just competed in my first meet today and it was a blast! Buddy did a great job hosting the meet, super nice and very helpful. Also thanks to Mike and Bev, they did a great job judging today and they too were of great help for a first timer. The guys from North Georgia Barbell, all class acts. ANy of them were ready and willing to help at any time. I am totally HOOKED! I totaled 1267, which was not bad i guess. Unfortunately I left a lot weight out there on the squat and DL. I guess i can bame that on being a newbie and didnt wanna bomb. This has also motivated me to find a gym where I can train with other powerlifters. A lot of guys were coming up to me and saying, "you have a lot more in you", having training partners im sure would help push me to my limits. I train alone and need the added push. So if any of you know anyone in the Birmingham area, please let me know. Once again, Buddy, Mike, Bev and North GA Barbell, thanks for your help!!
Bench 297.5
Squat 462
DL 507

Good Job man!!!

Congrats on your first meet. You're 100% right about finding a crew to train with. Just having quality spotters lets you push yourself more. Mix in training with guys stronger than you, and it really pushes you.

Good Job!...

You are in sort of a weird area in Alabama in terms of powerlifters--although the entire state is kind of frustrating because we are so spread out. Buddy and his group is up by Gadsden/Rainbow City, Bama Barbell is still lifting in Tuscaloosa, and we are down in the Auburn/Montgomery area. (there is also a group up towards Huntsville). There are a few isolated powerlifters up your way too. If you don't want to vor can't make the drive, get in touch with me and I'll see if I can help you find someone to train with.

Thanks JK1
Is ICON Performance in Birmingham any good? You can send mea private message to answer these questions too. Let me know who you know around here and lets see if we can work something out. Once again, thanks for the help

I'm sorry, I don't know much about ICON Performance. Thats Jeff Green's business correct? I have always thought that what he did was more athelete--ie sports performance and Olympic lifting, not powerlifting--but I'll also be the first to say I might be wrong with thinking that.

yes, that is jeff greens place. who can i contact up this way that you might know?

Awesome, Now you can call your self a powerlifter! Congrats

Hows the body feel? I remember my first full meet. I felt like a truck hit me.

All those people that said you had more in you... they were right!
I'm glad you're hooked. :) You were great to have on the platform. Congratulations again. Gotta agree with you on NGBB too, that's a fine group to have at any meet. If anything needs doing on the platform they immediately jump in and help.

My body is trashed! Ive lifted heavier weights in all 3 lifts than what i put up saturday, but havent done all 3 lifts like that in one day. Feel beat down. but it is a gratifying feeling to say the least.

thanks for the support, you guys were great. and as i said, i cant wait for my next week. that in itself should push me to train harder. i somewhat limped into this meet, will definately prepare better next time.

You did great Coach! You absolutely had more in you! Monster Barbell is about an hour or less up I-59 from the airport area of B-ham. We bench on Mondays, squat on Wednesdays, and deadlift an DL related assistance work on Friday. We are finally set up and good to go. We have now got the 'monolift' head for our power-rack (the one that was in the warmup area at the meet). We're very happy with how well it works. If you want to drive up and train with us (even if only occasionally) you're more than welcome! Again, you did great and I'm glad it was a good experience for you. That's the kind of feedback that makes putting on meets worth it! Let me know if you need directions to the gym. By the way; there are no gym dues at Monster. Just bring your passion for the sport and come on up!

Great to hear about your first meet. I've got my first meet this weekend and am getting really anxious.

you will have agreat time. im 36 and havent been able to compete at much other than out-drinking my buddies since college ball. i have found that this is something that has really motivated me. i didnt really ready myself for this meet. I bascially said what the heck and did it. but it was really a blast. made me feel like a "younger guy" again. be smart with your openers, but after that shoot the moon. i underestimated how much adrenaline factored into things. good luck, I KNOW you will have a great time.
