the safety razor is better then any of that generic multi blade ****. I highly recommend it. It will take some getting used to but its well worth it. If you are going through the trouble of getting a good blade, be sure to get some quality cream and perhaps a shaving brush too. The art of shaving is something that mankind has lost touch with. As for shaving cream I would recommend Zirh, and if you wanna go all out and get the brush (which u should) here is a decent model.

Why is it called a safety razor? Less cuts?

FWIW I suck at shaving.

While I'm here...I use a Mach 3. I agree with the poster about that said get a brush. I use pre-shaving oil and shaving shaving cream from Art of Shaving. As well as an art of shaving brush. So nice. Doesn't rip my skin to hell. Luckily my dad and his gf like to give this kind of stuff for gifts. I wouldn't spend that much $ on myself.

Schick Quattro Titanium for me. I use it on my face and head all at once. My facial hair is pretty coarse, so I get about two shaves per cartridge before it's no good anymore. At $13 for a 4 pack, this is the reason I only shave face and head every 5 days. It has to be those, though. I can chew through two BIC's in one shave. :(

The Quattro is great cartridge, though. I've tried several, and it's my favorite.

I give it 5 whiskers.

I think it's called a safety razor because when it was invented in the late 1700s they added safety bars instead of just an open blade like the cut throat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_razor

what do all you gurus suggest for shaving a head bald? i did it before, but just used shampoo and lathered it... do you suggest shaving cream or what?

Shave your head with an electric hair clipper. Use shaving cream and a razor (I used a MACH 3) to finish it off. Don't use a brand new blade on your head. Use your fingers to feel where to go over again. Shave on all sides and directions.

Use electric trimmers so its as short as possible, wet your hair with warm water, put in shaving cream and let it sit for a few minutes, then go to town with one of these babies- http://www.headblade.com/

I use a mach 3 as well, but I'm considering investing in a nice self-cleaning electric razor. My facial hair grows in funny directions and I get a lot of razor burn, especially on my neck, from razors blades.

Currently I am using a Philips electric shaver that I got from Costco. It works alright, but if I need to look extra clean I use my Mach 3 razors. I am thinking about buying one of those $100 razors that come with a cleaning device. Disposable razors look cheap but it adds up when you got to keep replacing them.

Poll:
Mach 3

Those talking about razor burn and such:
I had googled the topic to death and read the numerous threads/replies on here. I tried everything possible (shaving in the shower, dry shaving, rinsing my face with cold water, hot water, etc, etc, etc).

I finally went to Walmart and spent $6 on a cheap brush, and $3 on a little container of shaving soap. I began taking hotter than normal showers, and instead of washing my face last, I began to wash it first (giving the pores more time to open). After I shower, I lather up the brush and apply to my face. I shave top-down in all areas, no more than 3-4 inches per stroke, no more than one stroke per rinse. My neck began to clear up a little.

However, the biggest change came from TendSkin (my gf gets electrolysis done and mentioned my problem to the one who does it, she gave her several samples of this stuff). I apply it after every shave, it stings like a bastard, and it works. My ingrown hairs and razor bump have 90% disappeared. I ended up buying a bottle from the lady for $15. I got it about 4 months ago and I've only used about 1/4th.

To those who have *good* brushes:
Where did you get them, how much can I expect to spend, what is it made out of?

I use the Gillette Fusion. I used to use the Mach 3, but found that the closer spaced blades of the Fusion didn't rip out as much hair when I forgot to shave for a few days.

I use a Mach3 power for my daily shaver.

I also have an antique (my grandfathers) straight razor, and an old brass razor that takes double sided razor blades, they are good for a change but need alot more careful attention than the disposable

Ive got a Braun electric. Im one of those people who gets serious face issues from a blade. Ive tried everything suggested as others have mentioned...even bought one of those expensive badger hair brushes. It was the best shave Ive ever had, but my face felt dry and frail all day and I would have ingrown problems, etc.

Back to an electric razor :(

If you're talking for the head, that's a lot of work. I hope you do all that starting with a full head of hair. I can shave 5 days growth, head AND face, and take a shower in less than 20 minutes. I just use body wash to shave. I do wash my head first. Hair cuts much easier if it's clean. I only use shaving cream if I have to do any touch up work at the sink.

And I've never tried a head blade, but I've got a friend that doesn't use his. He said it's a gimmick. I just can't imagine having to tap my hair out of that thing. My razor clogs constantly, and it doesn't rinse away.

Whoever was talking about razor bumps...I use some Nivea stuff that comes in a little pump. It's great. I only get maybe one per shave these days, and that's probably only because I have to put lotion on my head and face every day and it's probably clogging things up.

use an electric shaver and your razor burn will be 10x worse buddy. Wet shaving is THE MOST effective way to reduce irritation and get the tightest, smoothest shave possible. You just gotta do it right, and the problem nowadays is most people dont. Now, a lot of people can get away with not doing right if they have the skin that can handle it, and i envy those bastards. But like you, I have very sensitive skin. I thought my irritation and redness would never go away, but you seriously SERIOUSLY need to invest in some quality shaving equipment to clear up the face. By quality shaving equipment i do not mean an electric razor, I mean a good razor with excellent cream (Zirh) and a shaving brush. Exfoliating in the shower beforehand also helps. And remember, you should not be trying to get ALL your hair off in one pass. Beard reduction is the way to go. In other words, lather up with some shaving cream and shaving in one direction going down. It will cut the hair short, but there will still be some left. At this point, rinse with hot water, then later up again and shave in another direction (like going from the outside of the face inwards). At this point you should have a tight shave, and if wish to, you can make a third pass (in another direction).

Trying to get all of it at once causes irritation and redness. Also, not being exfoliated causes irritation and redness because the blade latches on to dead skin cells. And remember to HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE! Its absolutely crucial while shaving. I like to consider myself a shaving affecienado (sp?) and one of the few and proud last remaining practitioners of the manly art of shaving haha. Follow this advice and you will see an improvement in your skin in a few weeks time.

You're probably right, I'm not the best shaver. I'll try to be a bit more meticulous and see how it goes. Thanks for the tips.

I use the Gillette Mach 3 razors especially when shaving my head which I normally do every 3 days at the most. They dont seem to gash my head open like disposables do. I also use an electric shaver sometimes for my face, but imo they are still not as good as having a wet shave

There is no choice for Schick Quattro Titanium, so I'll just type it here and not skew the poll.

Of course I got it for the name, I have a good deal of titanium reinforcing my spine, but I've honestly never used a better razor.
