Saw this on another board and figured it would be interesting to see.

I started off doing bodybuilding - type training, stopped all together for about a year or more losing 40+ lbs, and then came back to build myself bigger and stronger than ever.

1999 - Just after turning 16 yrs old, training for a little over a year and 170 lbs:

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j198/tmutaffis/26.jpg

2002 - Now 18 years old, training for 3+ years and dieted down to around 205 lbs

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j198/tmutaffis/25.jpg

2004 - Stopped training all together, 20 years old and 175 lbs

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j198/tmutaffis/24.jpg

2006 - Started training again in January, six months later back to 193 lbs. Entered my first strongman contest:

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j198/tmutaffis/Truckpull3resized.jpg

2007 - A year and a half later won the National Championships in the 200 lbs weight class, about 210 lbs after the contest:

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j198/tmutaffis/vegas.jpg

2008 - Peak bodyweight around 225 lbs, took 3rd at NAS Nationals this year in the next weight class up (Overall LW, competitors up to 250 lbs - 48 total qualified and competed this year)

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j198/tmutaffis/BeastDeadlift.jpg

Dieted down to around 215 lbs after this contest...

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j198/tmutaffis/NASWarmUpDay2-1324.jpg

Now am around 220 lbs and not as lean - looking at really stepping it up in 2009 and gaining some serious strength while keeping good hypertrophy.

Impressive Tom, I would be the first to say or jump on the band wagon that you obviously have great genes. Then after seeing the pic of you at 20 yrs old, I might just have to work harder. ha ha

awesome pics.....to go from that pic of you at 175 to the one at 193 six monthes later is amazing......i am impressed and confused as to what i am doing wrong...i have not seen the kind of results in 4.5 years that you made in 6 monthes....i agree with the previous statement you must have awesome genetics or awesome supp's. Also to look how you looked at age 16 after only 1 year training is amazing. either i am too old or i need to take a serious look at how i am training. did you get that much mass by the typical bulk/cut cycles? i am wondering because you seem to be fairly lean in all your pics. maybe you just didnt post any of you in a "bulk" phase.

Makes me think supplements and diet are more a key than most believe.

Here is my progress pictures.

(never worked out. June of 2005. Weight: 105lbs)
http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/4739/tinype6.jpg

(after about 4 months of lifting. Gained abit of weight. december 2006. Weight:135lbs)
http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/8818/tiny2vb1.jpg

(about a year later. August 2007. Weight: 165lbs)
http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/9577/tiny3wl2.jpg

(January 2008. Just got over 3 months of having mono. I lost about 20-25lbs. Weight: 145lbs)
http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/5425/tiny4ii9.jpg

(August 2008. After competing in my first powerlifting competition. Training all summer for football season. Weight: 190lbs)
http://img367.imageshack.us/img367/8124/tiny5ov6.jpg

Right now i'm about 180lbs. I tore my rotator cuff and labrum playing football which had me out of the gym for almost 2 months. I did lose weight during the season because of all the conditioning stuff we were doing.

I was able to make very good progress when first starting out but as you can see it takes a lot of hard work and discipline to get where you want to be. When I stopped training all together and broke the diet I still maintained some strength - but people would never believe me when I showed them pictures from before or told them about some of my lifts.

The biggest thing in being able to achieve those results was that I already knew what I needed to about optimal training, recovery, and diet. Along with that I had a good strength base from being so strong previously and it enabled me to train with heavy weights to build size.

As for Bulk/Cut cycles most of my training in 2006 and 2007 was geared around strongman, I was trying to gain as much size as possible but would still have to do some dieting and "cutting" in order to keep myself in the 200 lbs weight class. Was competing about every two months so I could bulk for a month and then maintain for a few weeks, then diet for one to two weeks. All the while I was always eating clean foods, just sometimes would bump the calories and add in some good 'mass agents' like skim milk and natural peanut butter. That is probably why my bodyfat never got out of control, coupled with some pretty intense training.

People used to joke that I looked like a bodybuilder and that was all done through diet, since the majority of my training was heavy strongman work (powerlifts and olympic lifts in the gym, events on the weekends).

I think you mis understood his post. I believe he is saying that he knew the basics of what worked and what didn't, and learned the rest of it by figuring out what works for him.

Hmm, let's see.

Here I was before I started, at around 130lbs.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b251/jfindon/1004042orig.jpg

Here is a pretty recent comparison, probably around 183lbs in this one:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b251/jfindon/IMG_40452.jpg

Here again I'm 130lbs:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b251/jfindon/before1.jpg

I think I was around 150 in this one (around the time I joined here):

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b251/jfindon/DSCN6358-3.jpg

And this was about 188lbs or so:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b251/jfindon/IMG_4057-1-1.jpg

I've yet to cut.

I only consider myself having worked out seriously for a little over a year. I got my power rack last October and that's when I finally started seeing gains, I stayed at 160lbs for a year or two and never really got anywhere with the standard bench I had before (Sears quality **** you see everywhere). Then I joined here and started stuffing my face more and more and stuck to my workout plan. Before I got my rack I would routinely skip deadlifts and I couldn't squat at all, so all I was doing was benching, shoulder work, and biceps.

berfles your thick as hell dude. great progress.

Thanks man, I feel like I'm finally getting somewhere. We have similar goals and stats, I'm trying to get to 200lbs by the year's end (no promises though, last week I gained nothing) and probably up to 215-220 and do a small cut.

Your change is big too, much thicker.

resistance - your coming along bro. keep working hard.

I've started a journal for myself yesterday and I started to record how many reps I did so next workout I can try to get 1 more. I've kept a bodyfat percentage and lean body mass journal too and I've gained like 5 pounds so far lol. *pats self on back*

thats excellent my friend. even if no one stops in, you can use to for motivation from yourself by doing like u said. i just have 4 or 5 people that stop in regularly, not a whole fan club. but those 4 or 5 are enough to keep me motivated!

sorry I'm not really understanding what you mean "people that stop in regularly". Do you mean they go to the gym with you and see how much you've progressed or that they look at your journal and encourage you to keep going.

jed

the second one. just people that check it once a day or whenever they get on and see how your workout went and provide motivation.

Time for me to play! Here is 10 years of progress. Isn't technology awesome? I didn't really start lifting/training consistently until I went to college. It was mostly off and on crap through high school. Face is painted over or covered thanks to certain people that like to play with photoshop. Thanks. Lol.

Freshman year HS. ~110-120.
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x64/RealTraining/1.jpg

Senior year HS ~130-140:
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x64/RealTraining/2.jpg

End of freshman year college ~160 (and to think I was dumb enough to have a GF... ****!):
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x64/RealTraining/3.jpg

Start of Junior year college, where I learned how to bulk (aka eat)!! 205
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x64/RealTraining/4.jpg

Now, about 4 years after the above pic. 240 (and a LBM of about 200, before anyone talks about gaining fat, just think about that for a sec):
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x64/RealTraining/5.jpg

In between the last two I did a 20 pound cut from 220 to 200 for a SM comp, so from 200 to 240 was a fun time.

ALL HAIL KHAN! Enjoy!

HAHAHAHA @Berfles mate that is just ridiculous.
Reminds me of the Dr Nick quote from the simpsons
"Oh look it's Mr Mcgregg! The man with a leg for an arm and an arm for a leg!"
I'm sure your legs are big as well man but it looks like you transplanted your legs on to your shoulders haha.

(about a year later. August 2007. Weight: 165lbs)
http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/9577/tiny3wl2.jpg

(January 2008. Just got over 3 months of having mono. I lost about 20-25lbs. Weight: 145lbs)
http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/5425/tiny4ii9.jpg

(August 2008. After competing in my first powerlifting competition. Training all summer for football season. Weight: 190lbs)

Looking thicker mate, arms look like they've gained some mass.
Well everywhere looks bigger but arms seem especially bigger.

I took the pic below this afternoon at my gym locker room. Perhaps I had a pump, but I only trained shoulders. As you can see, I have a slightly bigger chest, and less body fat. That's me at 1.87m, 89.5kg / 6'2 @ 197 lbs.

I guess I deleted whatever photos I had in here. These aren't true starting points. These were a number of years in. I started in the 140's as a senior in HS. These are just after college graduation in the mid 160s. The second set is now in the low 190's. Still a long ways to go.

January of '09 - I had been lifting for years, but I never really cared about diet and I wasn't doing great things in the weight room, let myself go abit after I got hurt in spring ball for college football. This is 2.5 years after the injury:
