View Full Version : Do you drink?

ChickenLegs83

As I've made the transition from recreational bodybuilding to powerlifting, I've sense dropped both my muscular dymorphism and my neurotic attention to eating a perfectly clean diet.

As such, I have a beer an hour or so after my post-workout meal and a few on my off days.

It's well known alcohol consumption is looked down upon more than gay-4-pay in bodybuilding community, but I've known powerlifters to throw back a few.

What about you guys--do you drink?

A little? A lot? In between?

Note: Poll is not public.

I dont drink, personal choice. Dont have a problem with those who do. Just would rather have my wits about me if somthing was to happen.

But I think they say 1 glass of wine a day is healthy.

in moderation.

being in college, much of the social atmosphere revolves around drinking. Not that the peer pressure is that hard to resist, I just find that I would not have much to do with my friends, or have as much fun, if I did not drink in moderation once a week. Since taking up bodybuilding I drink far less than I used to, however.

Why?

To stay lean or because you don't like it?

I definitely agree moderation is best.

I have successfully resurrected my social life, and I'll admit social drinking is a big part of it.

I used to pound the alcohol pretty hard - shots or beer were my thing. When I started training seriously, I all but stopped. Now my wife and I will have a bottle of wine once in a while (I usually drink most of it). Beer here and there, but not much. I've basically stopped doing shots. I don't care to any more. I can still feel them in my system 2 days later. I'm not drunk or hung over, but can feel the alcohol in my system, so I don't.

Drinking heavily isn't nearly as fun as it used to be, though I'll usually let loose and binge drink pretty heavily every once and awhile.

On saturday, for instance, I drank AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL DAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY for our yearly "summer breeze" fair - fried oreos, mechanical bull, all sorts of inflatable devices, free burgers, homemade chariot races, followed by a concert... I went to some wrestler's party that was out doors at like 6 that had LIVE ANIMALS running around too. They bought a live duck and chicken at china town I think. I think their intentions were to eat it at some point (they are hungry wrestlers, after all) though that part of the tradition may have died years ago.

I counted up my tabs at the end of the day and it was something like 14 beers. Point of the story? Drinking and lifting certainly aren't mutually exclusive--I Walked into the gym on monday and SMASHED my goal of the day of 400x3 for squat. I had one hell of a headache sunday morning though. XD XD

Would drinking be the best idea if I wanted to be a world champion powerlifter? No. Though college is the only 4 year pass to binge drink heavily before they start calling you an "alchoholic." XD XD

So yeah. Moderation. There have been numerous threads on this before, though I suppose a poll is something somewhat new.

Will that picture is absolutely hilarious btw.

I like to enjoy a drink with my meals, I vary it depending on what I'm having, and my current mood, but lately bourbon + sprite is a favorite. I'd say overally I do this maybe once a week, not more than 8 times a month though.

I find a cold beer after a DE SQ/DL workout and a 4x4 animal-style burger w/2 orders of fries and a vanilla shake is also a great.

I brew my own beer so yes, I do drink but I try to only do it on weekends and special occasions. Too many times in the past alcohol has been the catalyst that causes me to get in trouble. Also I am 30 now and the idea of a boot n' rally just does not appeal to me as much anymore. :alcoholic:

yes, but only when im thirsty

I had to laugh at that one. I used to drink. Haven't had a drop in a couple of years. It was getting to be a problem. It was contradictory to my personal Christian faith, and what started as a couple here and there became 6-8 a day after a couple of personal lossess. So, I stopped. Could I safely have a beer or two now, sure. I choose not to.

First, EVERYONE (adults) should drink 1-2 glasses of red wine per day. The flavonoids contained therein have cardiovascular benefits.

Beyond that, I only drink when out on the town.

I'm a beer guy myself. I am an avid homebrewer, and I also enjoy sampling the wide variety of beers that are available to us. Its been a hobby of mine for about 2 years now, homebrewing and sampling beer from all over the place. I also collect pint glasses. If I have a beer that is really really good that blows me out of the water, i'll order a pint glass from the brewing company.

I try to limit myself to one day a weekend, especially while training serious, but now that I've moved to Colorado (microbrew mecca) its hard not to enjoy a few on fri, sat, sun night, etc.

Anyways, Home brewing is not hard. To the person that asked that question, i think www.homebrewers.com has a series of videos that are very helpful. Go there!

I drink fairly often. Probably 3 - 4 days / week. Generally I don't get "real drunk", but a decent buzz. The key is to drink so often you become immune to hangovers!

In the gym I go to we have a sticker on the cooler for the energy drinks / protein shakes that says "You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning."

I'd say overall it's a personal choice, and for me a very easy on to make. I mostly drink at home with the wife; the one thing I like to avoid is travelling combined with drinking; so I'm no a big bar-hopper, but in no way do I avoid alcohol.

Great article. Basically, the fermentation process of red winemaking extracts the good stuff. The longer the fermentation, the more of the good stuff in the wine :)

Well, not exactly an unbiased interview - the guy did write "The Wine Diet"... It's fine to point to other cultures and say it's the diet (or the wine) that makes them live longer, but dig a little deeper and you see a lot of reasons why people in some regions outlive us.

Again, nothing against wine - I'm just sayin'.
