View Full Version : Observation in the bench press

I noticed, that real good raw bench pressers then to spay their elbows really wide with suited benchers tucking their elbows really close to their bodies. Are these two different techniques, or one in the same??? I never benched suited, but noticed a drastic difference with raw benching such that the spayed elbows enabled me to do more weight.

There are a few reasons for this difference.
1. Good raw benchers tend to be stronger in the chest / shoulders than the lats / triceps, therefore they lift more with the higher groove.
2. In the bench shirt it's easier to touch as you lower toward your abs as opposed to you chest.
3. Another reason is that good raw benchers tend to have a short upper arm (humerus bone), which makes tucking and touching lower much more difficult / unnatural.
