View Full Version : 225 for reps - how many can you do?

I would post a poll, but don't know how. Lately I've been working on some hypertrophy exercises to increase muscle size after my strength routines. A couple of weeks ago I rep'd out 315 for 16 reps. Last week I repped 225 for 31 reps. So for a quick poll let's get some replies like this just for a study I am doing:

BW:242
225 Reps - 31
Max Raw - 440

Make sure you put your BW and your 1RM on flat bench RAW. I am interested in the frequency in which you guys attempt these reps as well. For instance I'll only do max reps like this maybe every 3 months.

I haven't done this on flat bench in a while, but I just did it on incline today after my ME sets.

BW: 235
Incline 225 reps: 18
Incline PR: 325

When I've seen people do max reps they tend to not even come close to locking out each rep. The NFL combine is an example.

Why?

I think it stems from the NFL combines personally, but I agree, 225 for reps is a poor judge of strength and more endurance.

I haven't done it in a looong time, but my best is 40

bw at the time it was done was around 250, I'm about 255 right now

best bench is 540 in the gym, however at the time I did the 225x40 it was closer to 475-500 range if I recall correctly.

Honestly, I hate doing them because it's such a cardio exercise for me LOL. I'd rather do 405 or 455 for reps.

Interesting thread though

So, is this something that people *should* do? Or do you do them just out of some personal curiosity?

225 x 10 - I've never maxed out on reps with 225 before. I doubt I had more than 2 or 3 reps left in me though.
Max: 305 (raw) thinking about getting my first bench shirt though. :D

I guess we're talking a straight set here? (no rest-pausing single reps). I imagine 225 must feel like nothing to those with a max squat in the high 400's.

Also I would be interested to know if anyone here does Olympic style sets, and if a 'posterior chain' dominant squat would fatigue the back more quickly.?!

This is for the bench press.

No I don't think this has anything to do with strength training. Like Travis said it is more about endurance. I don't like to train like this but some buddies of mine were talking about the football combine thing recently and this spurred the reps debate. One of the guys made the statement that NFL requires all of the players to bench 225 at least 20 reps. But I found interest in the reps vs. max weight vs frequency of this type of training. For myself I stay in the 3-5 rep range probably 98% of the time on bench.

That was classic. However, from the look of your log, your raw bench seems to be shooting up. Good training Tone.

BW =225
Raw max=325
225 x 19

T&G of course... Try and pause that many times!!!

I do it spontaneouely when the mood stikes, otherwise no set training schedule.

Did it a while back on another internet challenge. Weighed about 280 and did 43 if I remember right. Did a different challenge a little later of reps with bodyweight (rounded to nearest 5 pounds). Did 32 with 280. Keep in mind my raw stroke is only 4 inches! Gregg (damnstrate) probably moved the bar 5 times as far with his 26 as I did with 43! I swear his stroke looks 4 feet long! He has an incredible bench for arms so long!

I once wrestled a cow who was milked by a guy who knew this girl who dated a guy who had a cousin who had a brother that did 225 for 87 reps when he was 6 years-old and weighed 87lbs. The cow moo'd the guy said the girl said the guy said his cousin said his brother said he could have done more if he wasn't distracted by SpongeBob coming on TV at that moment.

Wouldn't the brother of the cousin also be a cousin to the guy? Although the cousin certainly does have a brother, in this case it would make more sense to say that it's the guy's cousin that bench pressed 225x87 at 6 years of age.

Your story was believable except for that. It's the attention to details, my friend. You almost had me.

Besides, the real question here is, was the girl hot?

Me: I went to the club last night and hooked up with this TOTAL hot ass chick.
You: Did you drive to the club or walk?
Me: Why in the hell would that matter?
You: I need to know what to bitch about.

LOL ok you got me on the cousin thing.

I just realized that after being registered here for almost 2 years, my first post was one messing with you. Not a great way to start off but that's my luck.

I actually have done a few rep contests, but they were either bodyweight for reps, 50 lbs. over bodyweight for reps, and even 100 lbs. over body weight for reps.

Anyway, the closest I've come to 225 for reps is when I weighed 185 and did 235 lbs. for 30 reps. (On two separate occasions). I also did 250 for 30 reps when I weighed 200.

My best raw bench in competition is 450 lbs. @ 193 lbs. bodyweight. (two hour weigh-in)
