In watching videos of several of the better dead lifters I have noticed that there is a huge variety of stances, from super wide sumo to conventional with heels only a few inches apart. I am just curious how people here set up for dead lifts in terms of distance between the feet and why.

Sumo I set up feet a couple inches from the plates

Conventional, I get into a stance narrow enough to still be conventional, wide enough my wide doesn't get in the way :D

I only pull conventional and my feet are about 7-8inches apart, with toes slightly pointed out.

I pull sumo in competition and I usually set my shins right at the rings on the bar. My conventional stance is about shoulder width.

Conventional, and my feet are the same width as if I was about to jump straight up.

Has anyone experimented with feet width for conventional deadlifts in particular. I generally have my feet about 6-8 inches apart but have been thinking of moving them out to shoulder width or even a little farthur to try and get a better carryover from my squat (which, withouth gear, is getting close to surpassing my deadlift).

I deadlift with a shoulder width stance, any more narrow hits my quads alittle much and wider sumo style just feels wrong for me.

When I started to deadlift, I tried a bunch of feet widths and spent some time with the couple that felt best. I also videotaped a lot at first to check my form changes with the different foot placements.

Same here,6-8 on the heels with a toe to toe distance of 15-16 inches

I keep my legs just inside my arms. Feet angled slightly outside helps alot as well.

I center my shins about 1 inch inside of the knurling on a standard deadlift bar. Ive tried various stances and like this one the best.

If i put them to close, I dont get good drive through my quads because I cant bend down as far.

I do both conventional and sumo style deadlifts. Sumo my feet end up being fairly close to the plates where as with conventional it is roughly shoulder width. Basically where I find it most comfortable, to tell you the truth I don't even think about it.
