I am sure most of you know this website. And I know this has probably been posted before. But I think its important enough to make another thread.

Website lists sex offenders in your neighborhood! Do a search, you might be quite surprised. I was. Even though I live in a relatively safe neighborhood, there were over a dozen sex offenders within a mile. I believe they list only the major offenders, so it doesn't include all the level 1 offenders.
Check out the photos. They have sex offender written all over them!

I've used the site before and it's a great tool. If they don't list the level 1's thats great. The whole "sex offender" term lost any meaning to me when they started listing people that pee in public as sex offenders.

I agree with Genacide. Some of them are obvious but then there are some charges like "vicarious sexual gratification". What the hell does that even mean?

It means you had a wank in your car. The sex offender's registry is bull****, either someone's safe to be released or they aren't. Great, so you know the guy down the road's a kiddy fiddler, your daughter's still statistically more likely to be abused by you than him.

Actually, that's not what it is. That would be public masturbation and/or indecent exposure, depending on the state.
The definition of the terms suggest that it's achieving sexual gratification through someone else. That suggests it's maybe voyeurism...though I think that one tends to have its own charges associated with it.
EDIT: I found it. Apparently it means that this guy either tried to get people to have sex in front of him or he tried to get someone to have sex with him in front of a third party. What a load of balls.

According to what I found, it looks like it's anyone at all.

Agreed with the 1st part, but the 2nd is rediculous. That statistic just means more people are abused by someone they know/trust than by randoms - it doesn't mean they're more likely to be abused by someone they know/trust than a convicted sex offender!

Agreed. The person being a convicted sex offender sort of changes up the variables.

The city I grew up in has a heavy Mormon population in the downton area. There is a massive cluster**** of child molester homes in the same area.

1 rapist and 10 child molesters in my neck of the woods.
1/4-1/3 of SDPD lives in my area, so I think that and the cost of homes makes it a really safe area.
It's so sad we have to have such registries, but the public has the right to know.

That's debatable. I think this is the second time I've ever agreed with anelka but the registry is bull****. It only exists to provide the illusion of security where there is none. No other class of criminal offenses has a registry for it that require public knowledge of supposedly rehabilitated individuals.
It incites prejudice and raises the chances of panic and vigilantism.

Agreed. People make mistakes, they go to prison and pay they price, and they are allowed to assimilate back into society. However; sexual predators, child molesters, and rapists are the lowest scum of humanity, and in my opinion there is no rehabilitation from this ****. They need to be closely monitored and registered in this type of system, and parents should have the right to know if they have these type of people in their communities.

this story is related to the thread. a rape suspect of an 11 year old girl was beaten critically by a neighborhood posse. the local DA says he will not be charging any of the individuals -- who were caught on tape beating him.

So what happens if he is found to be not guilty or innocent? Will they press charges then?
that's a good question. I suppose there would be a flurry of aggravated assault/felony assault charges. Fox news had a video interviewing the individuals who openly admitted whomping him... will have to see how the case unfolds.

Ain my opinion there is no rehabilitation from this ****.
And on what expertise are you basing this opinion? The fact that you've spent lots of time working closely with those people and are a trained mental health and criminal psychology specialist?
Do you realize that people that get drunk and urinate in public are forced to register as sex offenders?
In some states, if two minors are having sex and are prosecuted, that does not get expunged from records and they are forced to register as sex offenders. Happens frequently.
Oh yeah, if two parents happen to forget to lock their door and a child wanders in while they're going at it, they're having sex in front of a minor. Boom. On the list you go.
A girl gets a little tipsy, goes home with a guy, then regrets it the next morning, she just claims rape and she's automatically not a whore. Happened to two people I know personally. One of them had the charges cleared and his life was still ruined. He had to move to another STATE. The other one wasn't so lucky and had to register.
The whole thing is utter bull****. You think convicted drug dealers are less likely to go back to doing what they're doing than sex offenders? How about those that commit armed robbery, grand larceny, or any other felony?
Someone is either safe to release or not. What is the rate of repeat offenses of those types of crimes vs the rate of repeat sex offenders? See if you can find some compelling evidence to support your opinion.
This kind of garbage just encourages paranoia under the guise of informing the public.

Regardless of whether he's found guilty or not, he could easily win a massive lawsuit. The responsible thing for that DA to do would be to press charges. Of course, we as a society no longer believe in "innocent until proven guilty" but like media trials instead.

I understand the registry system is flawed, that still doesn't discount the fact that these people are dealing with an underlying mental illness that isn't going to be cured by spending time in prison or a certain amount of hours with a mental clinician. As far as recidivism rates, one Canadian study had long-term rates as high as 88.3%, another at 52%.
How can you determine if someone is safe to release from prison or not? Am I to place my faith and trust in a psychological evaluation that deems someone may or may not get the urge to molest a child again? It's my opinion, as skewed and unjust as it may be, that I have the right to know if I have a sex offender (I'm not talking about the exceptions you mentioned) living next door to me.
