald's "The Ketogenic Diet: A complete guide for the Dieter and Practitioner" online last week and have been reading. TKD seems to be the way I want to go and I will solidify a meal plan/diet over the next 2 weeks of gradual de-carbing. I think I will attempt to plan out my meals somewhat so I can shop accordingly but I'll also design some 'component' meals that I can basically swap in and out/around to provide variety.
Song of the Moment:
Party Hard - Andrew W.K.... all of the songs I've heard by Andrew WK sound the exact bloody same. But putting ONE of them in a mix is nice. Good energy. Upbeat song. Not much on talent but eh... it's FUN music.

Haha, you will fail the wheel of greed! I hope you get the 102 hotdogs like the first guy got! That'll help you with your futile efforts to cut up!
Although, I have only eaten worse, and haven't actually weight trained in over two weeks, I feel mentally primed to deliver unto you an ass-whooping of brobdingnagian proportion.
Buying Lyle's books now huh? Keep reading punk. Struggle all you may, to find the answers you seek, but you will not find a solution that will enable you to collect from this guy!
Good luck! LOSER!!!

starting measurements
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 228
Neck: 17.5"
Chest: 49.25" (around the nipples, full inhale)
Waist: 35" (bellybutton height)
Hips: 42" (midglute or so)
Right bicep: 16.75"
Left bicep: 17"
Right forearm: 12.75
Left forearm: 12.75
Right quad: 25"
Left quad: 25.5"
Right calf: 16"
Left calf: 16"
overall I'm guardedly pleased with these numbers. Comparing them to the last time I did measurements (April 2002), I'm at lower BF%, higher weight and:
- up 1.25" Chest
- down 1" Waist
- up 1" on both quads :D
- down .5" on both calves
- about the same on biceps (inexplicably slightly smaller on right)
- forearms were measured wrong last time; I had bent my arms. 12.75" ain't bad though. They LOOK better now. More vascular.

Well, it's confirmed.
I have to be a "human blender".
What this means is that I have to squish fruits with my head and/or
my bottom, generating enough juice to fill a pitcher, then quaff the
juice.
Piece of cake.

Bah, that's an easy one. I wasn't up in time to hear anything broadcast, and they were playing music at 8am when I left home. Figured they might recap some stuff. When do you have to do this, tomorrow morning?
Relentless
03-04-2003, 09:04 AM
aye, 7am tomorrow I go into the studios
Danger Boy or Todd made some kind of snide comment and then Dean Blundell followed up with something like "he sounds like he might be big... best not make too much fun of him in case he comes in here and kicks your ass". LOL!
I was quiet in the conversation on the air but t'was mostly coz I didn't want to make a scene on my little commuter bus. Blundell wanted to make sure I would be at least somewhat excited tomorrow and I assured him I would.
When he first called, he put the redneck Ontario accent on pretty thick but I didn't bite on the obvious hack on my living in Barrie (which they had on record). Of course, I can't call that kettle too black as I'm from the Soo originally, which is a lot like Barrie, only farther away, smaller, and smellier. He also asked what I did for a living and when they heard that I guess their attitude changed a bit as well; I'm not just some dumb redneck; I'm edjumicated and everything. :D

Callahan's 90-Day Kick-ElPietro's-Ass TKD Cutting/Improvement Cycle
Monday, March 3, 2003
Days Remaining: 89
Sleep Last Night:
6 hours
Weight:
Didn't check today.
Diet:
Basically clean today... even got breakfast in proper, which is a good start. Tomorrow will be a bit off, as I will have to drink a whack of fruit juice which will spike carbs something fierce. :D But it'll be worth it.
Supplementation:
2 scoops Elite Mega Mass pre and post workout
5g creatine post
5g glutamine post
1500mg glucosamine sulfate
Multivitamin w/ Green Superfood Concentrates
1000mg additional Vitamin C
Workout:
Back & Bis
Chins
Widegrip 10xBW, curl-grip 5xBW
Died early on the 2nd set probably due to inadequate rest. Likely will start adding weight here soon now that I can reliably get 10.
Bi-Angular Row
6 plates x 10, 10 plates x 2 + 8 plates x 4, 8 plates x 5, 6 plates x 11, 4 plates x 15
Well, the ROM was a bit suspect on the 10-platers but I did it... 8 plates is relatively easy now but I was a bit spent from the 10-plates. This made my back scream a bit but it was worth it to get within 2 plates of Belial. :D
EZ-Curl curls
115x6, 115x5
Feh. I want 7. I've done 6 already. It's a load of weight though. A bit of body sway on rep 5 of the 2nd set; was tiring.
narrow false-grip Pulldowns
120 x 10, 225 x 4, 180 x 6, 150 x 12
Some dude interrupted my set to ask about my grip and I explained to him what I knew of the biomechanics of pulldowns. I don't mind being interrupted for intelligent questions but I was breathing hard by this point in the workout which made communication a bit difficult.
Incline DB Curls
40s x 6, 40s x 7/6
urk. biceps well tired.
Cable Curls
80 x 10, 140 x 5, 140 x 5, 80 x 14
I thought they were tired before. This got them PUMPED. ;)
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
Did I mention my k@zoo MP3 player bonked again and I had to get it replaced? They don't make that one anymore so now I have a Lyra player. 128MB base memory, FM tuner, backlit display, track title display... and it cost me nothing extra. That $30 I spent on the super-warranty from Future Shop was SO worth it.

Relentless
03-05-2003, 07:53 AM
well, i did it
managed to pound several pounds of fruit into 2 litres of juice using my head (my butt wouldn't fit in the bucket they had for the stunt). I am officially a human blender and I've got at least a 1/20 chance of winning a whole whack of stuff.
I'm trying to convince the producers of the contest to make the final selection a competition rather than simply a random spin. I recommended Ultimate Fighting Challenge or perhaps Powerlifting. But I'm biased. ;)
I didn't puke on the radio, I just coughed while they were pouring fruit juice down my throat. Not the same thing. ;)

Lat pulldowns, grip less than shoulder width, hands pronated (palms-in).
As with chins, I understand that this puts the bicep in a stronger position, enabling it to last longer and allowing you to hit your lats for more work in the motion.

Callahan's 90-Day Kick-ElPietro's-Ass TKD Cutting/Improvement Cycle
Thursday, March 6, 2003
Days Remaining: 86
Sleep Last Night:
7.25 hours
Weight:
Didn't check today.
Diet:
Pretty crap today. Not enough to eat at all and it affected my workout. Having the trots from all that bloody fruit juice yesterday didn't help at ALL. Ah well; slow and steady wins the race.
Supplementation:
2 scoops Elite Mega Mass pre and post workout
5g creatine post
5g glutamine post
1500mg glucosamine sulfate
Multivitamin w/ Green Superfood Concentrates
1000mg additional Vitamin C
Workout:
Deads Shoulders Traps
Deads
225x8, 315x3, 315x3, 405xfail
I blame it on a combination of bad diet and being a bit scared after hurting myself on 450 last time. No big. I'll get there again. I do want to critically reexamine form though. Must see if there's a powerlifting coach in Toronto I can hire for a session or two.
Military Press
135x10
Just felt like doing some of these before putting away the deadlifting bar.
Arnold Press
75sx6!!, 65sx10
New PR I think. Good solid reps. Almost makes up for missing 405. Almost.
Lateral Raises
40x6, 30x10, 25x14
Excellent power and ROM even w/ heavy weights. I must be getting better at this!
Bentover Rear Delt Raises
25sx8, 35sx6, 25x8
Haven't done these in a while. Nice.
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
Work is hard. But good. I like being busy... except for the tired part.
I was posing my calves a bit in the mirror between deadlift sets and finally sorta figured out how to get a good contraction on them without hurting/charleyhorsing. Maybe I'll take some calf pics this weekend. They are starting to look damned good.

Callahan's 90-Day Kick-ElPietro's-Ass TKD Cutting/Improvement Cycle
Monday, March 10, 2003
Days Remaining: 82
Sleep Last Night:
7.5 hours (interrupted often by sick wifey)
Weight:
219 this morning. Down 9 lbs from the start of all this, and that just via a targeted ramp-down/control of carbs. I *feel* leaner already as well.
Diet:
Was pretty spot-on yesterday and will be aces today as well. Got me a whole bag of homemade burgers and some cheese for meals this week.
Supplementation:
35g dextrose preworkout
16mg ephedrine preworkout
2 scoops Elite Mega Mass postworkout (going to find lowcarb whey powder soon) - 58g carb, 35g protein
5g creatine postworkout
1500mg glucosamine sulfate
Multivitamin w/ Green Superfood Concentrates
1000mg additional Vitamin C
Cutting out glutamine as of now due to its possible interference with ketosis. I also found a place to buy dextrose in bulk so I can just mix it with water and fire it down rather than munching on farking candies.
Workout:
Legs
Leg Curls
150x20, 200x10, 200x10
Good solid reps... had juice left on set 1 at 200, but ground out the last 2 reps on set 2.
Leg Extension
355x15, 355x13
Not bad. 15 twice would be better. The endurance required is shocking... I can get 200+ 1-legged for 6 or 8, but getting to/past 15 with 2 legs at this weight is hard.
1-leg kneeling curls
90x10/10, 100x10/10
had to work to keep my ass down on the second set. The weight ain't HEAVY but I gotta not cheat and force mr. hammie to do the work.
Box Squats
225x10, 225x10
Nothing special here but all solid reps.
Leg Press
Dropset:
14 plates x 10
12 plates x 10
10 plates x 10
8 plates x 10
6 plates x 10
Didn't want to jump right up to 18 plates my first day doing Leg Press again but this seemed OK. had to unload the plates myself but that was OK. I sweated through my hoodie during this set.
Seated Lever Calf Press
225x5, 180x10, 180x10
While 'resting' I did 1-leg standing calf raises (to hit the gastroc more) on a bench. Only did 5 at 225 coz of a spasm in the left calf. Weird.
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
I dreamt last night that I was a wolf, chasing down prey and exulting in the joy of the hunt before bringing my quarry down and feasting on its flesh. I think eating all this protein is getting to me.
Overall it was a killer workout today. Dunno if it was the dextrose or the ephedra or something else but I was an ANIMAL out there today.

Well, it's partly proportional... a 150lb person would only need to lose about 5.9lbs to achieve the same net change as a %age of body mass. I'm pretty sure I was carrying a lot of excess water before as well, as a result of too much sodium and too many carbs.
Still, if it keeps up at anything close to this rate I will completely kick ElPietro's ass!!!!
P.S. My wife recently started the Suzanne Somers "Somersize" diet plan thing (basically lower-carb plus food combining). She dropped 7 lbs in the first week. So chicks can do it too. ;)

here's a pic of my empties from the last year or so... that's 5 4kg (8.8lbs) tubs of Elite Mega Mass, 5lbs of Designer Whey and 8lbs of that other crap.
I also have two empties of the Elite at home, which brings the total to just under 75lbs of whey powder I've consumed.
It gives me a strange feeling of satisfied accomplishment to see all those empties.

Callahan's 90-Day Kick-ElPietro's-Ass TKD Cutting/Improvement Cycle
Tuesday, March 11, 2003
Days Remaining: 81
Sleep Last Night:
7 hours
Weight:
218 this morning. Another pound. When I actually get into ketosis I can't WAIT to see what happens. :D
Diet:
Perfect yesterday and on track to being perfect today. I don't miss carbs, except for the convenience/accessibility.
Supplementation:
40g dextrose preworkout
16mg ephedrine preworkout
2 Scoops Designer Whey (180 cals, 35P 3F 3C) midmorning
2 scoops Elite Mega Mass postworkout (going to find lowcarb whey powder soon) - 58g carb, 35g protein
5g creatine postworkout
1500mg glucosamine sulfate
Multivitamin w/ Green Superfood Concentrates
1000mg additional Vitamin C
Workout:
Chest and Tris
Bench Press
135x15, 225x10, 225x9
No decent spotter around so kept it light.
Incline DB Press
9x75s, Failx100s, 6x75s
Underestimated how fatigued I'd be from the Benching. Normally I do these FIRST. Ah well.
DIPS
BWx10, BWx9, BW-50x8
Should have rested more before doing these. Not bad reps tho. As I lose weight, I'll have to start strapping some to myself.
Flye Machine
180x9.5, 225x4, 150x13.5
Pecs really getting fatigued.
1-H Reverse Tri Pushdowns
10/10x70s
13/13x50s
Normally I can do more weight but the extra bench sets at the beginning seem to have taken a lot outta my tris. Ah well. It felt good.
Cable Crossovers
10x60+60, 5x80+80
And I'm spent!
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
Not quite the animal I was yesterday but overall it was an intense, focused workout. Good pump achieved; had vascularity apparent on forearms/arms/front delts by the end of it. :D

Ah, I getcha. No big deal, J ... I wasn't stressed about what you'd written -- just confuzzled.
I did have a lot of fun; there were these two 'interns' that were working with the morning crew that kept commenting how matter-of-factly I went about it. This one chick asked if I'd planned out how I was going to do it and I laughed. No planning -- just a logical mind and a willingness to get the job done!
And I intend that the statue I resemble will be more Apollonian than Dionysian come June. ;)
Oh, and the chick that does the weather TOTALLY wanted me. :D :hump: she was kinda cute, too.

Get's expensive huh?
And nice job dropping 9 lbs. already. What weight are you wanting to drop down to mate?
Relentless
03-11-2003, 01:45 PM
I've dropped _10_ lbs already, thanks much! :p
The dextrose is DIRT cheap and the protein ain't that much more than buying steak all the time so I don't look at it as a big deal. MRP bars are hideously expensive but I have some of those for emergencies only, really. The Creatine is relatively cheap, and the ephedrine I get in bulk so I find it manageable. Say $100/month on supps, maybe a bit more. But not much more. Considering I spent $450 on food last month (for two of us) that's not too bad.
I am gonna drop weight until I have abs or until June 1 arrives, whichever comes first. :) Whatever it takes. My expectation is that I'll probably get down to just below 200. Maybe a little less... it'll depend on how much LBM I retain as I cut on this TKD. If I could drop 20lbs of fat only, I'd be 199 at ~11% I think. Realistically I'm gonna lose some LBM as well but hopefully not much. I'd be pretty happy at 192 or 195 and somewhere around 10%.
Anyway, before some arsehole goes criticizing my BF% estimates, the bottom line is that I don't care THAT much. My goal is to be substantially leaner than I am now. Not quite striated-glutes-lean, but abs lean. Deep cuts lean. Shirtless lean. :D

I got a few questions. The preworkout dextrose, do you mix it with water? and how long before the workout do you take it? about the Elite Mega Mass (it sounds like it's a weight gainer), how many grams of carbs does it have?

The preworkout dextrose, do you mix it with water?
-----
Yes
and how long before the workout do you take it?
-----
30 mins
about the Elite Mega Mass (it sounds like it's a weight gainer), how many grams of carbs does it have?
-----
It is a weight gainer, and 2 scoops of it contain: 3F, 60C, 34P; according to the TKD structure in Lyle's book, your workout days should shoot for 50g carb before and after workout. I'm going with 40/60 for now just coz that's convenient for me. Total carb on workout days jumps from 30-40 to 130-140 in that manner

Timing a bit off on meals today due to work :(
Meal 1 Labrada Lean Body Lowcarb Strawberry Cheesecake Bar
Meal 2 2 8oz burger patties, topped with cheddar cheese; salad greens with oil & vinegar dressing
Meal 3 - I'll grab something tonight, maybe eat another bar on the way home. Worked out late today which f***ed up my schedule.

Not bad.

10x20s, 6x40s, 12x30s, 16x20s
Shoulders burning after this one.
Shrugs
12x100s, 15x100s, 12x100s
Found my pace at last... breathing is hard on these; it's a trick to exhale and shrug up at the same time. But I got it now.
Bentover Rear Lat Raises

I'm moving to a SKD until I've been in keto a while; I want to see what happens to my workouts without carbs... see if I can get by without them. Mostly I'm sad that I seem to have dropped out of ketosis. Right now fat loss is more important to me; I can afford to lose a little muscle too if I gotta.
Workout:
Legs
Leg Extensions
335x15, 335x15
First time ever with 2 sets of 15 on this; endurance improving! Nice warmup!
Leg Curls
20x150, 10x210, 10x210
decent reps, very focused
Leg Press
Dropset:
10 plates x 10 (warmup)
16 plates x 10
14 plates x 6 (faltered a bit)
12 plates x 8 (better)
10 plates x 10
8 plates x 10
6 plates x 10
Next time I'll start on 18 plates again. Not bad for today tho.
1-leg kneeling curls
100x10/10, 110x6/6
getting winded by this point; fast pace plus I'm kinda sick
Seated Lever Calf Press
225x6, 225x8, 135x18
While 'resting' I did 1-leg standing calf raises (to hit the gastroc more) on a bench.
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
I'm ****ing sick. My tonsils are swollen up like infected dingo kidneys and my throat is raw. Gargling with salt water helped. I think it's mostly stress. I haven't been sleeping and have been working long hours lately and this is my body saying "slow down".
Belial - thanks for your kind words regarding curling a can of peaches. I actually have an exercise recommendation for you... you'll need a hammer and a big pile of sand... rep out to failure while pounding that sand up your ass!! ;)
ElPietro - regarding the cheese, lyle macdonald said, and I quote, "Your friend is probably thinking of the lactose in milk and such. Lactose is the combination of glucose and galactose. Either that or he's just an idiot."
LOL!!!! That character sure doesn't pull any punches.
:zipit:
Anyway, I did also find out some more useful information about excess protein, in that "Cheese normally has no or negligible amounts of sugars (lactose). Even curd has only 4 % of carbs. If you take in very much protein it will be converted to glucose (gluconeogenesis, 1,6 g of protein are converted to 1 g of carbs). But this will only happen if you are way above 1g/protein per lb of body weight nad it will happen with every protein source, no matter if dairy product or not (perhaps a bit more with whey than with casein)!"

urk
well, I worked all weekend and I'mm still kinda sick
plus I get to deliver a major product presentation tomorrow for our biggest potential client ever
yay
Anyway, weekend was on-track for diet despite feeling like eight kinds of crap. I lost another 2lbs (215 now!!). Don't know if I'm lifting today. We'll see.
I went to the Cameron House with some friends and caught a few bands.
First band: The Bicycles. (http://www.thebicycles.ca/) They played like a bunch of friends who just happened to be in a band together. Kind of a 60s folk-happy-PatridgeFamily thing. Lots of tambourines. They were unrelentingly happy in their music. I came away from listening to them actually happier than I really wanted to be at the time (I was comfortably morose about having to work all weekend). The kicker: My buddy Adam repeats this "happier than I wanted to be" comment to the drummer chick from the band, who happened to be near us at the bar getting a drink after the set. She said that that was ironic because most of them were pretty non-happy people. She was also kind of a cutie. She had a very nice voice and could sing while drumming, which was cool. The band had 2-3 other skilled musicians and a couple of 'deadweight' types that just sort of cluttered the stage. My guess is that one of them was someone's girlfriend and the other one owned a van. :D
The second band was called "Gay as the Day Is Long" (http://www.dayislong.ca/). Kind of a heavily distorted 70ish psychedelicish rock. Individually, the parts of the band were not bad. As a gestalt, they sucked. The drummer and the bass player were alright for the most part, if a bit generic. But I think it was the lead singer/guitarist that really hashed it up for me. Reliance on distortion and delay loops masked average-at-best guitar skills and between bad sound and too much guitar noise, the singer's voice was lost. Not that it sounded like the most angelic/crisp voice either. I think this band might not suck some day in the future, but they have to revisit their structure and dynamics.
The third band rocked. Hard.
The Golden Dogs (http://www.thegoldendogs.com) had a sound like the love-child of Elvis Costello and Neil Young (they covered a NY song to start) and a lead singer/frontman that looked like Iggy Pop with less heroin and had a manic intensity to his stage presence that I found engaging. I enjoyed all of their songs and meant to buy a CD on the way out but missed the chance. It doesn't hurt that they also had a chick in the band, and she was several important kinds of HOT!. :) PLus she sang and played keyboards AND harmonica. I was entranced. You can see her in this promo pic (kinda)
http://www.thegoldendogs.com/goldendogs_summer02a.jpg
Anyway, I highly recommend the Golden Dogs and would go see them again. In fact I will.
The other two bands, not so much. :D

Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
I hate being sick.
BUT
I am leaner. I can tell. 2 reasons:
1) My cheekbones are starting to reemerge. I had forgotten that I have pretty high cheekbones. Damn I'm pretty. Wait till I get down to 10%ish; I'll be getting offers to model, I betcha.
2) vascularity on biceps - I can see the vein that runs along the top of the biceps clearly now, even when not working bis... it's not standing out like a soda straw (yet!) but it's visible and lumpy atop the muscle! Yay!

Thanks for the well-wishing, cg and edmex.
I also lost another 2 lbs... down to 213 now. yeah!! I've noticed that what used to be the start of love-handles are now just roundings of fat on top of my obliques. I can see the shape of my abs under the layer of fat that still resides on my midsection and I have good confidence that if I can keep up this relative rate of weight loss/fat loss, abs by Jun 1 will not be a problem!

Callahan's 90-Day Kick-ElPietro's-Ass TKD Cutting/Improvement Cycle
Friday, April 4, 2003
Days Remaining: 58
Sleep Last Night:
6.5 hours.
Weight:
weighed in at 207!! at the gym today, but it's not the same as the scale at home so I don't trust it. ;) WIll re-weight tomorrow morning I think.
Diet:
Diet has been ****ing impeccable. I have no desire to cheat. I have no carb cravings. I eat meat, cheese, eggs, veggies and the occasional cheesecake (made with oligofructose so it's low-carb) and have been in keto for quite some time now.
Meal 1 - Labrada Lean Body lowcarb bar
Meal 2 - 3tbsp mayo, 1 can tuna
Meal 3 - 1 serving Designer Whey (postworkout)
Meal 4 - will probably be some salad and tuna
Meal 5 - will be some Swiss Chalet chicken. With the skin. :drooling:
I will start being stricter with calorie counts, etc next week I think. So far I've just been ballparking it, and I know generally how much I'm getting. But I wanna know exactly.
Supplementation:
1500mg glucosamine sulfate
Multivitamin w/ Green Superfood Concentrates
2000mg additional Vitamin C (upped dosage)
I have dropped the creatine for now as well. Don't need the water weight and I know I'm getting weaker anyway.
I think I'll start ephedrine/caffiene at the beginning of May.
Workout:
Back & Bis
Chins
Widegrip 8xBW, 6xBW
Definetly getting a bit weaker/less endurance. No matter. I'm leaner.
Bi-Angular Row
6 plates x 10, 6 plates x 9, 4 plates x 15
Slightly less than last time I did this. Not bad.
EZ-Curl curls
115x4, 115x4, 75x15, 75x12
weaker here... couldn't even CHEAT it up for a 5th rep! LOL!
narrow false-grip Pulldowns
150 x 10, 150 x 10, 105 x 20
Just some volume reps, same as last time. Good for fatiguing the muscles. Had to rest a few breaths at rep 16 of the last set..
Incline DB Curls
40s x 5, 40s x 5, 25s x6, 25s x6
left arm just kept failing, right actually got +1 rep on all these sets...
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
Well after all the work I've slaved thru the last few weeks, I got some recognition last night. A little award ceremony and thankyou from the Prez, and then I got a PocketPC with BlueTooth. A nice gift but I just KNOW it's also designed to chain me to my job even more (wireless email, etc.!). Still I really appreciated the recognition. They wanted to take me out for beers after but I had a Perrier instead (no carbs!!)
Song of the Moment:
Travellin' Tune - New song by Pilate, to be released June 2003
Currently Reading:
I'm on a Stephen King kick; just finished rereading The Shining.
Also reading the owners manual for my PocketPC
Also reading a book called "Faded Steel Heat" which is a fantasy novel written in a sort of modern vernacular style. It's neat.

Meal 2 - 2tbsp Natty PB
Meal 3 - hungarian salami, cheddar cheese, glass of Crystal Light
Meal 4 - 2 oz Macadamia Nuts

Definitely weaker here. The price for cutting.
Arnold Press

Decent... slipping a bit tho.
Lateral Raises
4x40s, 10x30s, 15x20s
Shoulders burning after this one.
Shrugs
6x105s, 6x105s
Was hard to do... winded at this point.
Seated Machine Shoulder Press
Did a heinously massive dropset down from 150 (which felt light). Did reps till was down to 60lbs on the stack and had trouble seeing straight after the set. ;)
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
Diet has been solid on quality but ass on frequency/size today. Sleeping in will to that. Ah well.
Song of the Moment:
But then I got High - Afroman

Weight:
was up a bit this morning; back to 210. I think this is good, as I was getting a bit concerned about the way my weight was plummeting. Got a lot of good food into me this weekend!
Diet:
Today:
Meal 1 - Labrada Lean Body bar
Meal 2 - can tuna, 2tbsp mayo
Meal 3 - Another Lead Body Bar. Damn work.
Meal 4 - 1/2lb ground beef patty, 1 slice process cheese, small garden salad
Supplementation:
1500mg glucosamine sulfate
Multivitamin w/ Green Superfood Concentrates
2000mg Vitamin C
200mg Coleus Forskohlii (going to try a bottle of this for a couple weeks, see if it lives up to the hype)
Workout:
to be listed later
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
Well, I finally watched Ronnie Coleman's Unbelieveable and that BLood and Guts vid from Dorian. I gotta say... both were impressive but I loved the other guy in Dorian's vid... the guy who kept barking encouragement at him. I betcha I could lift more with a guy like that working with me! :D
--
I made the BEST dinner last night.
Bacon-Wrapped Nova Scotia Sea Scallops
Blackened Chicken Breast with Portobello Mushroom & Garlic
Steamed Asparagus
Baby Spinach Salad with Stilton Cheese and Raspberry Puree Vinagrette Dressing
I only wish I had had some of that lowcarb cheesecake to follow it with but I ate the last of that while slightly baked on Saturday in what amounted to a near-religious experience.

A bit off. Couldn't make 15 on set 2.

Squats
135 x 10
225 x 5
315 x 5
225 x 10 box squats
Holy crap, was I ever weak here. 315 damn near killed me. I also almost got stuck in the hole twice on the box squats. No PRs will be set for squats until I'm done cutting, this much is clear.

14 plates x 5
18 plates x 5

Seated Lever Calf Press

While 'resting' I did 1-leg standing calf raises (to hit the gastroc more) on a bench.

Woulda been less I think but I had a Keg steak dinner last night, as I took the missus out to dinner on account of today being her birthday. I had two separate people who haven't seen me in a month comment about how lean I'm looking. I take this as a good sign. One of 'em even said "Hey look! your abs are starting to show!".
Diet:
Meal 1 - 3 egg omelet w/ ham, cheese & peppers, 3 strips bacon
Meal 2 - 1 scoop designer whey, 1 scoop Elite MEga Mass
Meal 3 - 1/4lb hamburger, 3 oz mozza cheese
Meal 4 - 3 tbsp mayo, 1 can tuna
Meal 5 - is gonna be chicken & veggies with some asiago cheese & spice/herbs, probably some salad, and oligofructose cheesecake for dessert
Supplementation:
1500mg glucosamine sulfate
Multivitamin w/ Green Superfood Concentrates
2000mg additional Vitamin C
250mg Vitamin B6
200mg coleus forskohlii
Workout:
Back and Bis
Pull Ups
BW-80 x 10, BWx7, BWx6
I better start improving on this once I don't have "my cut" to use as an excuse for not progressing. :D
Bentover Rows
135x10, 185x8, 225x6, 135x11
Not bad. Probably could have gotten a few more on the heavy set but I was being extra strict about form.
Pulldowns
150x10, 240x6
Decent enough. tried for a 7th heavy rep but I just made a strange noise and ****ing near let go of the bar by accident when I started to laugh at the noise I made.
EZ bar standing curls
115x6, 115x5
steady as she goes
Preacher bench curls
75x10, 75x8, 75x9
bis pretty fatigued
Supported T-bar rows
135x10, 205x5
eh. Shouldn't have bothered with more reps at this point. Ah well. Not bad. I really must try ElPietro's supported row thingy.
Incline DB Curls
6/6x40s, 5/5x40s, 6/6x25s
Completely spent at this point. Couldn't even CHEAT up a 7th rep with the 25lb DBs.
Overall it was a decent but not stellar workout. My mp3 player was ailing so I had no tunes, for which I blame part of the lack of intensity. I also had a visit to my esthetics friend on the weekend so I was a bit itchy. :D

Had some more of that carb-free cheesecake along with the big steaks last night. Still in keto but over on cals, I'm sure. It was worth it.
I made the mistake of smoking a small bowl before the cheesecake dessert. It made eating the cheesecake WAY better but then I watched Buffy and Angel on television and was entirely too ****ed up to stand the harsh/horror/scary/mind**** stuff they had this week. I had awful nightmares. No big though, really. I dont' mind being scared sometimes.

Sometimes, your body just wants junk food.
Sometimes, your mind just wants junk TV.
In both cases, so long as your diet doesn't completely degrade, you're fine.

1-H Reverse Triceps Pushdowns
70x10/10, 70x8/8

Cable X-Overs
just a ****load of reps, stripping down from 90 on each side to 50 or so, bombing my pecs to end the workout
I really miss my Mp3 player. Working out just ain't the same without it!!
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
Had a solid game on Saturday.
The Teams:
Adam, Phil, Glen, Ruby and I
vs
Dave, and 3 of Glen's friends plus Chris the Lawyer
5 on 5 made for some good cardio and running around. We won 11-9 in the end, and overall I was happy with my play. I had Dave covering me for much of the game so it was hard for me to get open but once they moved Chris onto me it was a feast. He bit on cuts, bit on fakes and generally let me get open; at which point the only challenge was to catch the QB's eye... ;) I had a single scoring reception but also had some massive drive-carrying yardage plays so I was happy.
On defense my lack of play time recently hurt my instincts a bit but I got into the rhythm by the second half. I gave up a couple of plays but didn't make any critical blunders and chased down a couple of balls that would have meant sure TDs for the other team. Overall our whole team really played well.
The downside is that not playing for so long plus this keto diet affecting my recovery meant I was ****ing near crippled on Sunday. This was part of the reason I chose to refeed.

awsome job with the lifts. have you been noticing any loss in strength or anything since starting the TKD?
Relentless

yes
not so much in the midrange, but I'd estimate I've lost 15-25% 'off the top' in terms of my ability to do max lifts
for instance, on shoulder day, I used to put up 75s for arnold press and 155 or so on the standing shoulder press... likewise I've backed off most of my lifts a bit
but I can see abs appearing
so who cares?

Are you stalled on this weight now? You hit 207 at the beginning of the month, yet are still at it. Have you adjusted your total caloric intake to account for your recent losses? If not that is something that is probably contributing to your stall.
Good luck anyway assface.

I just found a source of possible government funding for this docu I wanna film. I don't think it's gonna happen this summer because of the NZ trip this fall, but I'm gonna start prying into this grant thing now with a view to filming the docu next summer. Woo!
Also, one thing I've realized from this cut is that I'm not really an "XL" guy. I'm a well-filled-out "L" guy for the most part. I was buying XL clothes to cover my gut when I had one but now that I'm much leaner I've been noticing that "L" clothes fit well most of the time and when I have to go to an XL for sleeve length or whatever it's typically baggy as hell. Chest and shoulder girth is still an issue with certain types and cuts of clothing but overall I'm comfy as a Large now.

Watched 'Jackass' last night. I was alternately disgusted and reduced to hysterical laughing. Totally stupid, totally immature. But occasionally very, very funny.
So my left leg was hurting on the lateral side at the ankle and knee so I went and had Dr. Cutie Pants (the missus) check it out at her clinic last night. Turns out that when i was playing football on Saturday I nearly dislocated my left fibula. it was out of place by like 5/8" and was causing the pain and swelling
Sara popped it back in but the whole lower leg is still kinda tender. No wonder it hurt to walk! Skipped deads today and will not do legs on Friday in the hopes that I'll heal enough to play football again on Sat.

Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
Had a big demo yesterday with a major client. The end result was OK and the client had a favourable response, but my own performance in running the demo was sub par. I didn't stay focused and as a result came off seeming less smooth and professional than I wanted. Not a big deal to an outsider but I demand a lot from myself and I was pissed.
This was still on my mind when I went into the gym today and I resolved to use that frustration and anger to fuel my workout.
Then I pulled my hamstring doing squats. The frustration turned to hate. I feel that I have finally connected with my hate.
Hate is a special thing... you can try to hate everything and everyone, but that is very tiring. I hated like that for about half an hour after my workout but now I've decided to focus my hate.
I officially hate:
1. mediocrity
2. stinky people
3. the Disney Corporation
4. the colour teal
and
5. Vin Diesel
I'll add to this list when I have time but in the interim I will spend a little time each day dwelling on my hate, sharpening it to a razor edge, whetting it into a keen blade of seething negativity. My hate will be like a bleak and ugly monolith in a field of heather and bunny rabbits - stark and shocking in its severity and contrast.
Oh, and it was my 8th wedding anniversary yesterday. Yay marriage!

Sharpe's Fortress is a book in the 'Sharpe' series by Bernard Cornwell
http://www.bernardcornwell.net/index2.cfm?page=1&SeriesId=1
The series tells the story of Richard Sharpe, a double-hard bastard in the British Army in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He starts as a mere private and works up thru the ranks... by the end of Sharpe's Fortress he's an Ensign in Wellesley's army.
It's historical fiction but it's well researched and fairly well written.

Watched the series finale of BTVS last night. Yes Budiak, I know, I know, it's mindless pop culture drivel.
For the final episode, I agree with you. It was kind of a "not with a bang but a whimper" ending. I guess that's kind of Whedon's style... it was a climax and an anticlimax at the same time. But still. I was disappointed more people didn't die, I guess. :)
They also could have easily made it 2 hours... it felt rushed and lacked tension crammed into an hour. But ah well. Adding insult to injury, our local station followed it with "High School Reunion", yet another insipid ****ing reality show about people at their 10 year HS reunion (on a tropical island no less!!!). Just seeing the ads for that ****ing show made me want to hurt someone.

I was quite pleased with my workout today, despite the results being less than optimal. I accept that I'm cutting and strength suffers a bit but i'm heartened by the notion that I'm still doing good work despite being in a caloric deficit and also low-carbing it.
I noticed the veins standing out in my forearms and a nice big fat one along the top of each bicep today, which was cool... I did a set of EZ curls with a very narrow grip and it kinda smooshed by arms against my chest and made them bulge out impressively. I say impressively because some chick walking passed looked at me and smiled as I was curling and grimacing with the effort. :)
I also received an unsolicited compliment from a friend last night when i got together with a few mates; my pal Eric who hasn't seen me in a few weeks exclaimed that I was looking much leaner and that he was jealous. it made me feel good. :)

Had a nice phone convo with teh Budiak last night. He definitely sounds like he's from NorCal, and to me it was at odds with his pix; naturally with him being swarthy and eye-talian lookin', I was illogically expecting a New York accent. Damn HBO and my preconceptions. Of course, he didn't think I sounded Canadian so we were even on that score. We fell easily into conversation and I can totally see how hanging with him in person would be fun.
I'd say more, but I'm workin' my ass off today.

The Salads - Ghostbusters

For the final episode, I agree with you. It was kind of a "not with a bang but a whimper" ending. I guess that's kind of Whedon's style... it was a climax and an anticlimax at the same time. But still. I was disappointed more people didn't die, I guess. :)
They also could have easily made it 2 hours... it felt rushed and lacked tension crammed into an hour.
I really don't think BtVS is mindless drivel. In fact, I think it has more depth than about 99% of the crap that's on tv. But it's got its annoying elements. And I thought the finale was pretty mediocre.
My big question is: okay, so this Caleb guy (the very cool Nathan Fillion) is kicking Buffy's (and everybody's elses) ass up and down Sunnydale without breaking a sweat. I mean, nobody could touch him. I don't recall any villain in this show being quite so powerful. It was cool. But then in the 2nd to last and last episodes suddenly, and without explanation, Buffy is able to beat the crap out of him. WTF? Yeah, maybe it was that dumbass mystical axe (which was never really explained either) but then even Angel was able to beat Caleb up, and he didn't have any magic axe. Just f*cking retarded.
And to top it all off, Whedon didn't even use Calbb very much. He could have been cool. Frankly, the ending I was expecting (after the first ep) was for Caleb to kill Buffy and pretty much everybody else.
That's how I would have written it.

actually, I agree with you B&I, I was just exaggerating for Budiak's benefit
I think a lot of people don't even 'get' some of the humour or the message in any of Whedon's shows... they are actually a bit more intellectual than the majority of other programs
I totally agree with you about the use of Caleb... as I mentioned above I thought the whole ending story arc was kinda forced/rushed and the last ep in particular should have been a 2-hour one...

Yep. The show is brilliant and Whedon is brilliant. I hate it when people don't even watch the show first and just say "oh it's stupid" or what not. The show is extremely witty.
But the finale didn't make a lot of sense in many aspects. I was exchanging pm's with B&I and I pointed out that in the earlier episode, Buffy had the hardest time beating the ubervamp. So now these potentials with no fighting experience get slayer power and can automatically kill off these ubervamps?
As well, it doesn't really finish off with anything in regards of the Buffy character. You'd expect a finale to be a finale of the main character which explains why the show won't go on. But the finale didn't really do that and the show and the character could easily go on.

Monday, May 26, 2003
Days Remaining: 6
Sleep Last Night:
5.5 hours. But I slept in Sunday morning.
Weight:
200 even this morning.
****ing A.
Diet:
Meal 1 - Atkins Advantage lowcarb Mocha Crunch bar. Tasty.
Meal 2 - 3 egg omelet, 4 strips bacon
Meal 3 - 2 scoop Desginer Whey, 1 scoop Elite Mega Mass
Meal 4 - something else
Meal 5 - something else again
Supplementation:
1500mg glucosamine sulfate
Multivitamin w/ Green Superfood Concentrates
2000mg additional Vitamin C
250mg Vitamin B6
48mg ephedrine
400mg caffiene
Workout:
Legs
Leg Extensions
12x335, 9/9x215, 8/8x255
working sets were done 1-legged with that weight, hence the slashes... 255 went up awfully easy
Leg Curls
15x150, 10x225, 6x255 + 4x210
not bad; originally dropped back to work on form back in the day and now I feel stronger on the stack (255). will have to go 1-legged if I can keep the pace.
Box Squats
10x225
after the hammie trouble last week took it easy and started with these
Squats
10x225
just another comfy light set to test the muscles... everything seemed OK
kneeling 1-legged curl
10/10x95, 7/7x120
decent reps; probably could have done more weight but didn't want to push things
Leg Press
10x10 plates
2x18 plates + 4x16 plates + 4x14 plates
7x14 plates
Started getting sparkly vision and a bit disoriented with the first heavy reps and it just got worse so I truncated the strip set. Not sure why I was weak on this today but just felt OFF. Some personal trainer chick gawped at the 18 plates and said something, which I couldn't hear due to my mp3 player. I took one earbud out and said "what?". She repeated "That's a lot of weight." "It's getting there." I replied. But what I thought was "You have a keen grasp of the bleeding obvious you numb c***, now leave me the **** alone! HATE HATE HATE!!!"
Seated Lever Calf Press
10x4 plates, 7x5 plates, 9x5 plates
must try 6 plates on this sometime... did 1-legged standing calf raises ona bench in between sets...
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
Had a decent weekend but football was rained out, so i was bummed a bit.
Got baked and watched 'Rat Race' (John Cleese, Cuba Gooding Jr., Seth Green, Whoopi Goldberg, Rowan Atkinson, Dave Thomas, many others) on Sunday. Well it wasn't "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" exactly. But it wasn't bad. The physical humour was mostly good and if the plot was full of holes, it wasn't a big deal. My expectations were low but I was pleasantly surprised. Atkinson as a narcoleptic Italian tourist was especially funny, and Gooding was also excellent.
Then movie-watching took a turn for the worse. My wife and I are both history buffs of a sort (I used to be a Medieval History major, in fact) and we saw the cover for "Druids", noticed that it had Christopher Lambert (who we like) and also Max von Sydow and thought "hey, a story about Vercingetorix. cool.". No, in fact. Not cool. Not even adequate. The baffling title sequence involving a pan through the solar system seems to have sucked up most of the budget for things like historical accuracy... and even good screenwriting. We made it as far as the point at which some whelp explains that his name is Vercingetorix and he's the son of some chieftain in ancient Britain and blah blah blah it sucked. If you're a fan of celtic/british history, don't watch this... the inaccuracies will gall you. If you're a fan of Christopher Lambert, don't watch his, it's not his best work. If you're a fan of movies that suck, by all means get it though... it's a veritable manual of how NOT to make a decent flick. Low budget does not have to mean COMPLETE CRAP, people! Come on!!

From what I've heard, there's probably gonna be some spin-off, which won't include Buffy.
As to the uninspired finale to Buffy, I think this series of 100 questions put to Whedon says it all:
Q: Is this the final season of Buffy?
A: God, I hope so.
Q: Is this the final season of Firefly?
A: God, I hope not.
Q: Which show do you enjoy writing the most?
A: The one I'm writing now [Firefly]
Q: Which show do you enjoy directing the most?
A: See above [Firefly]

if there's a spin-off, my vote goes to Faith finding out she has a Sapphic side and hooking up with Willow
which reminds me: My favourite quote from the final story arc:
(in scene during which Buffy and Faith commisserate about how hard it is being a slayer)
"Thank God we're hot chicks with superpowers," says Faith.
"Takes the edge off," agrees Buffy.

My favorite was this bit:
Giles sits at the table with Xander. There is a pile of books and plans before us, so we can't see the map they are referring to. AMANDA looks on, and an ND potential. They are tired, but earnest.
GILES

XANDER

GILES

Demons around the perimeter... right.
So I open the door.
Widen to find ANDREW, reading from an old rule book with some handwritten notes on loose leaf. And, oh, yeah, he's wearing a red cloak, hood up.
ANDREW
You go through the door... you are
confronted by Trogdor the Burninator.

ANDREW

Seated DB OH Press
10x45, 7x65, 6x65
I found out last night that the nagging soreness in my right shoulder is probably a strained/messed up tendon. It is slightly affecting my strength and is more a pain in the ass than anything. I may leave off shoulder work for a week or three though... these sets were pretty average
Lateral DB Raises
6x35, 10x25, 12x20 + 6x17.5 + 8x15
really felt these in the right shoulder so I kept it light and went for a dropset at the end
DB Shrugs
10x100s, 10x100s
just a warmup
BB Shrugs
10x315, 4x405, 10x315, 12x225
saw sparklies after the set at 405 but cool!
rear delt machine reverse flyes
10x90, 7x150, 7x150
didn't hurt the shoulder at all but was well tired by this point
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:

Hm
had a sh!t lifting session today; my shoulder that has been bothering me was just pathetic and I couldn't even get past 3 reps DB pressing with 90s... the dips were even worse
I did alright with some flye machine flyes because that took the shoulder out of it some, and then hammered my tris with some pressdowns
but overall a strictly crap workout
I have decided to give my body a week's rest; I shall still continue cutting until the end of June but for workout purposes I shall not lift another weight until next week. At least. Cardio only for the remainder of this week. Which sux, because I really LIKE lifting. Dammit.

These days tend to happen more it seems on a cut. One small nagging thing after another, and you aren't taking in enough raw materials for everything to be attended to adequately by your body, so in the end, it just multiplies until something gets bad enough it seems to ruin a workout.

Yes but we both agreed on the before pics. I explicitly stated my before pics and where they were coming from before we agreed on the contest. And I was the same weight in the pics as the start date of the contest. So pfft!
I will just blame your technological incompetence on the fact that you live in Barrie, and leave it at that.
ElPietro
06-04-2003, 07:50 AM
I checked to make sure, it's page 34 of my journal where we agree on the contest. It is the 3rd week of february. I mention that I will use pics from a couple months ago as my before pics, but in reality, they are less old than that. I also mention in that same post that I believe I look worse then then I did when the pics were taken. So if anything, according to that post, it was better for you, for me to use those pics, rather than fresh before pics, in an even worse state.
Just wanted to make sure that I *did* in fact say when my before pics would be from, so there wouldn't be any disputes.

Just wanted to say again, good job on the all the hard work. Are you going to try to get down to 190 now before your next bulk?
Relentless
06-05-2003, 11:40 AM
Yeah... 190 or whatever else it takes to go from "flat stomach with abs peeking thru" to "six pack". Or at least the best I can do by July 1.
I plan to start a clean bulk in Sept, and try to get back up to 215-200 or so but maintaining the lower BF%.

no worries frannie; it was nice to catch up with you yesterday
in other news, I was _195_ this morning; i attribute this partly due to continued discipline and partly due to the fact that I play football for 2 hours in the sun yesterday and then (like a fool) decided to play soccer for another two hours after that. :) I was dehydrated and starving to the point of dizziness afterwards despite copious consumption of gatorade. I didn't feel right till I got to Jack Astor's afterwards and had a pound of wings, a steak, and a bowl of hearty soup.

The Final Cut: June 2003, 198->190 or less
Monday, June 9, 2003
Days Remaining: 21
Sleep Last Night:
5 hours. But I slept in Sunday morning. Till like, 2pm.
Weight:
194.5 this morning. **** you, adipose tissue!!!!
Diet:
Meal 1 - Atkins Advantage lowcarb Mocha Crunch bar. Tasty.
Meal 2 - 2 scoop Desginer Whey, 1 scoop Elite Mega Mass
Meal 3 - can of tuna, 2 tbsp mayo, veggies
Meal 4 - Labrada Lean Body Bar
Meal 5 - 1/2lb ground beef, some cheese and some veggies, with a "Pete's Tofu" tub of tofu for dessert
Supplementation:
1500mg glucosamine sulfate
Multivitamin w/ Green Superfood Concentrates
2000mg additional Vitamin C
250mg Vitamin B6
48mg ephedrine
400mg caffiene
Workout:
Back and Bis
Chins
8xBW, 7xBW
decent but nothing special; been stalled in this area for a while
ISO-row
10x4 plates, 8x6 plates, 7x6 plates
could have gone for reps at 8 plates but instead focused on slow controlled and squeezing reps at 6 plates.
EZ Bar Curls
7x115, 5x115
no cheating, no sway... just concentration and biceps
EZ Curl bar platoons
7-7-6x75, 7-6-0x75
couldn't complete the last squad in the first platoon, and died on the second part of partials in the next one. Guess this means my biceps are being worked hard. Good. I think. The happy little veins atop my biceps made a reappearnce during these sets. I like those veins; they look cool.
bentover Rows
10x135, 6x225
got sloppy on the heavy set; I was starting to feel gassed by this point
Cable Curls
8x150, 7x150, 15x100
Narrow Grip Pulldowns
10x150, 4x225, 12x120
after the 12, I did some exercises for my midback, forget what it's called but it's like doing a lat pulldown without bending your arms.. it does a bit in your back that doesn't see a lot of work. Supposed to be good for you. :D
Rants/Comments/Whining/Misc:
Football was good on the weekend. I got to play against my buddy Dan so it was challenging and fun. We played soccer for an hour or an hour and a half AFTER football, which was almost a mistake. I hadn't had enough to eat, and after I drove home I was walking up the stairs to the condo and I damn near passed out. I was ok after I got some food into me but it was trippy.

The interesting thing about this email is that it indirectly implies that you will lose your penis. I'm about to embark upon a little journey of that nature myself and I'm going to do my best not to let that happen. It might be a little tougher to keep progressing but I like to think nothing is impossible. Even though you are cutting, the lifts are still looking really good.
From what I've read from others, once the cut gets started and beyond the first few weeks things get a little easier in regards to making progress again. Did this hold true for you over most of your lifts?

on a completely unrelated note, I would like to mention that I had the best hamburgers in the world last night
why were they the best?
because I was cunning enough to sautee some portabello mushrooms, onions and fresh garlic in butter beforehand, along with some choice strips of bacon. This was used as a garnish along with generous slices of swiss cheese to make the burgers into minor feats of gastronomic delight

I especially agree with the 'these people need to be shot' part. Full agreement.
I like when you are walking away and performing the task on which they were instructing you, and doing it flawlessly, and they continue to explain as if you are hanging on their every word. This happens mostly when working with computers, because nerds require someone to explain things to or else their lives are totally meaningless.
Those burgers sound pretty good but you know, not all of us are cutting on grease. I actually think I could look in the mirror and see myself getting fatter.
Might be interesting to get a camera to shoot someone every half hour after they eat a package of ramen and an ice cream cone and see how long it takes for them to become visibly bloated.

DUDE, Everytime I see your avatar I look and say to myself you've got lats to spare....my question is do you emphasize training them in particular or are these simply your muscle group that seems to have responded best to training? I can only imagine the problems you might have with all the extra material at the waist for the shirt sizes you wear.
Relentless
06-10-2003, 02:16 PM
LOL! Thanks!
my avatar has the advantage of good light, a flared-lats pose and such
I don't pay any special attention to lats.. they get worked the same as everything else. I do LIKE working them so maybe they get a little extra lovin'... my rowing strength is pretty decent but my chins/pullups are more average... go figure.
I have recently had several shirts tailored to fit my new, tapered torso however. Part of it is just that in North America, if you're buying an 18" neck shirt, they assume you may need to fit 40"+ of waist in there and cut the cloth accordingly.
however, $15 and a few days' waiting after dropping 'em off at the tailor and suddenly my old 'fat' shirts have a new lease on life. :D
Budiak
06-10-2003, 06:26 PM
Seriously Cal. The guys who make shirts dont think that a guy may have a 36 inch waist but have a near 50 inch chest and a big neck, too. No, if your chest is 50 inches, its got to be blubber and they compensate by making the shirt waist big enough to make a tent for you and yours.
Same with pants, which is why I was so happy I found some 36/29s at the store. If you've got a big waist, you're obviously 7 feet tall. **** you, Calvin Klein.

And as of the weekend, my chest is only 47" now. :( ah well, at least it's leaner.
rookiebldr
06-11-2003, 06:45 AM
It seems the standard suit size difference from waist to chest is about 8" as well. I.e. 36" waist should be a 44" chest for suits. Ugh, this used to be a problem for me when my chest didn't measure up and my waist was clearly to big. Now I have the reverse situation, but I'm not complaining. :)

went and saw a friend of mine perform in a small production of A Midsummer Night's Dream on Friday. It was brilliant. My buddy GEoff had the role of Oberon AND of Theseus and he did really well.
The rest of the cast was quite strong and they had this chick cast as Puck that I thought was bloody brilliant. The mechanicals and comedy bits were hilarious and well timed and generally the whole thing served to inspire me as well as entertain me. I gotta get back into acting.

well, I just got my pictures back from my vacation and I must say
I look better than I did last summer. I have much more mass in my upper body and arms, especially. I look BIG. I look MUSCULAR.
But I am still a BIG FAT MESS. Ok, that's exaggerating, but I am still carrying waay too much BF and it's pissing me off.
As such, I will now get a grip on my diet, and I will cut hard until I can see abs and the start of striations. 10~12% BF is probably the goal. Period. I'm not necessarily gonna go for competition form, but I am gonna get my shiznit together.
No excuses. No slacking off. I will get my BF tested ASAP and construct a more strictly controlled diet where I won't necessarily obsess over every single calorie, but I will have a meal plan and a vision for what I want to eat going into each week.
Being big and strong is no longer enough. I will be big, strong and hard, dammit!
Hard to believe that this was less than a year ago. I was browsing through the older parts of my journal and came across this... I'm really chuffed (to steal an Aussie word that Franji uses often that I rather like) that things turned out so well. I took longer to get started on a real cut than I'd thought, but once I did, it worked out rather well. I'm damn close to 12% now and look radically different from what I did last summer.
I've been thinking about what I want to achieve this fall, and given that I expect to spend some time on the beach in Oz with Sara and Franji and whoever in december, my rough plan is this:
Summer: continue being lean and lifting a bit; may try some of that Lipoderm-Y stuff just for kicks. Give my right shoulder time to heal (it's still impinged somewhat).
September-Early November: Clean bulk... increasing calories, taking in some more carbs (but not crazy carbs) and continuing to avoid alcohol and other needless carbs.
Early November-Early December: if I've gained what I consider to be unacceptable BF over the bulk, then cut to lose it. Otherwise, continue a slow, clean bulk. I also want to see progression on my lifts. Partly due to on-again off-again cutting over the last year, several of my lifts have not significantly progressed. This will change.
Mid December: travel to Brisbane, rock that town, have fun
it's a simple plan. But I like it.

The Summer of (no) Love (Handles)
A Chronicling of Callahan's first summer in nearly a decade that will be spent without love handles. It's mostly over now but don't let that stop ya. ;)
Date:
Monday, July 14
Training:
The rule for the rest of this summer is that I must progress. I am not really cutting per se anymore; I'm happy to maintain approximately the same BF% I'm at. However, I must progress in my lifts. Progression (after this first week) will be indicated after each set.

Incline DB Bench
12x40s, 8x70s, 6+1x70s
Dammit. My right shoulder is still giving me grief. I'm getting it looked at this Friday so hopefully it'll get sorted. It's not PAINFUL exactly. It just twinges and occasionally loses power. This affects shoulder movements and shoulder-supported movements.

Flye Machine
150x12, 180x7, 120x13

triceps were pretty pumped after this. Which was cool.

God, is it the ****ing 14th already?
Jeez. I think I'm going to try one of those burgers. Also, speaking of, I was interested in what kinds of cheeses you recommend there. I dont mean like the american, cheddar, and swiss, etc. What kind of cheese do you really, really like, that doesnt come in 'singles'?
I actually saw something at the store that was kind of expensive, but it looked incredible. It was fresh buffalo mozz that was rolled with proscuitto, olive oil, and a bunch of other spices in it. It was like 6.50 for 6 ounces that would have provided 40 fat, 60 protein, and like 4.5 carbs. It was too much. Looked damn good though. Maybe if I get a job..ever...I'll check it out.

if I'm going to eat a burger, I generally prefer a sharp-tasting cheese with it...cheddar is an easy choice
but if you want to try something different:
Jarlsberg is easy enough to find, full but mild flavour. Yay for Norwegian cheeses. It's sweeter than some cheeses. Melts pretty well.
Stilton, the british blue cheese, is very sharp and tangy but can be good. You almost NEED a pint of stout to have with your burger if you're gonna put stilton on it.
You might also simply try imported cheddar. I know there are some interesting old Canadian cheddars... Black Diamond is a big name brand but maybe not the most 'exclusive'. Most likely to be available. Tracking down some nice 2-3 year old sharp white cheddar could be fun.
As a final alternative, why not find out if there are any mennonite or hutterite or other Luddite-type commune/farm/communities within easy driving distance. Buying freshly made cheese from the dudes in the plain black clothes can be highly rewarding.

had a chance to lift out at Bill Jamison's farm yesterday along with ElPietro... although he seemed to want to call ElP Steve all the time, his advice was sound and offered on a range of topics.
Bill's sons as well as one of the PLs he's training were there in his barn/gym and I gotta say I felt especially hardcore not only for driving out to the boonies to learn more about lifting but also due to the Spartan nature of the gym he had there. No mirrors, no yuppies in spandex. Just iron and willpower. Yeah baby!
We did a bit of work in all three core lifts, and Bill (as well as his sons and trainee) observed and chatted with us.
Some of the key things I learned:
- I keep my arms too close to my body on bench... I need to get 'em out to a 45 degree angle. ElP has the opposite problem; he has 'em too wide/high.
- for squatting, construction boots with a bit of a heel are much better than running shoes. I wouldn't have believed it till I saw it
- I need to take a narrower grip on squats and get those elbows back and up! ElP has some flexibility issues there so he has a harder row to hoe than I do.
- I need to turn my toes out for everything, squats, deads, bench.
- Big Chest!!!
- My deads aren't bad but again there were a couple minor things that I think will really add up... the big breath and then the little dip with the hips makes a huge difference

Well, I learned a lot that's for sure. Just some tips on getting tighter on bench made things feel stronger, also deadlifting felt better with some small tips. Squats by far will I think benefit the most when I can get some shoulder flexibility going.
He said you are welcome to go anytime Jeff, so if you are interested, I may go back in a month or so, to see what I should be working on and what has improved. Bill was very good at explaining the technicalities of the lifts, and offered some good advice to tweak everything.

Leg workout. I'll figure out fancy formatting and all that **** later. Basically, I have waffled around about what I want to do next now that I'm much leaner. Had thought hard about cutting more but I'm sick of losing strength. Officially, I'm starting clean bulk as of now. Clean food, slight caloric surplus, focus on progression from week to week with weights and reps.
Leg Curls 10x150, 7x255, 6x255
Leg Extensions 12x335, 8/8x255, 8/7x255 (sets at 255 done 1-legged)
Squats 10x135, 5x225, 1+failx275
I am now quite certain that all my previous squatting was garbage. Died in the hole on my second rep at 275 while following the form and depth as advocated by Bill Jamison. I'll work up from here I guess.
Kneeling Leg Curl 7/7x125, 8/8x125
Leg Press 10x450, 3x720
Lost some strength here as well; focus was going deep and had a slight pause at the bottom on the heavy reps... I'll work back up from here
Calf Raises on Leg Press 15x450, 15x450
almost too easy; will try with more weight next time
Seated Level Calf Pree 15x180, 13x180
dammit. Died at the end here.

I'm going to have a PT and/or MD check it out, as the ol' chiro/RMT has helped but hasn't helped enough... if needed I guess I can take time off but I don't WANT to dammit!!!!

leg day
it sucked
why?
I hurt my right knee again. I have it figured out now though, I think...
I know the ACL was messed up from football before, but then when i thought I reinjured it last summer (at about this time, ironically), I had just finished some heavy leg curls/extensions before beginning squatting.
I think that the heavy loads (355 is the stack on the leg XT machine and I did 2 sets of 6 (each leg) 1-legged with 255.
I think that the leg XT machine puts my knee in a vulnerable position and the heavy heavy weight ****s it up. I'm inclined to think it may be the patellar tendon...
So I'll knock off legs till next week then see how it feels.
I also did some lateral raises and some shoulder presses with a pair of 35lbs, just to give the shoulders a bit of a test. The right shoulder aches a bit but nothing like it did before. The slight discomfort tells me I need to rest it more though. MY wife has also given me some exercises to do to strengthen the interior of the joint.
The kicker: I've given up on upper body for this month to give my right shoulder time to heal. Hm. I could wind up hardly lifting at all this month. Nice.
The net result is that I'm also giving up leg XT and leg curls
going to start leg day with squats and go from there...

Sorry to hear about the knee. I know it ain't easy. I had some problems with my knees before and walking lunges eventually straightened all that out. Granted mine was a case of tendonitis and not something wrong with my ACL so who knows. I'd recommend trying them if you can though because they're just an awesome leg exercise.

Do barbell walking lunges. Nobody should say anything to a guy walking around with a bar across his back and at least a 45lb plate on each side. It looks intimidating. Make it 2 plates per side and you'll get some stares.
Just don't wear that pink unitard when you do these or they really do looking flaming. :p

That sucks about the knee bro. Injuries in general suck. Don't rush it though. Don't let Will fool ya on the leotard, he lifts much heavier when he's wearing his. ;)

Just got back from T3.
My review:
It was a visually interesting way to spend studio-level budget. But I got the sense that the movie was more about the SFX and Cameron/Arnold getting paid than it was about plot/story.
It's a shame, really . . . they could have done something new and interesting and instead it came off like "Terminator 2.5, revision B".
Kristanna Loken does a neat Robert Patrick impression... for all her scenes...

weekend update

have been back on proper keto diet for a while now. Immediately noticed leaning-up. I think I was just holding water from eating carbs and salty crap again...
In other news, I had a visit from God.
Well, at least God's caterer.

Now the pork loin has some carbs, but the Pot Roast and the Striploin are carb-free. And they fall apart at the touch of a fork, they're so ****ing tender.
A *bit* salty. But given that I got it from God's Caterer, I'm inclined to be forgiving.

Updates:
Pilate:
Pilate is doing very well with their single, it is getting a lot of request and is starting to move into heavier rotation. Through Todd, I've learned more than I ever wanted to about how the radio stations and record companies basically decide what is played and how often, and how restrictive and stupid it all seems. Aside from the all-request nooner and weekend mornings, DJs only have like 1 slot per hour that they can pick the song themselves. So much for music being 'for the people'. Anyway, if you live in the Toronto area, definitely call up or email CFNY 102.1 and request "Into Your Hideout" by Pilate. that song f*n rocks!! CD comes out Sept 23.
Pain:
Shoulder and knee are both healing nicely and I expect 'em to be good to go for September. No pain through ROM on shoulder now and knee tendon is sorted out. I'm almost definitely gonna do HST for a cycle in Sept-Oct after the month of no workouts.
Weekend:
My brother was down from Ottawa on the weekend. Did lots of fun activities -- went to the beach, went to Casino Rama, watched movies, cruised around in the Jeep, etc, etc. Had a blast. He even came and played football on Saturday. Considering he was WELL hungover at the time, he played quite well. he's always been a much better natural athlete than I am, but he's a little out of shape now so it was kind of nice to be able to outplay him. I even picked him off when he took a turn at QB for the other team. ;)
Franjilicious: Good work. You'll have to come to Brisbane for a couple of entrainments. Sara just recently completed her advanced certification in NSA. She's really getting very talented at the technique.

Hiya Heather, thanks for stopping by.
Update: Played football today, had a good game in the gorgeous sunshine, while fighter jets did aerobatics overhead (something to do with the long weekend... airshow?)
played a very good game, tight coverage, good reads, hauled in a pair of TDs and knocked a few balls down, which is good. Also ran down people on kicks quite well. it was 4 on 5, which was shorthanded but it opened up the field a lot and made everyone run more instead of playign zone like last week.
going to start testing maxes for HST tomorrow; heading into the gym to test 15s, I think. Not sure exactly how to go about testing a max at each one and i suspect the later maxes will suffer from the early max testing but that's all part of the fun. After a month of 'strategic deconditioning' I'm rarin' to go.
