I have been reading the Westside Barbell Book Of Methods and it says it isn't necessary to do max effort work every week. Can I if I want to or will it be bad for me if I do?

You don't have to work up to a max single all the time. If you're feeling beat up you could just work up to some heavy triples or even substitue a ME day for more of a repetition effort day once in a while.

We do ME work every week, I think you might be misunderstanding that part a little.

What he means is just like Pete said, you can deload if need be, otherwise, do your ME work
