Thanks for posting this up man!

Also, just to clarify, NO elbow sleeves, just knee sleeves. It's too hard to distinguish between someone using an elbow sleeve or an elbow wrap

If you really have a hard time going without your elbow sleeves, use them for all but your video sets, just take them off for the last couple sets that you are going to be submitting.

there was some discussion about what everyone was doing to prep for the meet in the original thread. I think the general consensus was that the meet is too close and everyone is just sticking to what they have been doing.

That makes sense, I wouldn't change my whole training program around but I can think of a few tricks to make sure that you PR on the test day.

Things like pyramid progression and dietary adjustments can be effective even if you only have a couple of weeks to "peak".

I'm in the competition, but I don't think I'm in contention for anything. I rank among the weakest of the weak here. :D Did deadlifts tonight - got 345 x 8. That is an all time PR for me. Got my bodyweight back down to 176.4 lbs from a high of 182 on Monday. Hmmm... trash talk? I'm on old bastich! I'm 43 and have a total of 31 consecutive weeks of training under my belt for the past two years. I am challenging all you young punks to beat the ornery, old, grouchy malcontent that is me. I also plan on sending what rank I want on the back of a $100 bill to both Travis and Vinny (I'll still come out $50 ahead!)

I have a few questions about the competition. Are we to wear a singlet when we lift or just wear whatever? Are we to mention the amount of weight on the bar before a lift. I do know some lifters use a 55 pound bar and that may throw the amount off when watching the videos. Do the lifts have to be done on the same day? Can't wait to get my total.

endymion88

anybody mind if i do my lifts early? i could do the videos not next week but the following, i'd rather do them then since my 5/3/1 is scheduled for deload after. do you want all three attempts or just our biggest lifts? i'd really like to prolong taking videos but how much stronger can i get by the end of november lol what 5 lbls a lift or something :P

Tim K
10-29-2009, 05:45 PM
I don't have any problems with anyone lifting early. I believe a couple folks are even putting up video from a competition they have this month. As long as the lift is from after the entry deadline and before the video posting deadline, I don't see it as an issue. I don't have a singlet, so I'm lifting in whatever. However, I am not a judge.

There is no way it matters what you wear? Within reason of course. A squat suit under a dressing gown would be unfair.

I think Matt (eatmyway2thetop) is doing all his lifts in just a pair of ankle socks and a stetson.

Is best lifter the only thing determined by formula and the best squat, bench, dead and total are just straight weight, giving the larger lifters a better chance?

I am not complaining because everything that is being offered is a gift. I just want to make that clear. I am just a little disappointed that the heavier guys competing obviously have a crazy advantage. And there is really nothing a smaller guy can win except formula. I love competing, I just hate it when you stand no chance at winning.

I'm right there with ya - as far as being a little guy with no chance of winning. But honestly, that isn't why I'm competing. For me, this is a fun competition to throw some numbers up. My goal is to total more than 1050 lbs. That will be about 90 lbs more than my last meet, which took place back in 1986.

Maybe a future contest can be based on ratio to bodyweight (wilks per lift), in that most of the lighter guys would have a distinct advantage.

The spirit of this competition is to push people to shoot for PR's and to motivate through online competition. Just like with everything in life, if you take something too seriously then it is no longer fun.

As for prizes and what determines winner; had it been my choice only I would have set up 2 or at most 3 weight classes, no formula as I dont care too much for it. Now I understand light guys prefer it and that's why we choose it for this one but if Im the one to organize the next contest around here I won't set it up the same way.
Now you've got to understand it all started as a challenge between me and a couple of lads, and I just created a thread to see if a couple more lifters felt like joining I never thought it would be bring that much people.
Anyway thanks again to ALN for stepping up big time and I have no doubt it's going to be fun seeing people break PRs left and right. Also thanks to Travis and Vinny for getting involved in this.

Powerlifting is a sport that rewards lifters in lighter classes, but generally the big contests are all about size / strength.

Has anyone here heard of Hideaki Inaba?

Most probably have not, but he is one of the most dominant powerlifters of all time winning 17 strait IPF world titles (the only large federation at the time). His lifts were 535/265/525... RAW at 114 lbs. The reason that people don't know about him is because those lifts are not very uncommon in the general public so he does not get much credit, despite being the first man to squat 4X bodyweight and the first man to total 10X bodyweight.

I have competed in more than 25 strength contests and in many cases am giving up anywhere from 20 to 100+ lbs to the other competitors. It is about having fun and challenging yourself; there are plenty of instances where I have beat out some of these monsters and also times where I did not. The thing is that I keep coming back for more, determined to get bigger/stronger/more athletic.

This is an online contest that is meant to be a fun challenge to motivate some guys. I know that people on here are competitive and want to win, and I hate to say it but powerlifting is a sport where you can always win with the number of federations, weight classes, age categories, gear classes, and tested/non-tested. This contest is for bragging rights on an online forum, and a company decided to chip in prizes which is very grateful.

One of the best ways to get stronger is to train/compete with guys who are bigger than you. I have done this for years and it works very well. So for anyone who is a big light and concerned that things are not fair, just look at this as an opportunity to improve yourself!

Sorry for the rambling, I just think this contest is a great idea. I am sure that future contests will involve different disciplines where other types of athletes can excel (conditioning, etc.).

Tom, I agree that this competition pushes people to hit PRs which is awesome. I just kind of think it sucks that the competition is called "the strongest of the weak ones" and there are so many great prizes, yet we're letting Pros compete in it...

Just seems a little unfair, especially when the original contest was just between a few friends, and offered to open it up to others with similar stats...

I'm not complaining for myself, I have no chance. I just love the motivation. But motivation comes with competition, and the competition is only really among a few guys.

I know for me personally, the motivation and desire to compete in this competition dropped significantly when I saw some of the names on the list that I would be "competing" against. I wouldn't even call it a competition.

Painzer,

I know exactly what you mean - which is why I keep coming back to what the original competition was about - just a bunch of guys throwing up videos of their best lifts. I have no chance to compete against the heavier, stronger guys with years of experience. But I do have the chance to set my own PRs.

It is almost as if the competition is divided within itself - those guys with a shot at the prizes, and the rest of us for whom the competition was originally designed. I'm fine with that too.

There are a couple guys here that I really feel are my competition. Here is a rundown of where I'm currently at:
Age: 43
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 177
Bench - 265
Squat - 405
Dead - 385

That puts me real close with a few of you guys and that is where I'm hoping to make my showing. :D The strong guys... let them run for the glory and the prizes. The rest of us, the 'Strongest of the Weak' will continue on in the original intent of the competition.

In a couple years, we'll be the ones that the new guys are complaining about. :D

This is the point i was tring to make, it started as 1200 or what ever total it was, then it got where guys with close to elite totals were in it, those guys have plenty of places to compete, let the little guys have a chance at something.I am not bitching about it,just saying i agree with your point.

there is one pro in the competition and his raw lifts are not great, nobody in this is superhuman i don't see what all this complaining is about it is ruining the spirit of the competition and i'm sure it's leaving a bad taste in at large nutritions mouth, they put up 1000 dollars worth of prizes expecting nothing and they get people complaining. this is for fun. you do not go into a real life competition knowing who you are lifting against do you? so what if you don't win money the whole purpose of this is to make new personal bests. i can guarantee nobody would have anything negative to say about this if aln didn't give prizes. like was said earlier this is the first competition there will be more competitions later and i'm sure there will be more equalizers next time like more weightclasses this is a testrun. all anybody can really do is train to get stronger, kill some weights in the gym, set some bitchin pr's at the end of this month, and kill some more weights to beat your opponents next time!

lol i had my girlfriend make me a youtube so she can do it. maybe i could post a vid of my weak benching that i do tonight...i may be able to deadlift but that sure doesn't help my benching >.<# i'm so close to that 700 raw conventional deadlift @198 drug free i wish i could do it in this competition but unless i magically gain a bunch on my pulling in the next week and a half (when i'm taking vids) then it's outta the cards...maybe if i eat like 30 bull testicles a day it'll give it a boost...hmmmmmmmmm

This is the point i was tring to make, it started as 1200 or what ever total it was, then it got where guys with close to elite totals were in it, those guys have plenty of places to compete, let the little guys have a chance at something.I am not bitching about it,just saying i agree with your point.

This is what I saw when it started:

"We're having a little challenge with some of the guys keeping a log here; namely Flynn, Mattburns, Brihead and anyone that feels like entering it. We're all pretty much in the same ballpark strength wise, I'd say somewhere around 1200-1350 raw. We'll go for it the last week of November and lifts must preferably be recorded on video."

I don't think anyone joining is looking at a total much higher than that. Like others have said, this is supposed to be a fun and motivating way to hit PR's and improve YOUR total. I love competing, I love sports, I love winning....but that isn't always what is important. I'd say if you did this comp and put 30 lbs on your total, then you already did win. With 20+ people lifting, you can't expect to have high odds of winning.

I think i was lookat at peoples geared lifts, so i was wrong, and everyone is ok with how this is set up, so thats cool with me. I think these things are great and hope i can get into one sometime, if my old skinny body doesnt fall apart.

there is one pro in the competition and his raw lifts are not great, nobody in this is superhuman i don't see what all this complaining is about it is ruining the spirit of the competition and i'm sure it's leaving a bad taste in at large nutritions mouth, they put up 1000 dollars worth of prizes expecting nothing and they get people complaining. this is for fun. you do not go into a real life competition knowing who you are lifting against do you? so what if you don't win money the whole purpose of this is to make new personal bests. i can guarantee nobody would have anything negative to say about this if aln didn't give prizes. like was said earlier this is the first competition there will be more competitions later and i'm sure there will be more equalizers next time like more weightclasses this is a testrun. all anybody can really do is train to get stronger, kill some weights in the gym, set some bitchin pr's at the end of this month, and kill some more weights to beat your opponents next time!

I hope it doesnt leave a bad taste in anyones mouth.everyone has an oppion,if no one ever asked questions it would not be a good world.

It looked way too high to me. Also, your knees looked like they were buckling and I swear I saw you visibly age during the squat. I think the weight is too heavy, you're too old, and much too weak. You should drop out of the contest immediately if not sooner.

Seriously though, it looked a hair high, but the speed was easily there. If you nail the depth, you've got the weight. I'm thinking a 500 lbs squat is not out of the question.

powerm64
11-03-2009, 05:04 PM
Thanks for the critique. I thought it might be a bit high, I do agree the speed and even the strength is there to do 500 or so. Yes I think I did age a bit after that squat. lol

I had my meet this weekend. Unfortunatley I have to pull out of this competition. I only got my first deadlift in, which wasnt caught on video. Even if it had been on video, the angle and distance of the benching and squatting werent really that great and Im not going to redo it cause I have another meet in 4 weeks. I had squatted 375, benched 225 and deadlifted 405. Thanks to all who made this competition possible, thanks to ALN for putting up the prizes, and good luck to the competitors.

Also, I realize my form is not so great. I suck raw and basically sit back a bit and dive bomb, lol. Also my left knee is still kinda funky and you can see the grinder rep lags behind on the left side.

Wish I'd known about the deadline extension before. I went ahead and went for a PR bench today but didn't quite get it. It was probably dumb because I did a 315 bench on Wednesday (but like an idiot forgot my camera) and was trying to get it in before the deadline. I guess maybe I'll try again next Sunday.

Make sure your spotter is not touching the bar during your bench. He can have his hands just below, but no touching.

Thanks. I noticed he went for the bar when he was spotting me. I never felt any help, and after watching it I don't think he did, but I included the 320 attempt in case you didn't want to pass the 330. I understand if you don't pass it. You have to be as fair and consistent as possible with your judging.

powerm64: Thank you good sir. You are being too kind by using "strong" in regards to me. lol

Nice lifts Guido! You need to teach me how to use a suit to pull in because I want your carryover, lol.Well, it mostly has to do wtih using the suit to pull in for about 4 years straight and never pulling raw. When you do that you get really used to that type of lift so when you don't have the suit you have to almost re-learn how to pull. I'm just figuring that out now. For one, I have to remember to use my leg drive a lot more pulling raw whereas in the suit you can get away with using the legs less because the suit helps the most off the bottom.

So far I have:

Squat: 470
Bench: 305
Dead: 507
Total: 1,282

That's all at 211 lbs BW.

I want to hit a 315 bench and 480 squat by Sunday which woud then take me to a 1,302 total.

I'm just curious. Being that the prizes are being awarded as follows:

* Best lifter by formula - $250 cash or equivalent ALN gift certificate
* Best total - $250 cash or equivalent ALN gift certificate
* Best squat - $150 AtLarge Nutrition gift voucher
* Best bench - $150 AtLarge Nutrition gift voucher
* Best deadlift - $150 AtLarge Nutrition gift voucher

Isn't it quite possible that one person could win all of those categories? Does that mean they get $950 or equivalent in products? Or will one person be eligible for one prize, and then the next highest lifter would win one, etc.? Just curious how that will work since it's not clear.

endymion88

Yeah, someone can win everything.

It should be biggest lifts by bodyweight... some dude that weighs 350 could win with a 1.3 x BW bench at 450 while a small guy with a 2.5x BW bench would win nothing.

I don't know what the final rules are for lifts, but in my opinion, you should be able to submit three lifts each for squat, deadlift, and bench as long as the higher attempts were made after the previous ones and before the deadline. If you have some stronger efforts, post 'em up!

Thought I would post my videos for the contest. Bodyweight 208/209, age 45. I wish I would of had time to do a 500 squat but this is my best for this contest, I know my deadlift sucks but I will work on that for the next contest, I can usually pull 500 raw but couldn't get one in for this contest. This has been a fun time for me since I haven't been squatting or deadlifting much these days. I now have drive again thanks to this contest to do a full meet in 2010. I want to thank everyone for the support, to this web site for hosting this contest and to AtLarge Nutrition for the great prizes. Let the videos begin:

455 squat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ-iaI_ustk

470 squat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oI_6E967RsA

340 USAPL Raw bench http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WhwbxOq5EQ

355 bench http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tldhFWny8s

365 bench http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnGSnGslyoY

475 deadlift http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMqzLgxtFxI

Just for fun at the end of my deadlift workout 405 x 12 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYoKBz1_UQY

Well, here goes... I tried to get these done today in less then 2.5 hrs and in a cold friggin gym - about 50 degrees.. wish I had a full day like a PL competition. The squats and DLs just wiped me out.. and it had been 5 hrs since my last meal by the time I tried my last set of DLs.. my warmups stunk, too many sets to get to max weight.. and ended exhausted with the last sets of squats and DLs... but no friggin' excuses, so I'll STFU and just try to get stronger next time..

555 raw DL (not even a belt - cause I can't figure out how to use it on a DL): 10 lb PR with just chalk, short of my 585 lb DL with straps..
OjYNyqMUtfA
385 BP: 5 lb short of my gym PR of 390 - but this was only my 2nd serious BP workout in last 6 months - been doing mostly overhead work for strongman.. and I know the video stinks, but I did this at TPS and if you listen carefully you will hear Vinny yelling at me to push back when the bar starts to slow down. The plates are confusing too.. 3 x 45s metal, then 1 25 lb rubber plate and a 10 on each side.. I ran out of time today (and camera battery) to get a set of BP in, so hopefully this TPS video is ok.. (BTW.. thanks Vinny, Tee Tee and Rhodes for the help that day)

525 DL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7tmSw8BhAs
575 DL miss: Should have had this.. usually if I can get it off the ground I can finish a DL.. not today.. too exhausted.. too hungry.. too friggin' weak..:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7tmSw8BhAs

However, Chris Rodgers and danmac I am missing 2 of each of your lifts. (Chris - Dead and Bench) and danmac (Dead and Squat). Let me know if I have made a mistake.

Sorry Dan, I ended up not getting a deadlift video. I missed my max attempt last week and decided not to go for another this last Friday. I have my bench video, I just haven't uploaded it...trust me it will not be in contention, lol.

Congrats to everyone who hit PR's!! Some very impressive lifts on here! I finished with squat and bench PR's(455 and 275). I felt I was going to be good for 280-285 on bench and prob 535-545 on deads, but I just didn't have it the day I tested. Back to the drawing board.

Great lifting everyone, looks like Athos will take the overall. Very strong lifts for someone weighing 167.

Athos is an animal... in no way should the term weak be used to describe his lifts! Very impressive stuff from lots of lifters (myself excluded). Looks like we have some strong folks here!
