Notes:
Not a bad day. I started a program for my bench today. I haven't done this program in about 8-9 years. Hopefully it will work out for me. I am starting this program with my best paused bench, which is 425. So we will see how it goes. I might do this program for my squat also, which will start tomorrow. The shoulder press hurt my collar bone a little, so I didn't want to push it any further. Plus, i'm probably going to work on some axle presses on Saturday.

What kind of warm up/stretching do you use for bench and squat???

Haha, nothing :)

I shouldn't say nothing, because I'll mess around with some torso twists w/ a broomstick. But I don't do this all the time. Like today, all I did was warmup with the bar and that was it. Tomorrow I'm squatting so I might do some twists.

great bench session hopp!!! im curious about this program...wut is it like?

Thanks Chase!!! It's a 7 week program and it starts with 10 reps and then each week the reps will drop by two and the weight will change at the end. If you follow my bench and squat for the next 7 weeks you'll see what I mean. It sucks at the beginning unless you have good muscle endurance. I was getting gassed towards the end. I haven't used it in so long, I hope I can still make gains from it.

Brian Hopper
03-09-2011, 06:25 AM
Nice volume on that bench. Nose breakers sound interesting, is it like a facepull?

Thanks Luna!!! At the beginning of my program it starts off with high reps and then tapers down. Nosebreakers are like skull crushers, but I bring the bar down to my nose instead because it feels better on my elbows. It's pretty much a lying tricep extension.

Strong strong work Mr Hopper. Heavy GMs. Although I used a fraction of that weight its difficult to say whether I liked them or not. Some folks swear by them.

I wish I hadnt started looking through everyones logs. Its making me want to train, lol.

Yeah it's the same program and same %. I'm thinking about doing it for my deadlift when I'm 8-9 weeks out from the meet. But I think my back will be fried and I won't be able to do much strongman training. But we'll see how it goes.

Yeah it sucked, it looked good on paper but damn I was tired after the 385. Hopefully this will help me out with my muscle endurance. Thanks B, I really didnt think I was going to get that 420. Next week I'll work on some reps and get some training done.

Notes:
Today was my first day doing the axle press and yolk, and so far I like them both. I still have to get use to the continental, but I do feel a little comfortable with it. The 271 lockout was alot easier then the 251 lockout and I think it's because I used more leg drive. So once I get this all figured out, hopefully the weight will increase. I didn't feel all that comfortable with the yolk, but it still wasn't that bad. I'm right around where the weight will be at the competition, so that's a plus. Next time I do these i'll either go up in weight for the same distance or keep the weight the same and try a longer walk. Next week, i'll do some sort of OHP and some farmer walks. I need to order some tacky so I can start doing some stones.

Tacky is good, but not essential, i have seen guys pick up a 350LBS stone without it, just get some sleeves, I just started using the sleeves of a wet suit, works a treat, stops your arms getting cut to crap....Pretty sure you know all this stuff but i am saying it anyway ;)

Thanks, I might add some more volume to my events day but maybe more conditioning. I got the pain from doing those deadlifts w/ the farmer handles. It did hurt when I was doing the shoulder presses but I never felt the any pain when I would bench. It would also hurt a little when I would do some sort of shrugs, but I'm going to pull sumo tomorrow or rack pulls so we'll see how it feels.

I've only done stones 3 times so I haven't really noticed what works best. The other guys wrap duck tape around their forearms and they use spider tacky. This I've done once and so far I like it. I definitely need to cover my forearms because im not trying to mess up my tattoos, lol.

Notes:
I went to Gold's today and trained because my 14yo brother-in-law wants to start working out for Judo. So his parents signed him up today so he can start training. Anyways, the rack pulls weren't that bad. That damn bar was pretty much maxed out with weight. I had to rig up a few things so I can stand on and have the bar set below my knees. I was also feeling that pain again in my collar bone, but only when I stood up at lockout. So I pretty much just popped my hips through at the top and went back down, I tried not to spend much time at lockout because I didn't want to cause anymore pain.

I guess you can say it's a PR. I've never really pulled that heavy in Golds before. I'm going to try that same height at my regular gym in two weeks and see how it feels. That is the most I've pulled off of blocks or a rack, and once I broke it off the pins it wasn't that bad. I probably could of locked out 740-750 if I could break it loose.

I never really pull from that height. Even when I pull off a 6" block, it's still lower. So far I think the 6" blocks are harder to pull from.

"I never really pull from that height. Even when I pull off a 6" block, it's still lower. So far I think the 6" blocks are harder to pull from."

4" is prob my best as I can get speed but the ROM/ TUT is less, 6-8" its hard to get speed for sure.

4" blocks are my best also, I can get into a good pulling position. I'm going to start hitting all 3 heights: 4", 6", and then rack pulls like I did today just below my knee.

Great rack pulling!! Do you have a pre-existing injury with the collar bone?

Thanks Thomas!!! I injured my collar bone a couple weeks ago doing those deadlifts with the farmer handles. I dropped the weight down and wanted to get a triple and on the first rep I felt something pop. But it's weird because I can touch it and put pressure on it and I feel no pain at all. But today when I was standing straight up at lockout, it was hurting. I'm hoping this will go away soon, because now I'm getting worried when I pull.

Since I cut up my finger pretty bad and I have it wrapped up, it's gonna be hard to train. Lucky for me, I was already planning on doing some CSGM's on Monday. So I will just go ahead and plan on that. On Tuesday I'm going to try and bench, but it might be hard for me to squeeze the bar. I should be fine to squat, so no worries there. On my events day, I might just do some seated military's with a fat bar and maybe do the yoke again, but light for a longer distance. As far as my assistance work goes, im probably going to skip on most of it and just focus on my main lifts. But of course, everything is going to go by feel.

You look a lot bigger than that, Hopp and I mean that in the best possible way.

Strong benching. No slowing up. Hope the digit is back in order soon. There was a guy on the boards, ''Zenmonkey'' that crushed two of his fingers when reracking a squat. He posted pics in the video/pictures forum a good while ago. Literally looked like the the tops of his fingers had exploded. Hope yours isnt as bad.

Thanks Justin, even though I've been getting the worse two questions ever "Are you losing weight" or "Are you still working out". So I take your comment as a huge compliment, lol.

I remember that guy, where did he go? I don't think mine is that bad, lol.

Notes:
Not a bad day, except for the fact that everything felt heavy. I have a list of excuses as to probably why, but I won't list them because I did get my weight and reps that I needed. Next week I drop the reps down and add some weight. The finger didn't bother me at all on the squats and front squats, but I did hit my finger a couple times doing the blob, which didn't feel too good, lol.

Yep, lol. I had to do each rep without wrapping my middle finger around the bar. It's ok, hopefully it will get better soon and I won't have to worry about it.

Thanks!!!

Yeah, 6 was the number I needed....even though I wanted at least 7-8. My best with 535 was for 10 reps and I think that was with knee wraps (I can't remember) so I'm 4 shy of matching a rep PR.

Thanks.

I usually train in the morning so i'll eat oatmeal and an apple, so no protein before I train. After my training, I'll probably have about 60-70 grams of protein.

That sounds good, I'll probably do that tomorrow after I try to finish up some yard work.

Here is a video of Donnie Thompson demonstrating how to do the blob. Ours is a little different, but it works the same way.

I did something similar last night with 12" boxes and a 90lb bell (nothing bigger).........good stretch and felt like good muscle work if you know what I mean, plenty of muscle tension with that ROM.

Thats cool, we use a 13" box so it's not that much of a difference. I like these alot because of the stretch, so I know what your talking about, lol.
