View Full Version : Things to put in a MetRx shake, difficulty: I'm cutting

I ran out of protein, and didn't have time to run to costco so I picked up some MetRx chocolate protein blend.
It tastes awful, it has the consistency of sludge (I've tried making my shakes with only 25g, still no luck) and smells horrible.
I'm not a baby about food, and I can choke down just about anything (I can handle EAS with no prob's), but I think I have finally met my match.
Right now I'm adding chocolate syrup, and it still is absolutely horrible.

I'm trying to think of different things to add, peanut butter didn't do much other than ruin the consistency further.

Anybody know of anything that really masks bad taste?

The best taste masker I'm aware of is refined sugar (think girly drinks). Terrible option for a cut though.

The consistency probably has more to do with the amount of liquid in the shake than the protein powder, right?

How much of the stuff did you buy and how much have you already consumed? If it really is that bad, you can probably return it to the store provided you haven't eaten 3/4 of it.

I drank two 50g shakes last night, the second one I actually gagged a bunch on. So this morning I halved the amount of powder to liquid ratio, and the slime texture was still there, just slightly diluted. If I can somehow get over the taste I can handle the slime, but the combination of the two is just too brutal.

Huh, I never found metrx chocolate to be bad at all. pretty good as far as chocolate flavorings go.

use some instant coffee...maybe a tablespoon per packet. will give you a mocha-java type flavor.

I find metrx better than myoplex for sure..both flavor and consistency.

Are you using their whey-only or the blend?

Apple juice might help to mask the taste, I used to make PWO shakes with apple juice, banana, and some ice - it would make any flavor taste great. If you are cutting I would only do this PWO and maybe use a reduced sugar juice to keep the sugar down.

The only other thing that I can think of would be to blend the protein powder with oatmeal and then bake it to make oatmeal protein squares. Then the consistency is not as much of an issue.

Costco will take it back.

The EAS from there taste ok.

I forgot they have some other options now. I only buy the original 'white box' MRP packets. something like 45g of protein, some carbs, etc etc.

Which is a blend.

Never used their straight whey. That kinda sucks that the flavoring is different in the whey vs. MRP's.

Thanks for the tip. I can drink just about anything so it doesn't even have to taste good, so I'm hoping the apple will at least mask the flavor.

yeah i hated met-rx shakes myself, but that was years ago i used them. I like GNC's whey protein when it goes on sale i get it. And this stuff at wal mart wasnt bad either.

There are many, many other options out there that I think you would be very pleased with if you consider the taste of those products to be good.

Nesquick chocolate syrup will make it taste good...

That is true, do they have a sugar free version?

Mercury noted that he is "cutting" right now so wants to keep the shakes relatively clean.

Oh! Sugar free chocolate jello! A box is 4 servings and each serving is 40 calories. Just take a tablespoon and pour it over the mix as its blending or before you mix it ... try to wait an extra minute or two before eating. It thickens it up and flavors it. Also if the shake is sweet but kinda disgusting try adding a scoop of unflavored Cocoa. Natural cocoa is really good for you and if youre cutting you probably havnt had any chocolate so give it a shot.

What's the do the texture of the shake?
Drinking pudding doesn't exactly sound too enticing...

is far from pudding but it thickens the shake up a little bit from watery to more of a milk-shake consistency. Try it out, get a generic grocery store brand of Sugar Free Jello at mine they were on sale for 50cents and i stocked up. I might ease up a bit because im trying to cut splenda out... i guess that stuff isnt good for you in large amounts.

That's an old pic, lol, taken summer 2006. I'm 20lb heavier right now, and probably in the 15% bodyfat range.

Moderation is always smart.
But also keep in mind that many of the people who claim "ZOMG artificial sweetners are teh poison" are just trying to scare people into buying their books, that expose "THE OTHER DANGERS THE INDUSTRY WON'T TELL YOU ABOUT," or some other catchy title.

The current clinical data is suggesting that you really have to consume enormous quantities of splenda before any kind of adverse effects are observed.
