138 pounds trying to get to 150 by August..

Should I take Glutamine Powder and eat good everyday

or Protein Shakes and good food everyday?

Because my protein has a little L-Glutamine in it already?

why is this an either or. both are important supplements. eat a lot and make it healthy, take your whey, and supplement with glutamine. There are probably a bunch of threads on this already

Protein and food. The glutamine will do little for you if you're eating plenty of protein. Shoot for a gram per bodyweight.

Whey protein has tons of glutamine in it. So does chicken. Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body.

...Its an amino acid. Your body needs protein, which is made up of amino acids. Glutamine alone will not cut it.

This.

What an odd question. It's almost like asking whether it's better to get a sheet of drywall or a house.

Thats a perfect analogy.

Bottom line, do some research. The body needs protein to grow, not individual amino acids.

I agree with the posts above. Glutamine supplementation is expensive and will not have any benefit over quality protein shakes which are already rich in glutamine and branched chain amino acids.

If you are trying to gain 12 lbs in 3 months you are going to need a solid overall program including diet, training, recovery, and supplements. There is a thread called "How to gain 10 lbs in 2 months" that may be worth reading through. (http://www.wannabebig.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122160)

My recommendation for a good protein shake would be a blend (whey, egg, casein) like Nitrean. This way you have a protein that can be used for Post-Workout, Between Meals, and at Bedtime - all important times to have adequate protein if you are looking to optimize recovery and mass gains.

Follow Tom and Chris's advice.

On a side note, I have been hearing some talk about straight Glutamine being worthless unless taken via IV. Not sure if this is bs, but I am looking for the study that claims this.

also eating carbohydrates with your protein will help shuttle protein to muscles. Otherwise the body has to go through a laborious process converting some of the protein into simple sugars (glucogenesis) in order to shuttle some of the other protein to muscles

glutamine is only good if you're a burn victim.

were you in a fire accident?

Get enough protein in your diet and you're getting enough Glutamine. There's no need to waste money on Glutamine supplementation as Glutamine is in most of the food you eat... unless you eat cardboard all day.
