I usually down an Opticen shake as soon as I get home from the gym. Does it make sense to eat a meal right after that as well, or would it be more beneficial to wait a couple hours for the meal?

Eating a meal would be fine.

Chris is right. You should actually try to get a meal in an hour after your post workout shake. Protein are more important than carbs for that meal.

I like to have my PWO shake and then eat about a half hour later. As others suggested for that meal you want to go with something low fat, moderate carbs, high protein.

Remember that you can also bump up your calories in the Opticen shake by adding things like fruit or milk. Opticen + 12 oz of skim milk would be ~500 calories (52 grams protein) / Opticen + Banana would be ~425 calories.
