View Full Version : Leg drive for short guys

Hey guys. When watching videos of the elite lifters and reading the articles on here I know leg drive is important for benching but what do you shorter guys do. I try and dig my toes into the ground bent very far back towards my head because when I am flat-footed I can't seem to get any "push".

Anyone have any good helpful tips for this?

im 5'7 ish and have no real probably driving with my feet on bench. check your form ? it also took me alittle while to learn how to properly use them.

I train with a girl smaller than you and she can still drive her heels. It's a bit harder being shorter, but possible. Look at the video Vinnie just posted.

Aren't you allowed to put plates under your feet or something?

yeah, you could use blocks if you're really short

I feel the same way, im also short at 5'7 and i feel like im not getting enough leg drive. im gonna try different shoes maybe something with a bigger sole. im hoping it will help my arch better as well.

I'm 5'0" and sometimes do use plates under my feet...I'm trying to go more flat footed (now that I know I can keep some arch even flat footed)...I think it does help keep tighter and with pressing thru the heels. I ask them to put plates down in a meet and never had an issue with it.

You can find sneakers and boots on the net with around a 3" lift.

I have a pair of old steel toe boots that have a good size sole, I'm gonna try those.

Do you know of a specific website that sells those? Well I guess I can run a google search!

Even if you can't get your heels on the ground, you should still be driving them down toward the floor.

On the toes, I like to get on the pads of my to big toes and push my heals to the floor.

Then try to push my knees back, like your trying to lock them. Not possible but try to push
them to lock.

Out of the bottom, make sure you get your head back to the bench and push AWAY from
the bar.

Flatfooted, I like to spread the floor like your squatting.

Push your knees out and lock in your ass cheeks.

I like placing my feet very wide for flatfooted benching.
That way I can drive as hard as I want and my butt doesnt
come off the bench.

I have a 700 vid on my website that shows how I am on my toes.

And I have a 633 flatfooted vid(uspf) that shows my tech there.

I would bring the vids here, but I am too computer stupid. lol
