View Full Version : 3 Day Weekend Getaway Ideas...

Looking to take the wife out of town for a long weekend in a few short months, and need some ideas. Sadly, from a career of flying, Im struggling for good ideas. We are hoping to hit a decent city scene (big or small) for 3 days in a nice hotel, with great restaurants within reasonably close vacinity. We aim to relax, drink, and have some great meals.
Not looking for a "scenic" getaway where there would be too much temptation to get out...with not enough time to do justice (San Fran, Seattle, etc.). Something more where everything we would need would be within 10-20 minutes of our hotel.
Any suggestions?

I'm going to be going for my first time with my gf near the end of the month, and everything I hear about it seems like there's lots to do, whether you want to go out to party, or you just want to go and relax and enjoy some food.
Since you've lived there though, i'd say to go somewhere else.
I'd also recommend Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal, but there's quite a bit of stuff to see in both Toronto and Montreal, so you'd be tempted to go out.

Ive flown into Canada many a time, and Calgary seemed to look like an amazing place (we were in and out in a day). Sure looked sweet! Ill check out Toronto and Montreal. If you want some insight on Vegas, drop me a line. Ive got plenty of suggestions for places to go there. ;)

A lot of historic stuff to look at. Shops to hit up. Great food. The night life is pretty decent. Usually busy, but not to the point where it feels congested, dirty or unsafe. There are a few places to stay right off of historic downtown that allow easy access to everything at a pretty reasonable price.

Denver, CO! I'm biased because I live here, but tons of brew pubs, lots of great restaurants downtown.

I recommend Toronto. Downtown. Tons of really nice hotels, really good restaurants, and lots of entertainment. Get a really nice steak dinner downtown, then catch a jays game, or go shopping in yorkville to please the wife, or go to toronto island for the day and relax. Check out the website.

Santa Barbara, CA. Stay in Mussel Shoals at the Cliff House, just south of Santa Barbara. It's right on the coast, plenty to do, lots of good restaurants (1 at the Cliff House). Fly into LAX, drive 1.5 hours drive. My wife and I go there once a year.

I'd say a resort in Arizona, but I love 'zona.
I would recommend going to Sonoma or Napa valley maybe, just north of San Fran and you could do a little San Fran, do a little wine, not bad. I know you nixed San Fran, but I'm just sayin'.
Other than that, you might want to hit up Austin, TX. Great city, tons of stuff to do but nothing you have to do like all the tourist BS in other cities.
But if I had a long 3 day weekend to burn I would find a ultra swank nice resort and hole up with the lady, some books, a pool, drinks, and food.

Charleston is a great place. Lots of stuff to see for free, you can just take a stroll through town and see so much really cool, historic stuff. They have ghost tours at night, which I personally LOVE.
There's a lot of interesting hotels, with some of them being very old. Some are on the national register for haunted places, etc. There's a lot of tours you can take in-general, and they aren't going to be something on some stuffy bus and such. Plantation tours, etc. There's great shopping in town and over in Goose Creek (I think that's where it was).
I've really enjoyed my visits there..a very unique, classic example of the classic South.

Sweet suggestions all. NYC, Seattle, San Fran, and Washington DC are on our week long stay list, but Austin TX and Charleston are on our 3 day list. We lived in Vegas for a few years so Ive spent lots of time in CA (and love it) but we would like to try something new.
Doing some research on Charleston though for sure. Whats the best time of season to go there for decent weather and lul in tourist trends?
