635 lb deadlift for 3 reps

-8NyyDcL5Wk

after that set did 585 for 5.

I'm exhausted LOL

6.5 weeks away from the APF Illinois Raw power challenge; hoping to break 700 on deadlift and total raw elite (APF doesn't have raw elite I don't think, but under most orgs that have it it's around 1551 for 220 lb class) even though my bench is probably only about 75-80% due to my pec tear last year.

Nice work Layne.

What are you planning on doing about the straps? You think you'll probably be able to hold on to 700?

If you're slow at lockout, I'd focus on some pulls against quaded minis

He uses a hook grip Travis and it doesn't seem to limit him (I saw his other meet and he pulled close to 700 lbs with no grip issue).

Hey Travis. As chris said I use a hook grip. So far grip has not been a problem for me. In fact I find the hook grip really isn't good for multiple reps (my thumbs get jarred loose between reps) and also the more I use it the less effective it becomes as the skin gets hard and calloused around my thumb making it more difficult to hold onto the bar. So I actually never use it until the meet so the skin is nice, soft, and sticky. To help my grip what I do is use double overhand during my warm up sets until I can no longer hold on to it; then I switch to straps. At my last meet I hit 690 and I never perceived my grip as being close to giving out.

As for pulls against quaded mini's I don't have an attachment on the deadlift platform for bands so what i've been doing is pulls with 405 with an average band draped over the bar and me standing on it if that makes sense. Also been doing rack pulls from just below the knees

You could set up the quad minis in the power-rack, the loading from the minis seems to be MUCH faster than just standing on a band.

still not sure how it would work though. I guess I could put a dumbbell on either side of the power rack and hook them up there. that might actually work

by 'quaded' i assume it means they are folded over 2x?

I admire guys that can pull with the hook grip. How long did it take to work that in and how long did it take you to be comfortable with it?

635 for 3 Should put you right at 700 or so. Good luck at the meet!

Strong lifting, looks like you will make a good run at 700 in the meet.

I wish that my hands were big enough to hook grip (yes, I have tiny baby hands).

Definitely keep us posted on the rest of your training!

hey Scott, I have never had a problem with it, I think my hands are just perfect size for it and my thumbs are shaped just right for it. Sure they burn after a heavy lift but I don't have a ton of pain for days or anything like that. I was pretty much comfortable with it from the first day I tried it, so I'm very fortunate in that aspect.

I pulled 615 for 3 reps before I pulled 690 so I definitely think that I will be over 700 at the meet so long as I execute correctly

Awesome pulling....

Side note....Hook grip...what exactley is it. Both palms facing you and thumb ontop of forefinger locking it in? Or does that not matter?

Thanks,

Is your rack raised at all? You'll need to fold them over and then run them under the rack (2 loops per side). You need some damn heavy DBs otherwise.

no it's not raised; that's the problem :(

although the rack on campus probably is. I guess I could try that

ur so proud of that lift lol, youve posted it in like 6 places :P. well anyhow it is something to be proud of. my money is on you completely obliterating 700 at your meet in december.

well I hope it doesn't sound arrogant but I do have quite a broad following on the net so I try to get it out there for people. Plus I posted it here as they are more powerlifting oriented and I'm always looking for critiques, especially on my form

Technically neither is the one at my gym, but there is a half-inch clearance or so b/c the floor isn't level so I was able to sneak them under.

not arrogant at all. you got fans, like i said today at the gym to a buddy, 'good natural athletes are hard to find' and you are one of them.

thanks Jeremy, watching your 705 on the #1 spot for the last year has been my inspiration to break 700 man.

And I stomp off to pretty much nowhere. Damn adrenaline makes me act like an idiot :D

Jeremy Hamilton

lol, stomping off to nowhere.

I didn't know my pull was still #1, I thought it would have been beat. I think there are bigger pulls at 198.

Good luck at your meet. Maybe ill see you at RUM.

actually the highest ranked deadlift at 198 is 700. Which is crazy impressive itself LOL. I saw yesterday Scott Reid pulled 700 in 220 so you are still numero uno. I'm hoping to break 700 next meet; that would be unreal for me

Jeremy Hamilton
11-01-2009, 01:27 PM
oh, I must be thinking of the geared DLs of this year.

Ya I see Reid beat my total by a good 50lbs though. Would like to compete with him at RUM.

In the USAPAL @ 198...Craig Terry has pulled 705 raw. Plus he's a full meet guy. I saw him pull it last year at RAW national against me! Hell of a puller & squater.

He'll be doing the deadlift competition i am sure at Arnold this year.
