View Full Version : This is why I hate when other people touch my car

I had some suspension work done a while back and I had them change the oil while the car was up. They didn't charge me so I couldn't complain.

Until yesterday when I planned on changing the oil and filter.

This is what happened:

Note: I didn't post this as an image because it may be too gross for the squeamish type. Be forewarned.

I tried unscrewing it by hand like I normally do. Wasn't happening. So I put on some grippy gloves and tried it about 10 times. After the 10th time I looked at my hand and saw the damage.

The dude who screwed it in my have decided to really give it all he had because I ended up having to use a bleeping pipe wrench to get it off after trying a strap wrench.

amen to that. I hate letting other people touch my car... I used to work in a garage, so i did all my own stuff, now i do everything myself except change my tires. and everytime I have to I cringe that they will do something stupid. like overtightening a oil filter..... come on...

anyways, I don't know if you know or not, so if you do, sorry. but if you rub some oil on the rubber ring on the new oil filter before putting it back on it will come off 100x easier even if its tight as hell.

hope that hand heals fast!

Yes, I actually do do that. My first girlfriend's dad taught me that when I first started getting into cars and I've done it since. I don't doubt the guy that did this job neglected to do that.

I also can't stand it but it's a necessary evil. I feel like everytime I get something done, even minor like an oil change, I have to 'break-in' the car again. Everytime I get it back it feels off and uncomfortable for a few days.

Just get an oil filter socket from auto zone for 5 bucks...it tightens up over time due to heating/cooling cycles it goes through during the 3-5k miles its on there. You can put it on totally loose and it will be much tighter when you go take it off. Same with the bolt. For the bolt, a breaker bar is a good option.

Also be careful who you take your car to for an oil change...they are not precise at all with the correct fluid levels, nor the correct oil to put in your car. When I bought my GTO, the previous owner told me he always took it to Grease Monkey to get it changed...the thing was overfilled by at least a quart.

I've never had it that tight since I've had the car and I've been doing oil changes on it for six years years. I've also had no problem using a 1/4" drive taking off the drain plug.

The guy who did the job is just a side mechanic at a place that I trust; like I said it was just a favor after getting suspension work done. I provided the fluids and filter.

I've heard horror stories about Jiffy Lube and vow never to take my car to a commercial garage.

do the suspension work yourself or take it to a reputable shop

Did you even read the OP? He already had the work done. :hello:

It was a reputable shop. Doing the suspension work myself would be negated because I needed a front-end alignment after the upper ball joint was replaced, which, unless you have your own alignment machine, you necessarily have to take it to a shop.

The lesson learned is to not let them do little stuff like a fluid change because they farm it out to the auxiliary mechanic.

This also brings up the condition of my hands. They are either clammy as hell to the point where I can't grip anything without chalk or too dry where this happens.

No ****. So he's done doing suspension work on that car for the rest of the cars life?

Your hand could use a little lotion, injuries aside.

Must not be your jerking hand, eh?

Looks just like the skin lesions Crossfitters get when they do a lot of kipping pull-ups...

That is correct.
