View Full Version : Me & My Buddy, Squatting and Jerking Together

After finally getting Starting Strength, I am trying to start applying the technique and routine in it. It was only two months ago that I started doing squats and deadlifts, although total I've probably weightlifted for four years of my life, embarrassingly. So let's just say I've got some catching up to do on all the SS exercises. Tonight was my FIRST time with OH press and power cleans. My buddy is getting into lifting as well, so this was his first week doing all of these exercises. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Also, I'm really focusing on form on the powerclean. I realize we're going slow on it, so I might not be explosive enough with my knees / hips?

And please don't laugh at my OH Press weights. :-)

Have you watched videos of powercleans? I know you are trying to learn the form, but I would maybe use less weight and work on being explosive with them. Once you are confident with your form, put some weight on there. It is not a slow movement that you can muscle weights on, you need to be explosive. A power clean is from the floor to the top....you don't do a slow deadlift to mid thigh and pause for a while. Check out some vids on youtube.

Thanks for the reply! I will definitely speed it up once I know that that's somewhat the order goes in. I think Rippetoe says you are really supposed to explode mid-thigh (correct me if I'm wrong), which clearly neither of us did.

If it was fluid , would it have looked good?

The powercleans were painful to watch. When learning them, I've always heard go light, etc - even with a broomstick...so I'm gonna go ahead and recommend the same as CR. However, I'll also add that I couldn't figure out powerclean/hangclean form with light weight - because you simply CAN cheat (curl, whatever) the weight and still finish the movement. Put on a lot of weight, and you'll HAVE to explode or you WONT get the lift...as weeks go on, your form will basically have to improve in order to do more weight. I don't know that I can recommend it, because it does seem much more likely that you could injure yourself this way - but it did work for me and it made sense to me.

Thanks for the reply guys. That video helped a bunch, actually, and you're right....she is better than me. :mad: She has excellent form. I'm going to be re-reading SS like 10 times to make sure I can remember everything.

Any comments on the depth squats, OH press, etc?

Also, kind of a funny story...so here I was with my buddy doing OH presses, me with two 10's on each side. After my set I walk around to film him, and this lady to the left of me on the squat rack says, "You two are making more noise over there doing those than I am with this."

I was thinking, "What a *****...." until I looked over and realized she was right. :-( She was doing rack pulls with 315, lol.

Seriously though, keep up the hard work and practice the form until you have it perfect before you start handling lots of plates.
